I'm looking to get lose weight & get fit(I'm changing my diet as well as joining a gym ).

    Westwood is my nearest gym;

1.I was just wondering what other people think of it?

2.what way does the membership work? is it direct debit or pay one lump sum..

3.Are there any other gyms in the area that people recommend?

    thanks in advance for replies..

Iv been a member for nearly a year-and i absolutly love it.
I've found the staff to be really helpful and extremely friendly in and out of the gym. Iv gone out on a night out with a few of them on a couple of occasions and they are great! I'd go nearly 4 days a week, and maybe once a month do I go up and find that the place is packed. So i just adjust my routine accordingly,it usually frees up pretty quick.
Membership wise-you pay an initial fee (never pay more that 99e-regardless of what they say!!!) Then its 55e for student and 70e (i think) for normal members. They do a direct debit and a full payment option-with the latter possibly being a little cheaper.
The facilitys are great-with the steam room, jacuzzi, and sauna all being great to relax in after workouts. Plus the free use of squash/tennis courts and other classes really is handy! Iv taken up squash because I could!
The gym opens later than most other gyms i visited-kick us out at 10.30pm mon to fri. I went to Jackie Skellys in Nutgrove, and found it small-cramped and overly expensive for what was basically a load of rowing, cross trainers etc.
As im a member of WW, if you want-I can put your name down to get a 4 day free pass. Atleast then you can try it out. They usually do 'refer a friend deals' but I dont know of any at the moment. The free pass doesnt count or affect the refer a friend, so I in no way get anything out of it (just pointing this out incase anyone thinks otherwise!)
For me, being a newly turned 23 year old-I've found that the closer I am to a gym, the more I'll use it. So a 5 min car drive or 20 min cycle is ideal!!

still think its very very over priced even if its nice.

Standard of trainers is quite poor also

Im a year past my student days.

so its €99 up front then €70 a month?

    99 + (70 X 12) = €939

That seems very steep! they'd want to be open 24/7 for that price..

I just got a free 5 consecutive day pass for any westwood gym for 2 people (1 & guest I think the guest must always go with the person).

I got some around xmas too and never used them. I see I still have the old passes for WW sandyford, it also has a sales & marketing girls name & number who sent me them.

You could ring them and see if they will give you the same thing, they are just calling into businesses and handing them out in sandyford so should do. I could pm the girls name & number if they have none.

What I found amusing is this time and last time they are bragging about the value. i.e. it says "5-day VIP membership for 2 people worth €200." just highlighting how expensive they are!

I find that if you go to westwood between 5 ad 9 any day you are guaranteed it will be pretty busy. (although everywhere is the same)

It is in fact €75 per month which in the current market is pretty bad.

Also there are quite a lot of kids swimming classes on, so if you are considering joining for the pool remember that it is going to be like a kids playground sometimes

    Yeh i thought that too.

I also found the weights area very cramped the last time i was there, but it may have changed since.

other gyms include total fitness, and body health and fitness

When u join one Westwood you have access to them all, (sandymount and clontarf) The sandymount one has a no child policy so there's no swimming classes.

I've found the staff to be really helpful and extremely friendly in and out of the gym. .... I'd go nearly 4 days a week, and maybe once a month do I go up and find that the place is packed.

    do you work for ww?!?!?

the staff are very friendly but not very knowledgeable,(if they are they don't show it) i've only seen a couple of times when one of the staff has gone out of their way to correct someones form

you must go during the day i.e. 9 - 5, cause after 6 if the weather isn't good (i.e. 99% of the time) there'll be lots of people in the free weights area, crunching room (don't know the real name) and in the machine weights area until maybe 9ish

    to the o.p.
don't go in there without prices from other gyms, look for the best price in total fitness (in the mountains), crunch in dun loaghaire, maybe even crunch in ucd just to have an idea, then go in and tell them that you'll pay a big lump sum (one or two installments) I was told by a few friends yesterday that they want your money so if you offer it up front but request a knock down price you might get a good deal

they are currently expanding i think so it'll get better

pool is small for the size of the gym

it is over priced but if its close, as chicken_food says, there isn't really an excuse not to go

I've been a member of westwood for almost 4 years, clontarf first and then leopardstown for the last 3 years. I would probably move to another gym if I could get a good recommendation as the fee is ridiculous given a number of factors:

    - Over-crowding
    - Pool is always packed with kids
    - When the races are on you have to park away from the gym and get a bus to the door
    - Trainers are rude

I cant really complain as I said I should move but the hassle of doing it all is whats stopping me (and its probably no hassle)

    On the positive side:

    - spin classes are good
    - gym has expanded, especially the free weights area
    - and its dead at the weekends!

i have to rejoin again soon and its really only for the tennis i would rejoin otherwise i do all my training at www.bhaf.ie - showers are rubbish but if thats not an issue it has everything you really need (equipment, staff, training) and is not too busy and its 250 euro per year

i checked out the site but it has no pics of the inside (unless i'm blind)

whats the size of the gym like? does it get packed at all? i've only really spent my time in ww leopardstown, what is the equipment like in bhaf compared to ww? is it full of normies like me or hooge people?

Is this definitely true? Would be great to have the option to switch between Sandyford and Sandymount...

I'm thinking of joining Westwood because it's pretty much the only place that has squash courts, a pool and a gym. It is expensive though and the joining fee is a pain. I'm being charged a student joining fee of e75 - reckon I could haggle them down further???

Sorry to hijack the thread for a moment. I'm starting a new job in Cherrywood Business Park (Loughlinstown) in two weeks and will be looking for a nearby gym for working out at lunch. Any recommendations? WW looks too far away - I don't want to waste any time getting to and from the gym, cos I only have the lunch hour!
    Thanks.
