SFIV XGC meet on June 13th - anyone up for that?

Hey lads. As the title suggests, would any of you lads be up for an SFIV meet at XGC Saturday week? (June 13th)

Just a little suggestion for those bringing their own copies, don't put any stickers on the discs as the heat and disc spinning in the drive could fall off and cause major problems in the drive so I suggest that everyone should remember where they put their disc (which console)

Sat week's good for me. I have Nocturnal forum beers this Friday (yer all welcome) so I may not be too human come Saturday.

Well, its not this Saturday :) the one after.

    Cheers kokiki! :)

I'll try and make this. I need some human opposition since I got my fight stick and my wireless router decided it didn't want to connect to the internet anymore.

Sure thing, can bring a 360 copy and a stick.

Just wondering though, do you guys want to make it into a tournament or we just play a bunch of games? Personally, I'd prefer just playing a bunch of games because then we're just there for a bit of fun and removing any nervousness and seriousness but we can take votes on it.

I would say there's not much point in deciding rules and making it all serious etc before we've even established if we can stand to be in each others presence. :)

Well, most of us would have played with each other or at least been at the same tournament before. :pac: I vote against a tourney though, I'd prefer to just get some casual games in.

Yeah but you don't matter, I'm the only important one here*.

... Yeah, sounds good. I could bring a PS3 copy and stick.

    *May not be serious

I can bring a copy of the game, fightpad and fightstick if I go for 360.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

Yeah I might actually be up for this, if it's just casual. Pending whether my stick arrives by then, I could bring 3 replica saturn pads and a copy of SFIV (PS3).

Never been to the XGC, question for someone who has, have all the characters been unlocked on the machines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,985 ✭✭✭animaX

Great, I'll be up for this! And I vote for casuals. I can bring my copy of third strike for xbox too

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,400 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I can bring third strike as well if you's want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 886 ✭✭✭randomchild

I'd be up for this, hopefully I can learn to play on a stick by then. If not I can always use my fightpad.

Some unlocked on some machines, none unlocked on other machines.

As for bringing copies of 3S, I brought one last time and some (all?) of the machiens don't have HDs, meaning no backwards compatibility, meaning no Anniversary Collection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

Well, at the second tournament, animaX brought a copy of AC and 3S worked fine. There was a HDD so not sure why there wasn't one last time.

Right, lets keep it casual then. I think we should try to bring as many copies as possible as more copies = more xboxs/ps3s can be used and if anyone has memory units with complete save games (everyone unlocked) if you could bring them too. I'll bring down my copy of SFIV (X360) and memory unit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

About putting stickers on the discs lads, better not as they could fall off in the drive from the heat of the laser and spinning so could cause a problem if it falls off in the drive. Just remember which console you put it in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

By the way, could anyone tell me how much it is to rent a console per hour?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,103 ✭✭✭CodeMonkey

    http://www.xtremeigc.com/Rates.html

It's 2.50 an hour for xbox so prob the same for ps3. Discounts for members and someone might want to call XGC and work out a discount. Prob wanna work out how to split the bill and some system of gathering money from everyone cause I am guessing not everyone will stay there for the same amount of time. Might come out myself and I can bring a stick and copy of sf4 for ps3.

Poor old Vega....he's due for major buffage in 2nd Down.

I'm might be up for this, providing I'm not heading out that weekend in the country.

    prices times etc....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

I havent been to one of these yet. Definately going. The banter in person is always better than online. Plus, you get to publicly shame people when they get flowcharted. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

Yeah, I'll contact XGC tomorrow about it. Would be nice to get a discount :). In regards to splitting the cost, I think we need to say how long each of us plans to stay so that we can better manage the costs. So if say a bunch of people plan on staying for 2 hours, then the total cost of all the consoles used should be split into 2 hours (e.g.: 5 consoles, €25 (€5 each as €2.50 per hour x2) / split by 12 players = €2.08 per person (round it down to €2)

I think we'd be set with that system. Actually, this would work out cheaper than the tournament!

For this to work properly though, can everyone just say how long they plan to stay? I myself am easy about it. My max would be 6:15 o'clock though because I'd like to catch the 6:45 bus back or if it finishes earlier than that, 4:45 bus.

So, personally my range could either be 3,4 or 5 hours.

Like the tournaments, I think we could all meet up at 1.

And finally, no, I'm not a mathematician, I'm just very technically minded :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,229 ✭✭✭Dreddybajs

Depending on how many people show up I'll stay for longer - probably 2 hours at least from 1ish onwards though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

Actually, something which occurred to me. Should we make it so that there are an even number of console for an even number of players (i.e.: 6 consoles for 12 players) or just rent out a few regardless of number of players?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

Actually, I'll contact XGC next week so that by then, I'd be able to give a better estimate as to how many people are going so that I don't say tomorrow 8 people are coming and then by next week, it turns to 20 then it'll be a mess to book more consoles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,229 ✭✭✭Dreddybajs

I doubt we'll need to pre-book consoles or anything anyway man it's usually not that full.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

I suppose yeah. I mean if only 3 or 4 xboxs, I think we'd be alright and ps3s don't seem as popular so there is bound to be a few there too. I'll call them to let them know we're coming down anyway rather than a mob coming down out of nowhere :D

I am a mathematician, and I say your calculations are correct sir!

I have a disk which contains the back compatibility update for xbox360's so it shouldn't be a problem to play third strike.

Excellent! :D honestly, I'm going more for 3S than IV :P. Too many bugs in IV in comparison to the otherwise perfect 3S.

I've been playing a lot of IV lately and then went back to play a bit of third strike and I couldn't pull off any supers!! The timing is so much more strict. It's way to easy to pull off moves in IV, it makes you play lazy. Aparently, they have designed it so that you can pull off a dragon punch just by pressing down-forward, down-forward punch!!!

In 3S you can perform dragon punch motions using df,d,df. So using df,df is not that much different. In SFIV I use df,d,df over df,df as I find it easier.

Yeah, I guess thats what Yoshinoro meant when he said "a game that suits the casual and hardcore gamers" I think the hardcore bit is meant to be for the focus cancelling as you have to be razor sharp to time the focus cancel (i.e.: focus cancelling on the second hit of Ken's shoryuken) but really, even when you get the hang of the focus cancelling, it isn't even hard. 3S is definitely harder for the super cancelling. I found though, the difficulty varies from move to move.

Its easier to super cancel a shoryuken than a hadouken so it takes a bit of practice to super cancel off the hadouken.

regarding balance though.....surely SF4 has the edge? I mean, i'm no third strike player, but isnt there only three characters in the roster that are playable in tourneys without just falling over dead?

SF4 has ryu, sagat, balrog, dhalsim, Viper, Zangief, Bison, Rufus, Akuma who are all big tourney winning characters.....and I'm sure I left a few out.

Supposed I'm biased coz I was never a part of the sf3 scene but this one seems far more competitive. Besides, they will patch bugs....there already did it with that Fei long infinite thing.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,400 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I don't like the way SF3 has no long range game. Also I suck at it and can't parry.

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

3rd Strike and Super Turbo are probably better games than SF IV, but it took them several years and versions to get to the standard they are at now and even at that both are far from perfect games.

SF IV is abit too turtle friendly. Run away is easy with the wider arenas and the game speed is a little slow.

The concept of revenge guage is abit off. I mean rewarding a person for losing is abit silly. Encourages the person who is winning to turtle even more.

Having said that it probably has the best balance of any SF game so far. Super Turbo wasn't bad but 3rd Strike was laughable in that regard. Perhaps a 3rd Strike HD Remix might one day improve that.

In Street Figthers 4 defense its probably the best first version of any Street Fighter series which leaves me with high hopes that later versions will be improved gameplay and balance wise.

Also one thing the pro's like about Street Fighter 4 is it has an active scene and did a huge amount to restore a faltering genre. There is far more people playing SF IV than there is ST or 3rd Strike currently.

I'm just waiting for the King of Iron Fist tournament to come rolling back into town.
That game will be the end of me.

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

Bah!....that game lacks pycho power therefore is absolutly useless too me.....useless!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

Well, I myself wouldn't really fall under the 3S scene as I only played it since I only got anniversary collection in 05 or 06. I understand how certain characters would mainly be used for tourneys but that doesn't mean everyone else is useless. Sure, IV is the same. Best ansatsuken fighter is Ryu so most top level ansatsuken players use Ryu. 3S was the same but with Ken.

But in both games, if you're not necessarily a top level player, other ansatsuken fighters are realistic choices. I mean, even after playing IV for a while and then trying 3S, I switched to Ryu when before I'd always use Ken but now I fight better with Ryu than Ken in 3S.

I know I'm not a top level player. I try to improve my play as I'm quite a competitive guy but thats about it. I myself am not bothered that I'm not even in the top 500 but I just enjoy it for what it is, a game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,229 ✭✭✭Dreddybajs

Ken, Chun, Yun are the absolute top tier choices in 3S - this isn't so for IV is what people are saying, there are plenty of other viable characters in terms of matchups etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

Ken, Yun and chun li are really much, much better then everyone else.

Its so much closer in sf4. Yes, ryu is very good, but he isnt loads better than the list I gave you earlier. Obviously, the player skill matters the most. But all the best players in third strike picked those three......when you look at the top 20 or so players that have had good showings since sf4 came out, the cast of chars they use is much more varied. Hell, ive seen a couple people beast with chars like el feurte....in proper tournements. The videos are out there.

EDIT : beat me to it mate :D

Fuerte's pretty decent, the only thing is that his whole gameplan is built around his RSF loop. :pac:
