For someone who suffered two car crashes those exercises might be too advanced cardio. Op if you are getting physio for your injury then the best person to ask about this is the physiotherapist.

Dear fecking jesus no! A physio is that, a physio. the amount of injuries I have seen from people getting exercises of physios is a disgrace, majority just do not have the knowledge for it.
For example, I was training a marathon runner and he was getting some physio work done on his back and hamstrings, after some rehab work from me and some work from the physio he had improved considerably. The physio rang me up to say that the marathon runner should now start performing power cleans to improve further! That sums up the average physio (i'm not saying all physios are bad but a lot are).

If he did the above he would end back up in physio for twice as long. Please please do not give advice on a serious matter if you don't know what your talking about
OP focus on planks, side planks, bird-dogs and avoid weighted ab exercises and crunches, will put do much pressure on your lumbar spine and probably knock you back further

HI there, I would recommend a beginner Pilates Class. THis is a slow and controlled class that will work on your core (abdominal Muscles & lower back)
Try to find a small class and make sure you tell the Instructor about your history.

And also make sure it is a beginner and not an advanced class, as you will need a lot of instruction to ensure you have the correct technique.
