i am hosting an olympic lifting seminar this saturday from 12-2pm in sandyford (5mins from luas) in www.bhaf.ie

It will be given by none other than Gem (Gill) and she will cover the following

12-12.45pm - warmups and set up of lifts, stretches to improve lifts, basic technique, cleans and some accessory lifts.

12.45-1.15pm - nutrition lecture and Q & A, a short lecture on the break to cover all aspects of nutrition for sports, supplemtents and optimal fat loss

    1.15pm -2pm - snatch, more accessory lifts and final Q & A

This is a practical workshop so if your coming please bring food, workout clothes and there are showers available. You are more than welcome to do a full workout before or after to try out the gym also.

Its just 20 euro for the day (most of the people signed up so far are all my own clients).

Please send me a message asap your coming as the limit is 10 people as i want to keep it very hands on for those looking to incorporate these vital power lifts into training and get their technique sorted.

Do not sign up unless you are 100% certain you can be there.

Bit late notice for me to get time off for this Dominic but I'll let my peops know about it. Always good to see trainers bring in other coaches to help out their athletes.

no worries and sorry for the late notice as i already have it almost full with my own clients so thought i would put it out for others also.

No experience is required and i will post up some photos etc when its done

Could be really interested in this as might be coming over to Dublin this weekend. What is the experience/background of the tutor?

    Me :)

This isn't a workshop for the serious Olympic lifter per se, but for someone who'd like to incorporate the basics of the lifts into their routine - a taster of what's involved if you like, and those basics can be used in a regular routine or built on as needed.

I definately want to do this! I've been thinking about incorporating Olympic lifts into my training but I don't really know where to start in terms of the technique. How do I sign up??

Ok cool. What's your background with the lifts? Sounds like a great layout of the day, hope there are plenty of people interested in this.

I'm not quite a veteran lifter but I know my way around an Eleiko bar and I compete regularly, most recently at the Eleiko Womens' International Grand Prix (I've got a couple of years' of competitive powerlifting too which helps). My own coach is the National Coach so I've got a solid foundation and having seen me in action Transform thinks I'm worthy enough to be let loose on his clients!!

Weightlifter was just wondering are you a competing weightlifter or do you just practice alone? The Irish weightlifting community is like a little family. I would have thought you would have come across g'em at some stage??

So true. We bitch and fight with each other all the time :D

I've never come across a more welcoming bunch of people in all seriousness though, and if nothing else I hope this day gets one or two (or more!) people interested in pursuing weightlifting in more depth to enjoy the craic we have every day.

weightlifter I'm sure our paths have crossed at some stage or at the least we know most of the same people! Cathal Byrd, Kevin Darcy & Andy Murphy are up in Dublin this week actually training with us in Hercs and I'll have met/ annoyed most of the competitive lifters at various Provincial and National comps! I train in Hercs under Harry Leech (and sometimes Tommy Hayden when I get in there early enough).

As promised, here’s the synopsis of what we did yesterday – thanks to everyone for coming, it was brilliant to meet everyone and see such interest in learning the Olympic lifts, and many thanks to Transform for organising it – hopefully it’s the first of more such workshops!!

Squat stance: a deep squat stance is really important, so work on flexibility…

    Deep_squat_position_3.jpg
    • Back and knees are perpendicular to the floor – this keeps you upright and allows you to comfortable position the bar on your shoulders. Note: Olympic lifting shoes play a large part in maintaining stability in this position, regular trainers with squishy heels aren’t ideal
    • Feet are approximately shoulder width apart or a little wider with toes pointed slightly outward
    • Chest out, shoulders back, arched back
    • If you need assistance getting depth, use a bar or rack to hold on to allow you to get your bum down without losing balance. There’s also a range of exercises that you can use to help you out.

    Power Clean:

    Starting Position
    • Hook grip (thumb under fingers)
    • Elbows rotated so they point forward
    • Shoulders over the bar
    • Feet under the bar so that it lies over where the toes meet the foot
    • Push your feet into the ground and keep the bar close to you as pull.

    Overhead Squat
    • Wide grip
    • Keep head slightly forward and feet flat on the floor (if the heels elevate it indicates inflexible hamstrings)

    Hang Power Snatch
    181snatch.gif
We did this from the Hang i.e. from picture 2 onwards
    • As before rotate the elbows, keep the shoulders over the bar but this time the grip is wider to allow you to get underneath the bar.
    • Your arms are spaghetti, they don’t pull the bar, they just keep it connected to your body.
    • Drive from the hips
    • Finish in the overhead squat

This is obviously a very annotated version of what we did but hopefully the workshop gave you an idea of what the lifts involved and it's whetted your appetite to know more!!

Yeah thanks to Transform and g'em, tis always good to learn new things even when you do feel like a bit of a tit putting it into practise:D I'm definitely up for another workshop.

thanks for that g'em. are there any web resources or literature on the oly lifts that you'd recommend for beginners.

    Super shot!!

Glad everyone enjoyed it and got lots from the workshop.

I will be running another one again within the next month if there is the same interest and can also run one on teaching proper form on the basic lifts (squat, deadlift, bench, presses etc) as a intro and development of ones training with program design also covered.

Thanks again to gem for coming along and for the review above.

I had to sign up to boards.ie after hearing all the talk about it on saturday and to check out the pictures.;)

Thanks to Dominic and Gill, was great day and hopefully there will be a few more seminars in the near future.

There is two on in Ireland on the same weekend? Which one is this?

It was a level 1 coaching course which is basically introduction to coaching. I have to say it was really well presented and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole weekend.

By the looks of the photos it was a good course and everyone got the hang of it (pun shamelessly intended )

Seriously though good form, I didnt realise all that went into them and the prerequisites to lifting. Everyone attempting them should make sure they get good coaching be it from a coach or a very good lifter.

of all the photos to put up... it had to be the unflattering squat one :o:D

Short answer: no. Olympic lifting really is one of those things that you can't self-teach, and you definitely can't teach over the intarweb. If you decide to keep lifting my advice would be to do so alongside someone who knows what they're doing (either a coach or a good lifter as joepenguin says) who can troubleshoot the lift as you go.

Weightlifting is very, very safe when it's done right so make sure it's done right from the start :)

Thanks to Gill and Dominic for running this on Saturday. I personally enjoyed it and got a lot out of. As someone who had never even attempted these lifts before, I must admit I found it quite challenging, which is always a good thing for keeping the motivation up. I'll definately start practicing these lifts and will be up for going to the next one. I would highly recommend this type of workshop for anyone looking to learn these lifts. Also, it was great to put faces to a few of the usernames from this forum.

Let me dig out a few other ones then Gem if you think that looks unflattering!!

    Its a super shot!

Ah no you're grand - I'm highly amused at the various faces I seem to make when I talk though :D
