Right, I said on the Kitchen Sync that if we got this forum that I'd be willing to have all you techno degenerates out to mine for a few beers, biscuits and a sort of 'A track in a day' thing.
Basically I reckon this would be a good laugh:

I'll do a track start to finish on a Saturday (or Sunday), while everyone sits round drinkin, making suggestions, asking questions etc.

Sean has sat in with me before so he can probably tell ya if it'd be any use to ya.

Think I've got everything we need here (can move the setup to the living room for more space). If anyone would like to bring one of those projectors that'd be great.

T'would be an early start (we're talking a 9am job here), and I'm out in Maynooth (1 train journey from Connolly).
    Thoughts?

JT... I'd be very interested to see how techno tracks are put together. Even though our music is not really dance oriented (it's more standard pop/rock bass, drums, guitar), I'd def sign up for that if the dates suit. It's all music at the end of the day.

... and since you're in Maynooth, then we're practically neighbours anyway

If your blessed with a Mac, can you record your talking through a headset and video of the screen? - i'd be able to host large files on a decent server (and even encode the file down if needed)

Just thought i'd ask as a lot of people won't be able to attend :)

I think Saturday is the only feasible day. I can't go during the week for obvious reasons and I ain't getting up that early on a Sunday!!

    ooh i had an idea.

i'll give out the stems/tracks on dvd/usb sticks afterwards so people can bring them home, shove them into whatever sequencer they're using (cubase, ableton, logic, pro tools, whatever) and do their own mixes.

one of the main downfalls of people new to production is their mixing, and there's no point in working tirelessly on your first masterpiece to inevitably not do it justice when it comes to the final mixing. This way you'll have a bit of experience etc.

    yeah/no?

Hell yeah! Great idea...will be interesting to see how everyone will remix your track-in-a-day :-)

i'd love to attend if possible. I don't use Logic yet so even seeing the techniques involved would be a benefit. I'd vote for a Sunday, as I'm sure none of us heathens are going to mass.

Even though I know sod all about production I'd love to come along and observe - I've always been interested in the mechanics and would be interested to watch you guys work.

Also would be great to put a few faces to usernames after all this time!

What I think would be a bit of a laugh would be to have a 'popcorn' competition - everyone doing their own version.

You know, POPCORN - "doo doo doo do de da doo..."

So you end up with a ton of different versions, like the 79 here
    http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/03/79_versions_of_.html

but NOT like the one here - check out 0:59, sounds like a tone deaf monkey trying to play Da Hool's 'Meet her at the love parade'

I've got the original (or just really old..) version on Vinyl.

Its very scuzzy & party worn at this stage. Pure filthy!

Popcorn by Hot Butter, or something I think it is. Great tune.

If I can I'd love to make it out. I've got enough gear now to get me started, and have done some messing around, but tbh I'm pretty much lost.

Its a bit of a trek out though. In any case, if I do manage to make it I could bring the handicam and a portable tripod. Its only gonna be DV res, but that'd be decent for the purpose. Only have a handfull of tapes though, would need more for a whole day, and load of up time.

I don't post much but I'd love to come along if nobody has any objections. This would really help me in my own production, which has somewhat stagnated in the beginner's phase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,220 ✭✭✭jiltloop

I'd also be interested in this, hopefully it won't clash with work. Plus it would be handy for me as I live in Maynooth myself.

I can give lifts from the train station in maynooth if anyone's coming that way.

I would defo be interested in this. I will have to leave it late to confirm unfortunately. Fair play Jtsuited. You're a legend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jtsuited

cool so we have enough people for next sunday. Consider it the official date.

I'm thinking set up in the kitchen/living room area, where I can fit about 8 people comfortably (probably more). I'm gonna try and keep to the fundamentals doing a track, so I'm only gonna use stuff people have, like logic's built in plugins (which are similar to most daw's default plugins), and a few ableton things (depending on what the most common setup for people there is).

For synthesis stuff, I'm going to actually use the Moog Modular as well, as I think that learning synthesis using modular stuff is actually the easiest way to get your head round it. Consider it the most basic synthesis primer ever made.

You might be thinking it's a bit odd that I take this time to teach all this stuff, but I really get a buzz out of sharing knowledge about this type of stuff with people who are passionate about music.

Hopefully I'm decent enough at teaching it, there are a few people here I've taught stuff to so they could probably comment further as to whether I am or not.

    Ok, a few catches:

    1. I'm not a very scientific guy. Well not when I'm making music, so be prepared for a good bit of fiddling around and very unscientific talk like 'yeah i'm feeling that now'.
It it sounds right, it is right.

    2. I work fast. So take your eyes and ears off what's going on and you're likely to wonder wtf happened.

    3. Taking things too seriously will not be tolerated.

    4. Meticulous note-taking is seriously frowned upon. In fact I'd rather people didn't take notes at all. But some people find it makes them pay attention better, so whatever works fo ya.

    5. I will give everyone who's coming some preparatory notes and links etc., just so they're not completely lost if they're total n00bs.

    6. I am planning on giving one-to-one tutorials in the coming months, and only decided to do this lately so this is not a sort of 'introductory seminar - now sign up for next 6 months and get a free hat' type thing'.

If ya feel you'd like to do some lessons with me in the future, that's cool, and I'm still in the process of deciding what rates to charge (believe me it'll be the cheapest around by a long-shot).

    7. Don't wreck the place.

    8. PLEASE try and be on time on the day. I can't emphasise this enough. It most likely is gonna be a 9 or 10 am start so don't go on a mad one the night before.
It's gonna be a long day (most likely 9-9), but you'll learn loads.

    9. Post in this thread if you are DEFINITELY coming.

    10. Pm me if you have any questions. Everyone is welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,607 ✭✭✭VinylJunkie

    I'm a definite, although I don't think I could go 9-9 without taking notes. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭splitrmx

    What's for dinner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 193 ✭✭Bobon

Jtsuited - I'm gonna have to pull out. This poxy HDip i'm doing is demanding too much time from me. I would definitely be interested in the near future as I have every intention of getting a mac and acquiring the holy grail that is Logic. Would be great to have a sit-down with you then. :)
