ive been wondering this of late, im working my first grown up job and earning pretty decent money, but i dont seem to be any real amount better off. paying for things like car tax/insurance still seems a lot, rent is still high... stuff like that. I still feel poor, just at a slightly better standard of living with more gadgets.

so what is the popular consensus? how much do you need to earn to drive a decent car, have a nice house, a girlfriend and still afford to have weekends away and save a bit for a rainy day?

Just of of interest why would someone spend €200 on a phone?

it does lots of interesting stuff. the real question is why someone would camp outside an apple store to spend SEVEN hundred.

I'd look even funnier with a €700 phone. Wtf like. €50 max on a phone or I'd just take a hand down.

If you have it all the time and use it quite often you may as well have a decent one.

In the last three years, I have purchased two phones, and with the 'pay as you go' option haven't spent close to €700.

I have it all the time and use it very often (and drop it) and twas only €35 on pay as you go. Tis very decent indeed, thank you very much.;)

Same as myself I reckon. Btw, I could actually buy a fairly decent car for 700 quid.;)

Because it was a cool phone and that's how much it costs? Coincidentally I spend about 3fiddy on my current phone. Not really a huge investment as I plan to have it for a number of years. To date I've never lost a phone to theft, negligence or damage, so it should last me for a long time.

It's all relative, it depends on what you consider a nice house / car etc. I mean, I think the S class Merc is a nice car, but can't afford it, so I don't have one.

Your mortgage/rent and other outgoings will usually dictate how much you need to earn to live comfortably. But, for the majority of people, the more money they earn, the more they spend...

Higher cost does not alway mean better or more decent.

This is a completely pointless question as the figure would be different for everyone.

    I went for more.

You have to better define comfortably. To me, it suggests a decent lifestyle: holidays, a social life, small luxuries and the ability to handle unexpected monthly expenses like the doctor or car repairs.

If you mean how much do you need to comfortably feed /clothe and house yourself: obviously you can do it for less.

It all depends on what you can do without! Since loosing my job we have cut back on everything and we live quite in good comfort but have not much. Pleanty of food, heating and light! about 400 per person on 1200 euro rent per house should do!

    +1 (fur the children like)

as long as ive got fairly decent food on the table every night, and i got loads of milk for each night, and my motehr sponsors towards my student res, i concider myself living decently.
Found that after giving up alcohol for the most part of a week, ie only go on the dosh once a week, im saving loads of money.

seriously, after 6 pints at home + taxi to town + 3 pints in the pub + buying a friend a double something or other while im hammered in the club + kebab (insert fatty food prefered here) + taxi return = €100+ for one night, which if done right, you wont remember much of.

Its ****ing expensive way to live.

depends on your outgoing's, i seem to have less money now than in college but then again i have a better car and go on more holiday's.

I think if i earned more i'd spend more so would probably end up still looking forward to pay day with the same intensity every month.1 more day by the way!!!!!!

    i take home about 450 a week.
I never really need to worry about money but then again i cant just decide to go on a holiday spur of the moment or decide im sick of my current car and want a new one.

Id be well happy with taking home an extra few hundred a month.

When I was living at home in Dundrum and in college I'd say I spend an average of fifty to seventy euro per week, and that's about what I earned.

Now that I'm living away from home I spend €300 on average per week, so technically I guess I could get by on that money.

I'd get by comfortably on about 80 a week.

Yes i save a lot of money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭Crafty-Chel

Me and my partner live comfortable on about 800 a week, 300 of which we save so i think if we had to we'd live comfortably on 500 a week, just no savings..

Because I like to have a well sorted up to date phone. My phone was around €300 but it has satnav, mp3 player, 5mp camera etc all of which people who have a cheap phone often buy separately.

On the topic of living comfortably, I can get by on around 300 a week, now I dont mean I spend 300 a week I mean over the month spending less one week more the next and most of my money goes on rent, car maintenance, nights out and petrol. But I am postgrad and would certainly not like to have to live on that sort of money after finishing, its more putting up with not being able to buy things I want until I can in the future at the moment really.

Yeah I forgot the phones did all this stuff as well. Not into the mp3 thing myself (big amps+big speakers only), or the camera pixels stuff either. Whatever your're into I suppose...

Me, I spend around 40% of my wages on beer and women. The rest I just waste.

    Mortgage 800 quid per month
    House insurance etc 200 quid
    Loans etc 350 quid
Expenses 250 per week at least.
I had to give up drink ffs..

It depends on so many factors!!

Do you have a mortgage/rent to pay?
    Are you married?
    Do you have kids?
Do you have a car to maintain?

    So the answer is..........IT DEPENDS
