AAAaaaaaghhh!! It's on today. Darn, now I have try and plan how I'm going to be able to get around. I look on their website and find this - "this Event is strictly for FEMALES ONLY - MALES ARE NOT ALLOWED"

So for years thems wimmins give out about male-only golf clubs, take them to the equality tribunals etc, etc - and yet sexist events like this are organised involving my area - with what consideration for the natives? I'm beginning to wonder what the difference is between this and contentious marches that take place in the north...

    So should I:

    A) Put on a dress and infiltrate

    B) Organise a sit-down protest - open to all, not just for men

    C) Atari Jaguar

And why's it called a mini "marathon" anyway? It's either a marathon which is 42.195 kilometres / 26 miles 385 yards, or else it's not a marathon - same as you can't just have a "mini pregnancy"... :pac:

PS The organisers should get a web designer who would at least be able to get their clock on the right date, http://www.florawomensminimarathon.ie/ ... Tsk, tsk, wimmen's

lol @ the wimmens; Can't live with them nor can we live without them.

But yes, I think you should dress up in tights, a dress and the rest of the lark and win that "Marathon" and show the wimmens who's boss around here.

There was one for men last Bank Holiday weekend, but apparently there was a disappointing turnout.

It's a pity they can't do the women's mini marathon now, have to admit the men provide a bit of craic on the day!

    It's for charity...

    pftt..it's a 10k walk/run not a bloody marathon.
I did the NY marathon last year (my first) and I think calling 10Ks a mini-marathon is a joke.
If you'r going to do a marathon do a proper one.

And girls..while you're going for a short run pick me up 20 cigs and a 6 pack from the offie.

And it was in the Phoenix Park, much less disruption

Dismal isn't it? Not a marathon, segregated, disrupting the highway, and all for charridy. We're great are we not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭kelle

Does it really matter what it's called, we know we're not running a marathon. It's great motivation to keep fit throughout the year, and I'm so looking forward to this afternoon!

I like the way it is on in the afternoon because the wimmin are too lazy to get up in the morning for it!

All the culchies were in Liffey Valley this morning scoffing chips on their way to the marathon. All that lycra and tight tshirts... Oh god...

It's to commemorate Pheidippideia, who was sent to tell the Athenians about their victory at Marathon, but had to stop after six miles because she couldn't read the map and her feet hurt.

An event that happens one day a year for charity.

FFS people have very little to complain about if this is what you're complaining about

Does the charidee shell out for all the garda overtime as well??

Why are yokes like this not whooshed away up to the phoenix park where they belong?

While reporting the mini marathon on the one o clock news today, RTE, for some odd reason, showed footage of a car being lifted onto the back of a truck. I wonder who made that connection.

There were several men there in drag.

Congrats to everyone who completed the mini "marathon" today and pay no attention to the begrudging "poster" of this "thread".

    5. Prior to 1983 it was almost unknown for women to train in public places - the Women's Mini Marathon changed all that.

I thought men were banned from entering. From what I saw today, I guess there were applicants called Petra, Thomasina and Antoinette.

Just about squeezed onto the train at Pearse today with all the damn mini-marathoners

Just to set the record straight...
    • The legend of Pheidippides was honored by a 24.85 mile (40,000 meters) run from Marathon Bridge to Olympic stadium in Athens.
    • At the 1908 Olympic Games in London, the marathon distance was changed to 26.2 miles to cover the ground from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium, with the 2.2 miles added on so the race could finish in front of royal family's viewing box.

Jesus, it's for charity, lighten up. Besides I saw loads of men at it, dressed in drag, for the laugh.
    pftt..it's a 10k walk/run not a bloody marathon.

If you'r going to do a marathon do a proper one.

Does it matter, really? Some people wouldn't be able/fit enough to do a proper marathon- the 10 k might suit them better.

So what? At least they were getting up off their arses and doing something for charity.

So sorry that their choice of clothing offends you.

Thank you, my point exactly.Maybe if some people spent less time moaning on AH and doing something worthwhile...they wouldn't have so much to moan about! :pac:

Nothing wrong with doing a 10k but dont call it a marathon.

Its pretty frustrating when you train for months and struggle through 26.2 miles and somebody says they ran the marathon meaning a 10k. Then your the arsehole if you point out the difference:D.

Thinking about it who cares really, maybe it shouldnt matter, its just a pet peeve amongst runners and I imagine the vast majority of people could not give two ****es. You can see where the frustration comes from though.

Well, yeah, but the vast majority of people doing the ''marathon'' today wouldn't be even amateur runners- there just doing it for the craic, not to boast about doing a marathon (well, mostly!). :pac::)

It's not women only, men can do it but they gotta wear a dress for the spirit of the thing. Mostly it's just a bit of a laugh or people do it for charity. Have done it twice myself, tis only 10km and only takes an hour or so and is a good bit of craic

Just while we're on about Marathons, something that I always found funny - the story of Rose Ruiz:
Ruiz, a New York native, set the pace for all marathon cheats to follow.

On April. 21, 1980, the 23-year-old Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. She did it in the third-fastest time ever recorded for a female runner (two hours, 31 minutes, 56 seconds).

Quite the victory considering she was barely sweating when crowned with the winner's wreath. Marathon organizers were immediately suspicious, and after some investigation course officials had no evidence of Ruiz passing checkpoints and fellow competitors had no recollection of her.

Eventually a few spectators came forward and said they saw Ruiz join the race during its final half-mile. It seems that she had sprinted to the finish line.

What makes Ruiz an even bigger cheat is that she also deceived race officials in the New York Marathon, the race she used to qualify for the Boston event. Apparently she got her above-average time by riding the Manhattan subway.

Boston organizers stripped Ruiz of her title and awarded it to the real winner, Jacqueline Gareau.
    :D

    Well done ladies.

Although the idea of running 10k in todays heat is insane.

    pics?

I mean if the immigration issue is as bad as some on AH would make us think, shouldnt we have had loads of hot eastern europeans in marathon gear?

i came through town twice yesterday. saw girls getting ready for it/coming back who were all shapes and sizes and judging by looks, nationalities.

looked to be a lot of craic but in the spirit of begrudgery started in this thread

    1. it's only 10km.
    2. you can walk it.
    3. a lot of women seemed chuffed with their medals.
    4. flora mass marketing.
    5. no men allowed enter?
