Benching: Using the power rack for heavy singles

I feel recently that having no spotter in the gym is holding me back on the bench. Would using the safety bars on the power rack be a suitable way of self-spotting? If i could manage to position the bars so that they were 1 or 2 inches above my chest it could work out to be the equivalent of 1 or 2 board press maybe?

I figure that if i fail on one i could just leave it on the bars and slide it away so i could get up. Anyone do this? I know some people use the rack for locking out the last 4-6 inches, but would it be viable for a full range press (or almost full range)?

If i found myself comfortable benching xxkg 1 or 2 inches from my chest for x reps, am i going to find it considerably harder when i go back to touching off the chest? Thanks

If you bench correctly then you should be able to do a full ROM bench using the safety bars.

If your back is arched and your belly up the safety bars should be positionable at a point that is below where you touch the bar during the movement but above your chest/neck when you are relaxed.
