Supersize Teens: Can't Stop Eating

This is on UTV right now, it has a couple of young girls opting for gastric bypass/band operations.

One girl is 13 years old & 24 stone going for the bypass.

The other is 14 and 19 stone going for the band (reversable).

Apparently after 'years' of dieting the 14 year old has still gained the weight, and the mother is going private for the surgery because there isn't any health problems as yet, it's costing her 25k and the main excuse seems to be because she's going into high school!

It goes without saying that both mothers are overweight themselves.

Now, I'm all for this type of surgery in emergency situations, but these girls, at the ages they are at, should not be having life threatening surgery ffs!! Some training and education on proper nutrition and the weight will fall off them!! Imagine how many hours of personal training 25k will pay for?

It's the parents fault either way. What's done is done and I wouldn't be suprised if the parents had set them in their way in terms of eating habbits.

You lead by example in this life, sort the parents out. Drill it into their head what healthy eating/exercise is, then the kids /should\ follow in their footsteps.

One of the girls uses a breathing apparatus when sleeping because her fat is choking her by putting to much pressure on her throat. Thats ****ing crazy:eek:

You do realise that everyone who *doesn't* have kids makes a similar statement?

There is no way children should be allowed have these type of surgeries, its disgraceful.

They should be taken out of their homes for 6 months into a normal household where food isn't everything. (ok stupid idea) But they'd probably lose the same amount of weight...The girl who just had surgery just ate 'mushed' up KFC. Oh dear.

Do the kids have both parents? I've heard kids being spoiled with food as a means to try make up for missing a parent.

not too sure. One of them certainly has a big family (and therefore you'd think a big support network). I'd feel SO guilty if I had a kid who needed to have this kind of surgery. Like I'd failed them or something.

Last I heard big families meant not a lot of food going about

i don't think they should be allowed to have surgeries at that age and the problem i have with these surgeries is that it may make the patient lose weight and all but in some cases doesn't change the patients relationship with food which is what caused them to get so big in the first place. case in point was the second girl - not victoria - the other one. she stated how she wanted chocolate, twix, cookies etc but i also guess she didn't exactly have an iron cast family support with them scoffing kfc in front of her after surgery

I think the main girl in its father was a soldier stationed abroad.

Saw this last night, has to be said that the state the parents have allowed these children to get it in is tantamount to child abuse.

Some people should not be allowed to have children in my opinion, kids eating habits are a direct result of their parents and the directions given by them from a very early age.

Can you imagine the issues these children will have throughout their lives? really scary stuff to be honest and the ultimate Cop-out by all involved by having surgery should not be allowed.

In cases like this I don't think getting a PT would be worthwhile, they're just going to have to go back into the same home with all the junk food in the presses...unless, of course they spent the 25k sorting out the whole family, group training sessions, group sessions with a nutritionist etc etc

Although, that being said, even with the surgery they're still going to have to go back into the same house and be surrounded by the people who introduced them to the eating habits that allowed them to get so big in the first place.
