It's this indie band, pretty obscure, I doubt you've heard of them.

The lead singer is lovely, very tall and down to earth

Hey! I pay my fcuking taxes. If you are happy being "entertained" by Bono telling you to shut up and consume, then good for you.

    ****, quoted wrong post:

    Actually, no.

they shifted their operations when the tax law was changed to say they would have to pay more taxes. they avoided paying taxes due to them in the country which brought them so much fame and fortune to begin with.

U2 could lift the national gloom by disappearing off vowing mever to appear in the public eye again.

I want to say by ripping out Bongos vocal chords out,but the boy can sing thats for sure, its when he talks that his face grows a talking arse.

So I'm going to say they are going to give everyone in the country a Euro to invest National Irish Bank,to keep for a rainy day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭faigs

I thought they were the country's most popular band, why does everyone hate them here? Not a big fan myself but why get so worked up about them? Typical Irish begrudgery?

They must have good accountants to legally not pay those taxes, I'd do the same if I was running a big business. Fair play to them they obviously know how to exploit loopholes. That's what they're there for!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,358 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Maybe if they play a concert free of charge, that may do some good, because I certainly wouldn't pay to see the sh1te they played tonight.
Living off their past successes. Their current stuff is rubbish!

    Typical Irish begrudgery ???

I said "the boy can sing" and U2 aren't one of the biggest bands in the world for nothing, same as Bongo can be the biggest arse in the world,I don't need some pompous midget telling me about the poor in Africa while his personal fortune gets bigger.

I don't even begrudge his fortune,I begrudge hypocrisy.

Sorry to crash the thread, but the problem with Bono is not just taking his tax euros to Holland but the fact he preaches to us ordinary folk about donating to the less fortunate. Compared to him we are all less fortunate!!! His family stilll live in Ireland and use what public services we have that he refuses to contribute to. I do not begrudge him his success, he worked for it, but I resent his hypocracy and holier than thou attitude.:P:P:P

But at least he does publicise charities etc, he's in a position where he can be heard by millions and he makes an effort to do some good. It's better than doing nothing! Just because the business he's involved in is worth a fortune doesn't mean he should give a big chunk of it's profits to charity, I'm sure he has uses for it like you or I would if we were in that position. He does contribute to charities I'm sure but its not like the four of them can conquer world debt.

I'm looking forward to standing in CP watchin a truly great band. If it's anything like 05', I'll still be happy.

Yeah, isn't it just a pity we didn't have the likes of Bono around when the christian bros and nuns were raping and battering children. Now, the whole of Ireland is tripping over themselves to help the poor African children:rolleyes:

Bongo was rubbing shoulders with the likes of George Bush and other US politicans about lowering the national debt of poor countries that were in debt to them, soon after he became a shareholder in Forbes magazine, people in Africa are still poor and dying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭faigs

I never said he was making a big impact did I? I just said he was making an effort to publicise charities. It's not like he's a national leader or anything so that comparison you made is just silly. There are problems and tragedys all over the world, no leader or campaigner could ever keep everyone happy and give due time and effort to all of them.

    Wait.
    Wait.
    Let me get this right.
    Are you saying that Bono...
Hang on. This is quite bizarre and I'm trying to get my head around it.
Sorry. You're going to have to clarify this for me.
What the fúck does institutional child abuse have to do with anything U2 related?
Seriously. There's good ol' Bono bashing, but you're just really reaching here.
How did you even equate those two things?
I had to embolden the WTF bit to emphasise how confused I am about that post. It's like the Chewbacca defence. It just doesn't make sense.
I mean the whole not paying any taxes thing is stretching it, but you've just gone to a whole new level with that.

    I'm a U2 fan. I don't deny it, even though it's not cool.
I admire Bono as a musician and as a spokesperson, but he's ****ing not God.
Did you expect him to somehow make with the loaves and the fishes?

Hey there Mr. wheat farmer. (read this in a silly voice) My name is Bono and I want you to give your surplus grain to starving people in Africa.

Dear Mr. Bono, if that is your real name.
I'm holding on to my grain and I'm going to sell it because I live in a capitalist country. Please die.
    Yours sincerely, Mr. Wheat farmer.

Hmm. Seems to me that things just are not that clear cut.
Anyway, I'm out of here. I think Hollyoaks is on. It's a bit more believable than some of the things I've read here.

Really? Feeding the world on his own?
    Combatting institutional child abuse?
I'm the U2 fan and even I don't expect this from him.

Do you both really believe what you posted here?
I could ban you for trolling, but then you'd just tell me that you were being honest and then my head would explode.

    Hollyoaks it is then.

Just put Bono in a dunk tank, a euro a go. National gloom lifted and recession over.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 50 ✭✭like clockwork!

I wont lie, I think U2 are a good band.
    :(

Also, I didn't mind Pat Kenny at all. Can't see this Tubridy fella doing a better job at the Late Late to be honest. Pissed me off when he wouldn't immediately take a 10% pay cut but besides that I have no gripes with him.

I think lots of people on here feel the need to either exageratte their ill-feelings towards U2, Bono and Pat Kenny or lie altogether about the fact that they don't mind them. U2 are obviously liked by a lot of people seing that they are maybe the most sucessful band in the world?

I understand that Bono a tax dodging cnut. But I would be too if I had as much money as him and could do it. Yeah he probably helps out third world countries etc ultimately to make himself look/ feel good but, eh, isn't that the motivation in all acts of altruism and kindness?
Like, if you were a billionaire and you donated a billion euro towards helping people in the third world, would you in truth prefer if nobody in the world EVER found out, or if it got leaked out into the media? EVERYBODY would ultimately prefer for people to know because it makes THEM feel good.

Well i tell you something esle, irsih people get the politicians they deserve and the "entertainers" they deserve.
For people to go running out to buy tickets to see that bunch of tax-dodging,americanised scum is nothing short of an act of national treason.
Thier whole poxy gig shouldve been boycotted, they've long since proven they could give less of a shiit about this country and they have the cheek to charge 140 quid a ticket in the middle of a recession.
I really, really hope that thier tax affairs are investigated and they get thrown in prison along with the lickspittles paying so they can spirit yet more cash out of the country.

C'mon, surely you didn't think I meant Bono was responsible
for the institutionalised abuse from the past?
If that is what you interpreted from my original post, it is
    so wrong of you!

Read the post again and you will see that I never
blamed or even hinted that Bono or U2
had anything to do with the child abuse situation!
To do so would be preposterous

What I menat was that it's a pity we didn't have the "likes"
of a Bono to fight for the oppressed an abused that suffered
for years here in our own country. The same abusers were also collecting the 'penny for the black baby.'
