    Landsdown exit poll

    FF 24 -8
    FG 34 + 6.5
    Lab 17 + 5.5
    Green 3 -1
    SF 9 + 1
    Ind 13

Early trends appear to be FG up everywhere, FF holding up in the sticks not the towns.

According to RTÉ radio, George Lee looks to be elected on the first count in Dublin South and Maureen O'Sullivan (Tony Gregory's heir) looks very likely to take the seat in Dublin Central. Maurice Ahern of FF is trailing in 5th place there.

Eoin Ryan doing better than pre-election polls but still a huge battle on with transfers going to decide whether Mary Lou or Joe Higgins will be able to steal ahead of Ryan

Joe Higgins (SP), you mean? Jim Higgins is a FG Euro candidate in the North-West constituency.

The Greens seem to be in a very bad way. From what RTE are reporting up to a dozen of their councillors could be in trouble. They are having difficulties in Dublin. Only Mark Deary in Dundalk seems safe.

Up to 10 former Progressive Democrats appear highly likely to take seats. These include Barry Saul, Mogie Maher, Tom Welby, Bridget Teefey, Rose Brennan, Mary Mitchell O Conner, Declan McDonnell, Terry O Flaherty, Serina Campbell, and Jim Cuddy. Former PD TD Mae Sexton is in, while Victor Boyhan is also fighting for a seat in Blackrock, and the fact that he is the only Independent on the ticket may well work to his advantage. Equally Brendan Gilmore, and Peter Merrigan are on course to take Town Council seats. Not a bad days work for my old party's candidates.

Effectivelty that would leave the party with about 4 Cllrs

I doubt it but I am guessing that RTE will provide the best of the coverage such as it is. This page http://www.rte.ie/news/elections/local/ will allow you to select a constituency as well as candidates. Results are expected to start coming in late afternoon.

At least two in Howth/Malahide have gone, chap in Ennis probably will, a guy who moved into Crumlin is unlikely and they also mentioned a possible Carlow loss and problems with the other Dublin constituencies.

Given the claims of strong party democracy from the greens and losing so many councillors because of the actions of the TDs, I have a feeling the trouble will come from within the core of the party. It won't be long before Gormley has a serious problem on his hands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

He won't necessarily get in on those numbers. Galway was always going to be big. He needs a lot of first preferences because he probably won't get many transfers.

Hope you are right. If Ganley gets in, it is a poor reflection on the nw region.

Its starting to look like Pat Gallagher/Declan Ganley ding-dong for the last seat

this is appearing highly likely, one way or the other. The party faithful were very quiet in the run up to the elections for fear of rocking the boat, but I'd imagine once the dust settles a bit, that will change. A defeat of that magnitude for the Greens seems a little out there, but if that happened, I'd say they'd br gone by the end of the week.

and appears they may lose one in Kildare

FF may lose 4-5 seats on Louth County Council down from 9, Greens may gain 1, possibly 2 but may lose one in Monaghan.

FF seats may be halved in Dublin. Greens may lose 7 councillors in County Area - a wipeout!

there appears to be a lot of independants doing well. i'm not sure what the reasons would be for this, other than maybe a tiredness from voters of the usual faces and parties

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,228 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

independents are doing well because a lot of people cant bring themselves to vote for any party, as they are all useless...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Independents tend to do well in locals as they can make a stand on very specific issues. Some of those Independents are also former PD councillors.
