Not much being said about this race so I thought I'd get something going seeing as its on this saturday. Big one at that, 2500 people taking part. Heres my predicted(hoped for)times:

    1.5km Swim 22mins
    40km Bike 58mins
    10k run 36mins

    So folks call your time(s).

Weather is meant to be fine aswell, so its looking pretty good.
    Cheers

    Sub 2hrs

    for the sprint :D

haha I posted a thread about this exact same thing yesterday and it got ignored.

    I'm doing Olympic.

    Swim: 35mins
    Bike: 1hr 50 (Hybrid Bike)
    Run: 52mins

Allowing 4 mins for each transition

    Total: 3hrs 25

I've a question about the race numbers. How many do they give out? I assume one for the cycle leg, one for the run leg, one small one for your helmet and one small one to go on your bike (this is how Athlone did it last year). I'm assuming you dont have to wear one during the swim. The race briefing says nothing about this.

Also I'm in the 2nd last wave and am a slow cyclist (partly due to having a slow bike) so am worried I will end up being the last on the course. I hope the race officials dont forget I'm on the course and think the race is over and leave. The last thing I need after 3 hours of torture is to run off course.

haven't done athy before, but it is supposed to be fast, so............

    25 swim
    1:05 bike
    39 run

    2:10 total (hopefully) :)

    Olympic
    swim 25min (Wave 3 - I'll be wearing a black wetsuit and a colored hat :-))
    cycle 1h10min
    run 52min
    T1 & T2 = 5min
    Total = 2h32min

A bit of (educated) guessing...this will be my first triathlon.

    Doing Sprint myself

    Swim 10:30 (depends on current)

Bike 33:00 (Cant remember if its exactly 20km so this would depend on that)
    T2 0:50
Run 23:00 (I think its a bit longer than 5km - based on last yrs results)

    Total: 1:09:10

Hoping for sub 2:30 in the olympic

    Maybe something like
    swim sub 32min
    cycle 1h13min
    run sub 40min
    T1 & T2 = 5min

1:10 in Kilcock last weekend. Allowing for the extra distances this week I'm hoping for a 1:15. 10 minutes better than last year.

    Swim 750m 12:00
    T1 2:00
    Bike 20k 37:00
    T2 1:00
    Run 23:00

You stopping for tea and a bagel? Transition will be faster than that.

I'll looking for something similar, about 2.30.
    Swim 30 mins
    Cycle 80 mins
    Run 40 mins

Ya Clum I've just rechecked last years results in more detail and if the coarse is same as lasts years I would hope to better than 2:30.

So heres hoping that the swim and bike and T's will be faster than I first planned.

Also if you just put on your wetsuit, lie on your back and float down the river you will be a lot faster than 32 mins

just hope they get my emails and remove me from the sprint and up to the olympic seeing as that's what I paid for.

Ok, I'll give it a lash but really depends on how I feel on the day if I'll push for these or not

Swim - No idea 24-25 ish
    T1 - 1.5mins barring disaster
Bike - 1'06' and change and I'm happy
T2 - less than 60 sec barring disaster
Run - Better than my Joey run of 41'39"

Summed up to just under 2'15 all going well :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,032 ✭✭✭McTigs

Woefully ill prepared for my second ever triathlon, nevertheless...

    Swim 30 mins
    T1 3 mins
    Cycle 75 mins
    T2 2 mins
    Run 55 mins

Aiming for 2h45mins and i will be delighted if i acheive this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,047 ✭✭✭griffin100

Hmmm, was hoping for a sub 3hr in my first olympic race but hoping to go a little bit faster now given (a) the swim will be fast (I hope) and (b) I did a 1.15 sprint in Kilcock last week.

    Prediction:
    • Swim 34 minutes
    • Bike 80 minutes
    • Run 53 minutes
    • Transitions 3 minutes
    Total: 2hrs 50mins

Any thing around this and I'll be really happy:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,193 ✭✭✭liamo

2:45 or under for the olympic would be satisfactory.
2:38 is my target - anything under that would be a bonus.

    Swim : 25 minutes
    Bike : 75 minutes
    Run : 55 minutes
    T1 + T2 : 3 minutes

    Total: 2hrs 38mins

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 381 ✭✭DAVE_K

    Swim: Sub 20 mins
Bike: Sub 1:20 - really badly prepared for this
    Run: Sub 47 mins

    Total: Sub 2:30

Anyone know if they are going to make us swim upstream at the end or will it all be downstream?

When i was in Athy on Sunday last for the swim, i asked same question to Brian.
The water level last sunday had already dropped for a foot (though current was strong, so 1500m was entirely downstream), and he was pretty confident that it will drop further (hence less current) as the weather was to stay dry. Weather has been good and forecast is very good for today and tomorrow.
So, i think it is go for 1100m down + 400 upstream:)

I haven't found a map of the bike or run course anywhere on the website.
Does anybody have a link / it mapped out on google maps or anything?

    cheers

    Swim: About 24 mins
    Bike: 1:15
    Run: 48 mins

    Total: 2:35

the new run course is available here (taken from the triathy website.

they have a blessings of the Gods! Last years weather was fantastic and it looks like its gonna be another great day weather wise! I like the look of the live leader tracker but alas I'll be out marshalling at the Olympic so I wont get to see it. Was looking forward to seeing Aileen Morrison in transition so I can try learn a little more but hopefully i spot her on the bike at least

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Poncherello

Be dleighted with sub 2.20 all depends on my run and how close I can get to 45 mins
anyone any idea which way the wind will be on the bike ?

Worth spotting too ;) One of my favourite moments in the last Limerick Duathlone was passing her on the bike and then having her scorch past me out of T2

Was up swimming on thurs evening and was swimming 6 mins 40 sec for the 750 which is about 4-5 mins quicker than a standard 750 so the flow is still strong but i'd say it'll be the 1100 down and 400 back swim.

Even given this i'm still going to go for:

    sub 20 swim
    1hr 5min bike
    42.30 run

so really really hoping for a sub 2.10.
2.16 was last years time so it won't be easy

Quick question regarding athy which i should of posted this morn!

The race breifing is for 10.00 with the first wave of at 10.30, does this mean that all the other waves will have to vacate the transition area after the briefing! In other words for those in Wave 5, rather than aiming to be in for 10 to catch the race brief & then set up, they will have to wait around for an hour prior to starting twiddling their thumbs & eyeing up who to draft of.........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 859 ✭✭✭911sc

The transition area is to be vacated by all participants (regardless of wave start) BEFORE the 10am briefing. No access back to T area allowed afaik.

Check out the event info pack

So hows the dehydration and sunburn?
What's with the lack of t-shirts as well? Do they not know that's the only reason we do triathlons.

anyway, my prediction was 2.35, finished in 2.36. Badly let down by the run.
How did the rest of ye do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,144 ✭✭✭Bambaata

finished in 1:00:59. Well happy but also annoyed at the run. The body hadnt recovered from last week and I cramped bad on the first 2km, so much so i was barely jogging. a few passed me in that 2km but once i started actually running i caught them again although i lost in a sprint finish for 4th, 5th & 6th! The 3 of us crossed within 2 seconds of eachother. Waiting anxiously now on all the results combined. Hopefully not too many more were faster in the later waves. It would mean my first top 10 which i never thought was possible going into it

    Olympic
    swim 25min
    cycle 1h10min
    run 52min

    Race timing
    Swim 26min
    Cycle 1h16min
    Run 48min
    T1=1min30sec T2=1min30sec
    So finished in 2h34min.

But i think there was something wrong with the timing. Four of us took part yesterday and the T1/T2 are the same (e.g. 1min30sec for me) though different for each of us. Anyway, that's no big deal.

    Beautiful day, well organised event.
So, again, thanks to all organisers & volunteers.

I hope we'll get our t-shirt at some stage and i would have liked to get a medal. My kids don't believe me that i won:)

Well done to the organisers, it my first time at triathy & I couldnt believe how many competitors there were but yet how smoothly everything went. Pity about the lack of goody bag&tshirt (i left one behind me at the swim start so was hoping I'd break even!) and I was really looking forward to a gourmet food recovery snack pack at the end but there were none either! my last negative point is that they ran out of water at the 2km run mark (on the road) during the second last wave of the sprint race. I had taken a lot of fluid on the cycle so was ok but a lot of people seemed v peeved at this&resorted to picking up half used bottles from the road. However, they DID have plenty of water at a point further along on the canal bank so I dont think anyone would have suffered too much.

All in all a brilliant day, really well run & a great atmosphere.

Yeah, the lack of water at 2k was a killer, especially on the second lap.It was the only downside, as far as I can see.
For an event that size, it was amazingly welll organised and run on time. Brilliant.

I spent a few hours during the morning session going around taking photographs at random locations. I didn't delete any apart from total duds, so maybe you might see somebody you recognise here, blurry or otherwise: http://pix.ie/andrewmccarthy/album/344167

Congrats to all who participated. I was tired just from walking around with the camera in that heat!

...I came in at 2h34 and something......beautiful weather!....first time I race in Ireland with such great weather........will remember it for a long time......water was terrible though....looked liked diarrhoea!!!!...by the way my T1 and T2 are also the same.....strange!

    ....see you next year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,144 ✭✭✭Bambaata

I raised the same T1 and T2 time on those printouts with the guy organising it and he went over and fixed it then. he had a small error in the code for the printout for the system but all times were recorded right. There was a serious queue by then though so id say a lot didnt get it after he fixed it. Great idea though. Hopefully other races get that going too.

Where did you all get your results? They arent up on the net yet.

I have one complaint which I have to make. I was in the 2nd last wave, and as I'm not the strongest of cyclists and have a hybrid bike I knew I'd be at the very end of the field come the run. I had expressed worried on the Novice Triathlete thread earlier that this would result in the race marshalls forgetting I'm still racing and not be there to direct me. During my T2 there was hundreds of other athletes packing up to go home which is fine, but when I asked the marshalls where do I go for the run they gave mde appalling directions. So much so that I ended up back at my Transition area and lost 2 minutes before one of them was able to tell me where to go. When I eventually found where to go I saw that the fence was blocking my entry to the run and I had to move it to get on to the run course. Naturally I was very very angry and completely lost the head with the race marshalls!! There was nobody standing at the entry to the run to direct me in. I was worried about this for the last few weeks and my fears were realised. I got punished for being a slow cyclist.

Anyway got through the course in 3hrs 47 mins. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done and am so happy to get through it. My transitions were very very slow but was delighted with my run which I think was in the region of 53mins or so. Unfortunately I spent the whole run on my own ha!

When will the results be put up on the website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,144 ✭✭✭Bambaata

the results were available from a PC beside the castle. You put in your race number, hit enter and printed off all your times. great feature. hadn't seen it before. sorry to hear about your trouble. i don't think they should have let anyone in until all were out on the run course. it was a fantastic evening so hanging around another 30 mins or so wouldn't have been an issue for me (and i had been there since 8am!!)

good to hear you still enjoyed it. congrats
