Anybody else gonna be watching it?

    On at 5 Irish time.

Strong rumours of at least 1 new Mario or Zelda. Miyamoto to personally make an announcement so its bound to be relatively big. With Microsoft's new motion controlled camera announced yesterday, im sure Nintendo will come up with something to counteract it, not that theres much that needs to be counteracted.

Trailer of Red Steel 2 looks outstanding and also will come bundled with MotionPlus.

Fingers crossed for a new Zelda.

Or he could reveal Pikmin 3...

I'm hoping for a new Zelda too, one built ground-up for the Wii, as TP, as good as it was, was merely a port of a GC game...

Don't forget that TP was also meant to be the last LoZ game "as we know it"...

I hope it's a return to the old Nintendo's of E3 with stupid american journalists hollering with the announcement of every new sequel. Haven't been excited by an nintendo conference in too long.

    Ripped from IGNs live blog:
8:18 a.m.: Bozon here. Matt is off running around, Craig just went on a coffee run, and I'm playing Nintendo trivia while sitting front row in the oh-so-special VIP viewing area. We can't go into details since it's so secret, but to say they have four new Zelda games (all on CDi, all releasing in the next 24 hours) would be a HUGE understatement. Also, it's raining money, the beer is flowing like wine (?) and Nintendo is handing out flying cars. Still... as a Nintendo fan, I got all this and am still pissed. This keynote does NOT deliver. Lame.

I can't watch it cuz I'm at work, but one on n-europe.com:
    http://www.n-europe.com/special.php?sid=e32009stream

Eurogamer and IGN have live blogs too:
    http://wii.ign.com/articles/988/988415p1.html
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/e3-nintendo-e3-conference-live-report

The Eurogamer one updates without having to refresh the page, which is nice. :D
The IGN one has better humour though ;)

    IGN again:
9:01 a.m.: 50 million-plus households own a Wii worldwide. The Koopaling best known for wearing sunglasses is Roy. As of last week, 86 WiiWare games have been released. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh yeah. Here we go. Nintendo logo is on the screen. I think that's mean to mean that the megaton is coming shortly.

    Eurogamer:
17:03:01 -We're quite high up in the auditorium. On the stage are a load of screens of various sizes, all displaying the Nintendo logo. We've yet to see anyone in a Mario costume but there's always hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

    Eurogamer:
17:04:57 - And it's started! Poppy music and a montage of - YES - old people playing videogames! And some kids, and some women. And some more old people! Mario and Luigi are on the screen now, but then then it's back to the old people and the women. There's a lot of white.

    IGN:
9:03 a.m.: My wireless strength is asstacular. Hopefully Nintendo's ninjas are trying to block out the signal. Could be. This thing better start soon. Apple makes some nice computers, but batteries... not so much! Oh -- here we go! Nintendo logo is on the screen. People playing DS, Wii zapper, etc. "Everyone's game."

9:04 a.m.: Basically, a montage showing how popular Nintendo's systems are. Lots of happy families in front of televisions. Some dude doing push-ups. Girl using her DSi to take photos. You know the drill. Everyone is so ridiculously happy to be playing Nintendo systems that we might just have to sedate them.

9:05 a.m.: Montage over. EVP of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunaway, takes the stage. No snowboarding that I can see.

9:06 a.m.: She's talking about videogame data. This is not shocking. Last year, videogames were just as big as home video and toys. And even bigger than movie and music box office put together.

I'll just keep updating this one post instead of flooding the topic with replies

9:07 a.m.: Nintendo is going to bring us surprise today, she says. Sweeeet! I want surprises. I want them. Show me surprise, Cammie.

Sweet. I have a view of the teleprompter so I can read what Cammie is going to say before she says it.

9:10 a.m.: She intros Mario -- the character. She's going to unveil a new game. For the last 15 years, Miyamoto has been thinking about a new way to play a Mario game that's never been possible before. Unveils New Super Mario Bros. for Wii.

New Super Mario Bros for Wii is all about multiplayer, it seems. Four people take the stage to play. Classic 2D view a la New Super Mario Bros. for DS. Except four people are playing. Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad. Very much a game about platforming and getting coins and points. You can play it single-player or coop with up to four players. People can jump in and out at random.

9:11 a.m.: Mario has an awesome propeller suit. Shake the Wii remote and he spins into the air. Very cool. There are portions of scrolling ground -- parts of the ground move like conveyor belts. Mario walked into a wall and it disappeared, revealing hidden secrets. At the end of each level, you get a tally. All the points you collected, all the enemies you stomped, etc. All four players are ranked.

9:13 a.m.: New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be playable at E3 and will launch worldwide this holiday.
Calls the game "Mr. Miyamoto's new masterpiece."

9:15 a.m.: Moving on to the next Wii Fit. Presumably to chat about Wii Fit Plus. "In the 13 months since it launched, Wii Fit has been the best selling software in America and around the world." "We began looking at ways to make Wii Fit easier to apply to your daily life, more beneficial and even more attractive to every member of the household." Wii Fit Plus is the result. It's official.

From the game's main menu, you enter the locker room where you can become your own personal trainer. There are six new strength and yoga training exercises in Wii Fit Plus. You can omit interludes between exercise. You can target a specific body area with specific programs. The game will keep track of the total calories you burn.

9:18 a.m.: Not just about fitness. It's also a lot of fun, says Cammie. 15 new balance games. Juggling, skateboarding and "once called perfect 10 where you need to swing your hips in different directions to choose number combinations that total 10." Also a jumping game a la Mario where you jump over hurdles and dodge objects. You can buy it with the Balance Board or as a standalone purchase this fall.

More gameplay montages with people flailing and giggling uncontrollably. Balance Board, Wii Sports, etc.

9:19 a.m.: Reggie Fils-Aime takes the stage. He scares me. "Wii continues to attack the games market like no system before," he growls. I won't look him in the eye or he'll kill me.

He's talking about how important interface is. Wii remote is the example. Then the nunchuk. And most recently, the Balance Board. Nintendo is now talking about MotionPlus.

9:20 a.m.: "For a couple decades, players only used their fingers to control game action. Today, they're off the couch. In fact, over the last few years physical reality has become the new proving ground for game innovation." Take a look, he says.

Montage. MotionPlus will cool. Ping pong in slow motion. Basketball in slow motion. Swordplay in slow motion. Similar to the videos NCL posted on the Japanese website not long ago.

9:22 a.m.: Gameplay shown. Ping pong. Basketball. Golf. Bow and arrow. Rowing a boat. Dog frisbee. All from Wii Sports Resort.

*switching to Eurogamer, as they seem to be quicker on the updates*

Muted clapping. Definitely no whooping. Bill Trinen's back on stage, he's going to show it how we works. Even though we know. The clapping isn't even polite now.

17:24:30 - "WMP detects the position of your Wii remote." Thanks for that, Bill. "The remote and WMP offer precision and motion." Aha! Now we see a Mii sitting on a plane - this is how you will start Wii Sports Resort, by skydiving.

17:25:48 - With WMP your Wii remote is your Mii in skyydiving. You twist it to control him or her in the air. You can use it to grab other skydivers, dive down or stay flat. Lovely blue skies and white fluffy clouds as a group of five Miis hold hands in mid air. Looking down, we see a lush green island. The Miis are diving in formation now, and then their chutes open. They drift down to the island.

17:27:21 - So that's the intro sequence. Now he's going to show us archery. It's sunset and his Mii is standing on a clifftop. You hold the Wiimote in front of you and the nunchuk behind, like a real bow. "It feels great." Pan left to right with the Wiimote to move the camera, then let fly. There's a wind gauge in the top hand corner so you have to compensate for things like wind and moving targets.

17:28:16 - Trinen's not very good at this. "You get three shots per target." You can arch shots, just like you would with a real bow. "As you can see it's not about learning the controls, it's about doing what comes naturally. Then it's dependent on your own skills, which is precisely the kind of challenge long time gamers strive for."

17:28:25 - Reggie's back on stage though - "I hope you shoot baskets better than you shoot arrows," he says. No one laughs.

17:29:33 - Trinen and Reggie are doing some trash talk, Nintendo-style. No one is still laughing. There's a split-screen showing Bill and Reggie on each side. The banter is actually painful.

17:31:06 - Reggie and Bill are shooting hoops, lifting the remote up just like you would do with a real ball. "Once you find your rhythm you can keep it going," says Bill, "Just like a real three point contest." They're on a court with palm trees in the background. It's nighttime and there's a big moon shining above, along with some nice fireworks. Reggie wins 19 to 17 and Bill crawls off into the wings, SHAMED.

17:32:20 - Wii Sports Resorts is launching in the US on July 26th. Now Reggie is talking about third-party games and WMP, like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, which will be bundled with WMP. As will Grand Slam Tennis and Virtua Tennis 2009. "This means every little mistake you make in the real world... Will be faithfully reflected in the game," he says.

17:33:31 - He's banging on about Red Steel 2 now. "Third-party development is flowing to Nintendo, and that's because last year, in America, more third-party games were sold for Wii than any other platform - and DS came in second."

17:34:05 - Now he's talking about RPGs. "RPGs are mainly about what goes on inside your head - the story, the strategy, the quests and the combat. RPGs allow developers to vary their approach. For Squenix, this means a specific open world adventure built for Wii." It's Final Fantasy Chrystal Bearers trailer.

17:35:15 - Some people with spiky hair are racing round in chariots, skydiving and talking about crystals,. And it's over. "Square is also bringing a classic RPG franchise to DS - an exclusive version of Kingdom Hearts" available on September 29th. More spiky haired people with enormous eyes. There's a bit of rowing and some fighting. Tinkerbell! Hercules! It does look very impressive for a DS game.

17:37:15 - Bowser's on the screen now. "The latest Mario and Luigi RPG game, subtitled Bowser's Inside Story" - Mario and Luigi will be "reduced to micro-size" as they check out Bowser's "internal pipes" Urgh. It's a DS title: we see Bowser munching a mushroom and burping, then sucking up Mario, Luigi and Daisy, Mario and Luigi are shown battering ulcers with giant hammers, jumping on bacteria, dealing with Bowser's heart burn.

17:37:55 - To end we see the DS held vertical and Bowser blowing fire across both screens. The game will be out in Europe and North America this fall.

17:38:52 - "2010 will bring a new dawn with Golden Sun DS." Footage of the game - a character runs around a mountain landscape, jumping over platforms and gazing at the sunset. A big yellow dragon is shown, then a lady riding a white horse. Another lady shoots arrows from the sky. There's a lovely sunset, and it's over. Cammie's back!

17:41:01 - She's talking about how the huge installed base of DS helps developers innovate. To demonstrate this, she's talking about James Patterson. Beginning 18th October, THQ is bringing James Patterson's Women's Murder Club Games of Passion to DS. "Why join a book club when you can join the women's murder club?" I've often thought that myself. Play as Lindsay or Claire or some other woman. "Investigate secret motives!" And play a bejeweled clone, by the looks of things.

Super Mario Bros Wii looks cool and glad to see that 2D hasnt been completely forgotten about, definitely a new way of playing Mario.

Cammie's on talking about WiiFit Plus now. Meh.

The legendary Reggie is on now. This should be good.

Reggie killed him on the 3-pointers. Last ball and all.

Hope they show a demonstration of Red Steel using Motion Plus.

New Mario & Luigi on DS looks good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

17:42:02 - That was amazing. Now she's talking about Cop: The Recruit, a new game from Ubisoft. Expect a "gritty open-world". You play as a New York cop trying to unravel a conspiracy, called Dan Myers. He's an underground street racer. We see him racing around city streets, then shooting baddies in a warehouse. Looks like you'll get to drive speedboats too.

    >> A conspiracy called Dan Myers? ;) <<

    17:43:17 -

Now Cammie's talking about Girls' Mode, as it's known in Japan, or Style Savvy as it will be called in America. You can design your own clothes. Looks like you hold the DS vertically and pick from "more than 10,000 fashions". But can you go crotchless? "Customise your shop. Compete in Runway Contests. Shop in other players' boutiques. Visit a wide world of shops." And buy things. In them.

17:44:47 - Cammie doesn't wait for applause. "DS delivers something for everyone." She's talking about the DSi now, and how it lets developers deliver surprises. Montage time! It's real people talking about how much they like the DSi. "I'm a really on the go person," "With the touch screen you're like in the game" and so on. "The internet is going to be awesome."

17:45:54 - "It's better than being alone and playing by myself," says a girl. There are snickers. Back to Cammie. "As of today, total Nintendo DSi sales in America have surpassed 1 million units. Consumers have purchased 400,000 Lites" since it launched, too.

17:46:21 - "People today don't just consume entertainment, they create it and share it." Just look at pornography, for example.

17:47:04 - The movie maker - Flip Notes Studio - will be available in the US this summer. No word on Europe. Other user-generated content is on the way: Mario vs. Donkey Kong Minis March Again. It will let you design levels from the ground up.

17:48:11 - You'll be able to share them locally or via Wi-Fi Connection. "Obstacles lie between the minis and the goal, but what are these obstacles? Now, that's mostly up to you." The game will be available as a download for DSi from 8th June - yes, Monday. It's not clear if this is worldwide.

Come on Wii zelda! fingers crossed it's at the end.

I haven't seen the footage but I'm guessing that the new mario could be a bit little big planet maybe? Would be class if there was a level editor.

I hope they show some proper games now. Pity they haven't realised Square enix are a total joke now. Get some more Level 5 goodness on the Wii and DS instead.

The 2 MvDK games were great games.
Not too happy its DSiWare only though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Here's your littlebig planet style stuff Retr0, along with the Mario and Donkey Kong:

17:49:26 - WarioWare DIY now. It will let you design games from scratch. You control everything. "We believe this is close to essential game design as any game has ever come." It's "deeply compelling", says Cammie. Once again you can share your games with other WarioWare DIY owners.

17:49:48 - Beginning this summer, you'll be able to auto-upload photos taken with your DSi and send them straight to Facebook. The ten editing lenses "makes it even more fun" to share your photos on Facebook.

17:50:29 - Zelda Spirit Tracks now. "I've played it, and so can you, on the show floor this week."

    >> here's hoping for a Wii Zelda... Please?? There has been on Iwata or Miyamoto yet... <<

17:51:42 - "There has never been so much going on for Nintendo portables... In our world, everyone's game." Another lifestyle montage! Wii Fit. An old man using a remote. A woman playing the DS on an escalator. Another woman walking across a street holding a DS. And now... Iwata's on stage!
    >> Speak of the devil... <<

17:52:23 - He comes on stage to the biggest cheers of the event so far. Tick off "expanded" on your E3 conference bingo sheet.

17:54:03 - Nintendo divides the population into three groups: those who actively play games, those who say they will never play and those who say they might some day. It's the Maybe group which will grow the gaming population. He reckons there are more than 295 million active gamers in the US, Europe and Japan. They buy lots of software. But there are more than 149 million potential players still.
    >> Iwata: Always with the figures! <<

17:54:58 - A photo of some ethnically mixed people holding steering wheels appeal on the screen. Now a woman is shown playing the DS while another woman does her hair. "We have been able to erase the viewpoint that those who never played games in the past will never play them in the future. Our next goal is to create individual titles which satisfy every type of game player."

17:56:35 - I can't keep up with what he's saying. I'm transfixed by all the lifestyle photography and consumed with envy. Why don't I live in a white loft with wooden floorboards and a muscled gentleman with a huge afro?

17:56:52 - He's banging on about space invaders and pong now. A girl is shown playing the DS next to a cat. It's all about making games experienced and less experienced gamers can play together, says Iwata, like Mario Kart Wii.

17:58:06 - He's going on about Wii Sports Resort and Super Mario Bros, Wii and Wii Fit Plus now - these are games all types of gamers can play together. "But I understand this solution may not be entirely convincing."

    >>> C'mon Iwata, get Miyamoto up here to drop a megaton ;) Or just more figures? :s <<<

17:59:26 - "What's next? I though I should give you at least one potential answer. So I'd like to give you a sneak peek at an entirely different way of thinking about games." Brain Age was about training your brain, Wii Fit about your body. "Today, please look for the first time at the Wii Vitality Sensor." You put your finger in a little white module wired up to your Wii remote and it measures your pulse. "The point is to visualise something which otherwise is invisible."
    >>>> Oooooooh kay.... Next up: Wiiabeties testing, and New Super Blood Pressure... ? <<<<

18:00:17 - "The WVS intends to help you see the information relating to the inner world of your body. People would be able to use the product we are developing with this to aid greater relaxation. Maybe everyone under pressure could use this as a way to relax with a videogame."

18:00:32 - Traditionally games have been developed to excite and stimulate, "But in the future they may be used to make you relax and even fall asleep." Doing a good job so far.

Or a sega developed F-zero or Metroid or Kid Icarus! Give us some franchise games!

Wonder if they will show sin and punishment 2?

Live feeds are getting hammered so can't get on.

    Vitality sensor... WTF?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

18:01:23 - He's off, and Cammie's back on. "Thank you, Mr Iwata, for that look into the future." Yes thanks very much. But Cammie's going back to simulation now. Mario is back on screen.

18:02:09 - "A second full 3d Mario title is going to appear on a single console." Trailer shows Mario spinning through space, running round planets, riding Yoshi.

    >>> This is more like it!!! <<<

    >IGN:<
For the first time ever, a second full 3D Mario title is gong to appear on a single Nintendo console. Super Mario Galaxy 2. Yoshi's playable. Mario running around crazy environments. Huge boss battles. Graphics look great, as expected. Rolling a giant snowball around planets. Swimming unerwater.

10:03 a.m.: Bee Mario is back. Puzzles look great in this game. I think Nintendo has ramped it up.
I've said wow a few times. Really digging that Nintendo made Galaxy 2. First was so good. This is the kind of sequel I'm down for.

    Eurogamer:

18:04:54 - Big robots, Mario zooming down ramps, talking to brick monsters, avoiding spinning blades, rolling a snowball round an arctic planet, diving underwater, jumping on a pressure pad, swimming, collecting coins, jumping between platforms, running found a planet as flowers bloom, flying in a bee costume, being stalked by ghost Marios, avoiding giant Koopas, jumping on mushrooms, avoiding giant bullets, spinning out of stars, flying on Yoshi's back. Super Mario Galaxy 2.

18:05:48 - The trailer's over and Reggie's back. He's listing what we've just seen. "But I'll be honest, I read the blogs too. I've been a gamer myself for a long time. I know there are still people out there saying, OK, great, but I want more. That more is generally associated with publishers not named Nintendo. So here are examples of third-party titles with a little harder edge, ones you'll be playing exclusively on Wii before year-end." Starting with The Conduit.

18:06:19 - Conduit trailer. Lots of shooting, robots, explosions, people saying things like, "There's no time, Michael!" But is it compatible with the Vitality Sensor?

18:07:12 - Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles now. More shooting. Blood spatters, Zombies. What no dogs jumping out of the wardrobe?

Bah it's just the Conduit, **** dopes on the live feed chat getting me worked up :(

New dead space shown as well apparently. Have to say the trailer that has been shown looks amazing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

18:08:44 - Dead Space Extraction now. Fine, but when's Super Mario Galaxy 2 out? Reggie's not saying.

    IGN:
10:09 a.m.: Dead Space Extraction is last. Good examples. But hardly newsworthy. Dead Space Extraction trailer shown. This game looks great, even on the big screen. "Third party publishers are drawn to opportunity and right now there is no opportunity larger than Nintendo," says Reggie. But what about Nintendo itself? Could a new, edgier also be coming from us, asks Reggie? "The answer is absolutely.

    Eurogamer:
    18:10:46 -

"But what about Nintendo itself? Could a new, edgier game be coming from us? Absolutely." Come on Reggie! Show us your game! Footage - a stormy sea. The camera pans up through clouds and over a mountain. The Team Ninja logo appears on screen. We're in space now. Missiles are blowing up a space ship. Now a girl in a tight shirt is wandering through a space station, and looking at the sunset. "Any objections lady?" says a man in uniform. It's Metroid: Other M

    >>> JOYGASM!!!! <<<

18:11:48 - In-game stuff now - lava level! Lots of big spiky enemies battling it out. A big explosion. The girl in the Metroid costume says hello to another girl. The numbers 2010 flash up on the screen.

18:12:23 - Back to Reggie. "This historic collaboration is going to reveal a Metroid game unlike any you've experienced before. It will take you deeper into Samus's story and the Metroid universe."

18:13:22 - "We believe we can provide something for everyone. There's a place in gaming for everyone and we remain committed to making Nintendo everyone's game." And it's over. Clapping. Rock music. Time to get the bus to Sony!

Two new Mario's and a new metroid, I'll take that. Wii Zelda would have been truly awesome!

Looks like it's over, no zelda, pikmin or the kid icarus. Not even my favourite vanillaware game that I can't pronounce.

I'm off home to hopefully catch the Sony conference, I've a feeling they will win this E3, they have the most to lose and I'm sure will pull out the stops and their exclusives like GoW 3 and Uncharted 2 look stunning.

The IGN guys are saying that the metroid footage is absolutely mind blowing.

Anyone know where I could catch sight of some Metroid: Other M footage???

The Metroid footage looked incredible alright. There looked to be an extra combat based element rather than all gun blasting, some of the fights with what looked to be bosses looked fantastic. The cut scenes looked top notch.

but seriously, that was the worst press conference I've seen in some time.

    /troll rant

Looks like New Super Mario Bros. 2 may see the return of:
    Koopa Kids
! Also a slightly different new classic controller design.

Clearly you weren't watching last year.

Seriously Mario twice and Metroid is pretty big, lots of exciting 3rd party stuff too.

I think it's fitting to refer back to this from earlier in the thread:
Lame.

Ah come on now, they are releasing more Mario games and another Metroid game ..big whoop. The new dongle thingy that makes the controller do what it should have done in the first place ..wow. Last year we saw ..drum roll..Wii Music ..end drum roll please. Also, we aren't discussing third party at the moment but I really dont think you even want to go there ;)

No zelda for wii and the conference was a bust for you? that a bit daft really isn't it?

Considering that Mario Galaxy was game of the year for a lot of people and the sequel is likely to be every bit as good I'd call that a pretty big deal. Metroid is one of Nintendo's biggest IP's, an all new version is, again a pretty big deal.

I also dont know why I shouldn't go there with the 3rd parties, Conduit, Red Steel 2, Grand Slam Tennis, Tiger Woods 10 and No More Heroes are all proper games, for gamers and they all look excellent so far.

Edit: Forgot Muramasa Demon blade, Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, Bioshock thingy, the list goes on.
