Why do you hate us?

Smokers I mean. Why do people who do not smoke hate smokers so profoundly?

Here's what I think:

1) They envy the fact we can laugh off the warnings on the boxes/
2) They hate the fact that while most of us probably started smoking because on some level we 'thought it was cool', that we still insist on smoking because of addiction or *Shockhorror* that we enjoy it.
3) They hate the littering associated with smoking, but thats just a cover for smoker-bigotry.
4) They blame us for everything that has ever gone wrong in Irish society.

Any more hyperbole we could add to that?

You've the wrong mindset. Non-smokers tend to extend their life into the 80s... Which is really kind of boring. I'd rather go at 75 tbh...

They also hate cigarette breaks we take during work which are a great way of breaking up the day especially in the summer. Good luck im going out for a fag - aah lifes simple pleasures.

Where as with smoking there is no reason for it. None. You might say 'oh it calms me down. BS,its all in the head.

I like the social side of it,'are you coming out for a smoke'. But then again I'd prefer to be warm and cancer-free,just imo.

BS nicotine has been medically proven to calm people. Also having a fag can be extremely satisfying especially after food, drink and sex. I think they are great.

YES!! Why can't people understand that some people like it? Yes, it's just an oral fixation and yes the "calming effect" is all in the head! But I enjoy it

What I hate about some smokers is the way they smoke.
Holding the cig in the air at head level and then blowing out the smoke to their side while they're talking to someone.

I find its more to do with the blatant ignorance that smokers have of the detrimental health effects to non-smokers when making them breathe in the oxygen that you've tainted with tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide.

Instead of making smoking indoors in places of work illegal, we should have made dedicated smoking rooms for smokers like they have in various airports around the world, Korea and Zurich, Switzerland for example. A large extraction fan to pipe the smoke out would keep the smoking room relatively free of the stench of cigarettes (but obviously not the chemicals, seeing as they linger for days.) keeping everyone happy - the smokers could see each other when they're sitting there rather than peering through the chemical fog in front of them, and the non-smokers could smile, happy in the knowledge that the smokers are harming no one but themselves. Well, apart from when they sit beside you and the chemicals fly off their clothes and hair and go into your lungs, but meh, I suppose we all have to make a few concessions eh?

Another reason we dislike smokers so much is because the smell that emanates from smokers when they come into a pub, club, or indeed anywhere even remotely sheltered (yes, even bus shelters!) is absolutely vile.
If smokers respected non-smokers more, then non-smokers would respect smokers more. This is coming from a guy who grew up in a household where his mother, brother, and 2 of his sisters smoked. His mother, CHAIN-SMOKING. ALL DAY. EVERY DAY. My clothes used to reek of it, so I can empathise with you smokers out there who get shunned. :P That being said though, the best thing my dear old mother ever did for me was make me smoke half a cigarette through a filter when I was 6 years old. Put me off them for life, I literally nearly collapsed with the suffocating feeling of it! Well, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but sure isn't that what AH is for!

In essence, the point I'm trying to make is a clichéd one; can't we all just get along?

The Japanese smoke like troopers but since a smoking ban of sorts came into place they've designating "smoker zones" where they have to stand (often behind class like animals) to smoke, particularly outside airports/train stations etc.

One real bug bear of mine is bus stops. It happens every single day where at a stop, it could be packed with people all standing around waiting for the bus. But one mongo will light up without even asking if it's ok, just in case people around them don't smoke, or are asthmatic etc. No shame either, even if it's raining and people can't just wander away into some fresh air.
