Westpark or Jackie Skelly Rathfarnham?

    Hi,

I was in Westpark there yesterday on a trial membership as I'm looking to join either of the two gyms named above. The gym area in Westaprk was quite good, but the only fault I could find was that the changing rooms seem to be a bit cramped, and felt a little bit overcrowded at the time. There was also a pool of water on the floor near the sinks. I know, being the weekend it was probably at its busiest, but I still like to have some space to myself when I'm getting changed.

I took a tour of JS in Rathfarnham and got a quote for membership. I'm just wondering if anyone would know how big the changing rooms are and how busy it usually gets in Jackie Skelly Rathfarnham?

You talking about westpark in Tallaght? I used to be a member there, tis grand, weights area is good enough, lots of cardio machines, very busy after work but most gyms are.

Through reputation alone I wouldn't go near Jackie Skellys.

Yes, Westpark in Tallaght. As I said, the gym area was fine, but I thought the changing room was too small. I'd be willing to go to Jackie Skelly if it wasn't so crowded. When I was on the tour in JS, there were only a handful of people in the gym area, although that was at lunchtime on a weekday.

I'm a member in Westpark, for the last 4 years...it's not normally quite busy until around 5-7pm when most come from work. The weekends can be busy too, as (and this explains the water) parents are allowed bring their children along to swim in a section of the pool area. I do agree with you though about the changing rooms they can be very cramped, so much so that sometimes i'll just head home to take a shower...

The free weight area too could do with an improvement, with only one good weight bench, the other being dangerously shaky. Further, only one squat rack...

    I'd have to agree.

I've never even been into one of their gyms, but a friend of mine worked as a promoter for them - literally hundreds of people approached her cursing the place and complaining.

Apparently, once you sign up, you'll have a very, very hard time leaving!

Don't go near Jackie Skellys, they are shower of money grabbing fcukers (IMO). I was a member of the Clarendon St one and they charge you to leave, insisting that you give 2 months notice and pay for those months. They treat their members very badly. Not only that, but the prices they charge for membership are steap and the standard of equipment is crap as well - no free bench or squat rack, only smith machines. I felt so badly treated by them, particularly when it came to the leaving thing that I would recommend steering well clear of the shower.

That's the thing though- I want to be able to have a shower and get changed in the gym, because it wouldn't be too comfortable driving home in my gym gear.

Jackie Skelly's seem to be taking a fair bit of criticism here. The truth is they are actually €60 cheaper than Westpark, and membership will allow me to use all the other JS gyms.

The JS Rathfarnham gym seemed quite clean when I was on the tour, and the equipment would be more than adequate for my needs. Not too interested in weights at the moment anyway.

Re 2 months notice to leave: I saw this on another thread about the JS gyms. I wouldn't have a problem with this; I will make sure to read the contract very carefully before signing, and if I decide to ultimately leave, I will provide 2 months notice before my membership is up.

All I'm trying to find out is whether the changing area in Jackie Skelly Rathfarnham is large enough, and whether it becomes too crowded during busier periods?
(I didn't get a chance to look in the changing area when I was given a tour of the gym)

    Where do you live OP?

There's a fair gap between Tallaght and Rathfarnham at certain times

I'm in Westpark the last few years and find it good

I agree about the weights area, and the changing rooms being packed, but this actually only happens about 1/10 visits

Nice pool, loads of classes. Does the job!

JS Rathfarnham is fine, I put a bit of a review on it up recently. It never gets ridiculously crowded and I've never been waiting for a machine. The pool is a bit hit and miss - both the spa and pool water quality and temperature seem a bit random. The place is kept pretty clean and there's always a cleaner on. The big mark against it is that there's too many kids (and their annoying parents). Make sure you haggle about the price - they are flexible if you don't appear totally convinced about it. I think you can have a trial free day pass too which it might be a good idea to do so you can have a look at the place properly.

Closer to JS Rathfarnham, but I was willing to travel to Westpark after reading some of the reviews/criticism of the JS gyms. However, seeing as the changing rooms are a bit cramped in Westpark and it's more expensive too, I think I might go with JS.
