Does anyone know of anywhere cheaper to buy one at the moment apart from this place.

I see it has heart rate and cadence so does this one have everything I might need.

Is it worth getting the SD card for UK & Ireland?

dunno about sites to buy atm, but em not worth it for an sd card can just load up OSM maps for whatever you want easily enough..... haven't run out of space on mine, had a few countries maps on it for a while, depends on detail/res of maps i guess though

    I got mine from handtec.co.uk.

It cost about 394 Euros for the unit, the heart monitor strap and the cadence sensor along with Europe mapping card.

I'm not sure if the offer you've linked to includes the heart monitor strap and cadence sensor to go on the bike.

edit - actually it does include the heart strap and cadence sensor....

    here's the cheapest I've found

Got mine from Handtec too. They don't reply to emails but were very quick and sending out the device.

Also, don't update the device when you buy it.

Got mine delivered from Slane Cycles.

I'd recommend getting the card with European maps for the extra few quid, well worth it, no messing about with maps loading and unloading. Always there wherever you go.

Handy for walking and driving too!

There's pedestrian and car modes available on it - limited functionality compared to in car systems, but enough to get you by.

If going for the maps get them on the DVD, not the microSD card. The DVD includes Mapsource so you can plan routes on the PC. I'd then get a 2gb microSD card for a fiver or whatever and transfer the maps over onto that- all of Europe takes up 1.4gb. If you get the maps on the microSD card you cannot plan routes on the PC.

Only disadvantage of buying on DVD is that you can only unlock the maps to one device while with the microSD card you can move it around- only a concern if you have more than one Garmin device.

You can plan routes on mapmyride.ie, load them on to the garmin training centre and then to the 705.

I find Sporttracks to be much nicer than Garmin Training center.
I still use TC for uploading routes or courses, but for logs and analysis I use ST. It's totally free.

You can load them directly onto the Garmin by just dropping the file on to the device too.

just fyi , bikeroutetoaster also supports sending routes to edge or forerunner's

Oh yeah that's right. I got in the habit of using TC when I still had my Forerunner :)

Thanks for that, will give that a go - is there a specific folder to put them on?

I've had trouble with Training Center frequently failing to send courses to my Edge 305...seems to work after a few reboots.

Can you download a course from MapMyRide, add information points (summit, rest stop etc.) onto it, save it, and then just drag the file to the device in Windows Explorer?

Is there any other way to mark summits than in Training Center (couldn't see this option in MapMyRide) - I find the TC software terrible to use and it never accurately marks the summit?

When sending courses, sometimes I have to do a "receive" first. Then the send always works

Mapsource is far better and more accurate; if you have not already bought and have the choice you are far better off with the DVD.

if you don't have the maps on the pc you could try http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_MapSource to get some

just in case anyone else runs into it with SportTracks and 64bit vista you can't import from garmin devices at the moment(it complains about not having the communicator plugin), if you replace the exe with : http://sporttracks.myosotissp.com/SportTracks-x86.zip it'll work

There should be Garmin folder on the main device. In there is a Courses folder. I've been dropping the tcx files in there.

I got my Garmn delivered this morning. It's on version 2.50, when I plug it in to the computer it says to upgrade it. What should I do as I've heard you shouldn't upload version 2.70. Is there a way to just load version 2.60 or has version 2.80 been released yet?

    2.8 has been released.
Haven't tried it yet as it only came out yesterday.

Actually for those who already have Garmins, the update wipes all data so be warned.

Just updated mine. It does indeed wipe everything, including all display settings (e.g. data fields), time zones etc.

Does it wipe courses/routes/logs that you have saved on the device?

those seemed to be intact on mine anyway, might be worth making a backup all the same...one thing i forgot to reset when i updated was to re-enable the auto pause if you use it

    Just checked. Oddly no. Hmmm.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the 705 stores my ride data on the SD card. Saris (Powertap people) recommend removing the mapping card if you have one, in order to avoid dropped data points from the hub. This suggests that writing to the card is slower than writing to memory, and that the Garmin uses the card preferentially.

So, if you have an SD card maybe remove it during the update to be sure, but it should be OK.

My Garmin writes everything to the device itself by the looks of things. Going to be moving my maps to the SD card in the hopes it'll stop it crashing so often while using the maps.

Ah. Given that they're regularly going for £200+ on ebay though, it seems to be too good to be true anyway!
