I'm easy. I just want to get a few hours in before the Swords randonee on Sunday.

Would like to join ye, but don't know if I'd be able to keep up. What's the pace like these days ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Count me in. 9 am Dundrum sounds good. I'd be up for a nice ~80km spin, hopefully the weather is as nice as today.

    Checks met.ie:
The coming Bank Holiday weekend will be dry throughout the country, with strong sunshine expected each day. The prevailing winds will be moderate or fresh southeasterly on Saturday, light to moderate easterly on Sunday and then moderate, locally fresh, east to northeast on Bank Holiday Monday. Coastal margins exposed to these winds will be the coolest locations, with typical maximum temperatures in the mid to high teens Celsius; however, other areas will be much warmer during the daytime, with afternoon maxima in the low twenties Celsius, and some inland areas reaching the mid-twenties. By night, it will be cooler overall, with mist or shallow fog patches in places.

Pace is always based on the principle of "no man/woman gets left behind".

I suppose it can seem intimidating from the outset, but it's not competitive at all. The best parts are generally the coffee stops, great views and sometimes the little one-on-one competitions like "x beat y up the sally gap".

You should definitely head out. One spin and I guarantee you will be hooked, or your money back.

Hi, Newbie on here, keen to join you this Saturday. Where exactly do you meet up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,278 ✭✭✭kenmc

    I'm in too,
@waitforme. the meet point is directly under the luas bridge in Dundrum; the junction of Dundrum road and Taney Road. Diagonally opposite Joe Dalys bike shop (i.e. the other end of the bridge from that).

Would anyone be driving to to Dundrum and maybe bringing a track pump with them ? I left mine in Waterford last weekend.

    You should also try Cyclelogical.......

....some day soon I hope to have the legs to go on one of these spins and not embarass myself......

Never fear, even when you have the legs you can still embarass yourself.

I might be on for this. I'm not sure I can sit out this fine weather, even if it puts me out for Sunday.

I will at some stage, although getting to Dundrum will need a bit of organising as I'm way, way over on the Northside.

Enjoy it, looks like it'll be a great day for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,724 ✭✭✭kennyb3

anyone around on the north side for a spin. only started this week, but did a nice 30km at 26.5kmph yesterday, reckon i can manage 50 to 60km tomorrow round that speed

I would be on for this too, as is Barrabus from talking to him last night. Damn you tonto for getting in with your 9am start.

Hey, if Raam can get down from DNS for 9am, I can't see why you can't make it out from your nearby lair.

P.S. How did you manage to get three punctures last night?

    Dublin 19 - Meath!!!

My cycling activities would be somewhat curtailed this weekend. Planning to out early for an hour or two over Bellewstown and the Naul (it's closest decent hills I've got!) on Saturday morning at about 7-00am, then something similar on Monday.

Good weather is something of a double edged sword when it comes to cycling and family life!

True......but after a morning of climbing the hills of Wicklow, I could be a long time getting back to base.

That would definitely be a "your-dinners-in-the-dog" offence......

Will see how the achilles holds up. With the WW200 next week, 260km+ in two days is asking for trouble. Still, I can always bail out early on Sunday.

Am indeed know the Naul hills well ! Try to avoid Bellewstown unless feeling very brave especially the one that goes straight up though the racecourse

(sorry for going way off topic BTW)

There is something wrong with either my new R-SYS rim or the tyre I put on it- transferred the tyre over last night from my DT wheels and first inflation last night with the track pump the bead unseated, tube came out, bang. Noticed that the bead would not seat properly around the valve area. With some difficulty, got it seated, inflated, and it was OK cycling out to the race but went bang again around 16km in. To be honest I was just happy I didn't crash, explosive loss of pressure in the front wheel doing a fast pace in the middle of a tight group was a bit scary. I was lucky it was not on a corner.

Checking the tyre though there was a gash in the sidewall (these are often caused by the explosion I think) so not 100% sure it was related- but on fixing the puncture again the bead would not seat, finally got it on but it exploded again within a few seconds of setting back off. Walking back got a tube off a kind Tiernan's chap but again bead seat problems and there was a hole in the tube beside the valve before I even inflated it, not sure if it was there already or if I caused it, he mentioned he was not sure if the tube was OK.

Got a lift home from barrabus.

Hopefully a new tyre will sort it.

I'm also planning on doing the Swords thing Sunday, on a fixie. W200 is just another weekend spin :)

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

That's an odd one alright. I've sometimes found that particular combinations of rims and tyres have problems seating around, especially around the valve area. My wife has gatorskins on her bike and you need to be really careful putting them on. She got a specutacular blow out one morning, which was thankfully while rolling up to a set of lights.

Still, I'd check the rim really carefully to see if there's not some sort of issue there.

How long will they take to cook? I'm guessing if the fire goes on @ 2, you'll be cooking by 3, so we should arrive around 3:30? Presume it's BYOBeer?

Thanks for all the encouragement icon7.gif. I'll give it a go - can always bale out if the going gets too tough ! See you all at 9.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 72 ✭✭waitforme

I'm in too, it's my first time out, so another potential early bailer here too. Will try my best though to stay the distance (he says, not knowing what 'the distance' actually is).

Any idea of average speed, to help me get a feel for what I'm turning up to?
