Despite all the talk of recession, I'm yet to speak to one person (who is looking) that can't find or hasn't found a job.

    Are you being selective?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,100 ✭✭✭Browney7

Hand a few CV's into a few bookies in the city. Lot of evening racing these days a few places might have a few hours going.

You know me, and I cant find a job!

I've handed out numerous CV's in Limerick city and am yet to receive any positive responses :(
I've checked online like the OP, and nothing positive there either..

As for qualifications, I've spent 13 years working in bars, hotels, college bars, nightclubs, and Storm Cinema in Castletroy, and I'm only 24 now...U may not believe me, but I dont care, I know where and what I've done since I was 11 years old...I have also worked for Intel and tbh that was a waste of time, cos its not what I want to do..

If anybody knows of anything going in the pub/club/off-trade please PM me...
Tbh, I'd take any job at the minute, I've got qualifications...With 2 college qualifications, and plenty of job experience, its still hard to find a job...

The masters I'm hoping to do in Sept is dependent on funds...so I need a job!

and no offense Ninty9er, but take off ur FF hat for a few mins, and see how hard it really is to get a job in the current climate, even for people with degrees and experience!

I have been looking for 4 months now, had been it manager but looking at any kind of work at the moment. Applied for hundreds of jobs in the meantime, from data entry, customer service, tech support, even a debt collector, nothing yet, and very few responses.
There is a huge shortage of jobs at the moment, dont let anyone fool themselves into thinking otherwise.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭irishvamp90

    well said phill106.
im starting going to the fas office and these C.E only jobs really piss me off.there was 3 jobs advertised with in 5 min walk of my house but cant apply because im not long term unemployed.....community employment my hole.what ye all thing of that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 963 ✭✭✭Richy06

There's **** all jobs going around the city. I have a job and my hours are being cut so I had to sign on. My girlfriend who has a lot of experience in different fields and college qualifications handed out reams of CVs around Limerick, to no avail.

    You're not alone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭irishvamp90

Nothing in the post or the independent this week excpect direct sales:(...and lots of jobs in the fas office but im not allowed apply over the fcking C.e scheme

You will be probably be battling out with the 700 odd people that finished up from their jobs last Friday.

TravelLodge are looking for staff for their new hotel in Castletroy, Lidl/Aldi/Dunnes constantly looking, The Strand, Ardhu, Corbally Clinic, petrol stations etc... Companies are constantly looking for promo staff and the mobile phone sales companies are a good place to keep a look out.

I know people are being made redundant, my own mother was told today she is being made redundant at the end of the month as administration is being centralised in London, but if you think there's **** all jobs, you either a) aren't looking hard enough, or b) aren't willing to take whatever you can get or c) are joining in the medja frenzy that everything is turning to ****.

You can't just drop in a CV and expect to hear back, you've got to follow it up.

Nobody is claiming it's easy to get a job, but one sure as hell won't fall into your lap on boards.ie.

Just picked up a copy of the post there lads and noticed that there are two places looking for staff - the Highway Bar and an unnamed shop. You have to drop a cv into the bar and leave a cv into a box no. with the post for the other one.

Also everyone seems to be handing out cv's around the city which is easy to do but have ye tried the outskirts?

Call the bar and ask for Alan Patterson. He is the manager. Very nice guy. Tell him who you are and that you are a hard worker and reliable.

Knowing the guy very well, this is what he is looking for.(experience would be good also) but calling him will at least get bonus points in the selection process because every tom dick and harry is applying.

What the hell do you think students live off?? and dont even attempt to say parents..

we're not some form of sub-species, we still have to eat, pay rent, pay tuition, pay for books, run a car, etc etc

I'm sick of people giving students that are looking for work a hard time, fcuk off back to college if ye think its such a barrel of laughs.....

Read what I wrote and untangle your knickers. I never said you weren't trying, I never said everyone was hiring and I have no recollection of a grants conversation, but feel free to post a link and I'll deal with that too.

Therein lies the problem. If you try Ladbrokes, Boyles, Powers, Bamburys, Hacketts or Mulhollands you will surely hear back from one of them. Evening racing has started as I said and with staff taking holidays you could get some part time hours, hell even full time if your lucky. It's worth a try. You could do a hell of a lot worse.

Part-time education implies that you are in education part of the time and only available for work part of the time.

The other issue there is that FÁS pays part of the wage in some of those cases as the people who take them are considered to be in training.

Well there alot of the jobs in fas advertised as part time or a contract of x amount of hours.I make it clear im free full time for the summer and happy to be part time from sept in my cover letters and c.v's.My dad had to deal with c.e workers before and they send him scobes who didnt want their dole stopped

FAS, about as much use as a sack of wet spuds. A waste of taxpayers money. I recall forwarding my C.V. and supplying my details to FAS when I finished college an they did absolutely nothing for me, and that was in the relatively good times. I actually felt I was bothering them when I went in. As if dealing with somebody coming in of the street looking for a job was outside their normal working day duties or something. Hopefully they will be outsed along with FF come next general election.

Was looking for part-time work to supplement my income as I plan to buy a house in the next few years. Haven't being pro-actively looking yet as was at a part-time course up until now. One thing I had in my head was the tyre fitters. There are plenty of them dotted around the outskirts of the city. It surley doesn't require a degree (no offence tyre fitter lads). Would there be any demand for workers from the ones that open on a Saturday? Any thoughts?

Also some folk are suggesting bookies as many are now open for late evening racing. I think I for one would be willing to give this a go. Any experience required though? Appart from dealing with irrate customers I think it might be a handy enough number. Are there any other downsides to it?

Not if they're part-time degree courses..
