Quick whey question

Sorry if this doesn't warrant a thread on it's own.

I have a tub of whey protein which I opened last Febuary but due to college I didn't have much time to go to gym from mid March onwards, so I only got halfway through the tub.

I was wondering would it be ok to use this still? It's in date until 2010 but the seal has been broken so I'm not sure either.

If it looks & smells OK, and has been stored away from moisture and not in an overly warm place it should be fine.

The dates are best before, which is different from meats etc with "use by" dates.

Dried out food keeps for ages, thats the whole reason for drying it out, to preserve it.

Thanks rubadub, it does smell ok but I remember what it smelled like when I opened it first and it's not quite as fresh now but that's to be expected I suppose.

I'll give it a try, if I wake up dead tomorrow at least I'll know what did it. :P

I have the same problem too! Except it says best before March 2009. Its Optimum Nutrition. It's been kept completely dry and away from heat. I forgot I had it and theres loads left. It looks and smells fine. Do you think I should chance it?

Yes. March 09 is nothing much. When calculating best befores they presume poor conditions, if kept on a shelf in a window in a supp store in spain at 30C all day long it will degrade exponentially faster. In a press in Irish weather it should be fine.

If you don't want to risk it I will gladly take it, feck I doing myself out of loads of freebies here ;)

Tins of beans used to never have BB dates on them, it is only a more recent occurrence, and the reasoning is mainly marketing, they do not want shops buying in bulk and storing old cans with old logos, or labels fading in the sun etc. Tinned food lasts indefinitely, with powders I presume they presume worst case scenarios where it is very humid, the damp would affect powders a lot.
