Post workout munchies

    Hi all,

    I've started a weights programme at lunchtime to compliment my early morning running (alternative days) and whilst I normally have a decent breakfast and then just work through until dinner around 7pm (office based all day) this new three day a week lunchtime weights regime leaves me mad hungry and I've started scoffing sandwiches, snacks etc.

    What do people recommend for post workout food? I'm sure some will say eat some fruit etc but I wonder what the alternatives are? I see some people having some kind of shake, MaxMuscle, Amplified something or other is another one. Are these good for recovery and will kill the appetite or are they just for people who want to build body mass? (I don't BTW).

    Are you saying you have nothing between breakfast and 7pm? No wonder you get hungry after a workout.

    Seriously, workout or not, you should be eating lunch (and some healthy snacks) during the day. Eating every 4 hours is generally recommended.

    You don't need shakes, you need food! Seriously. Eat something proper after gym, some simple carbs and protein.

    Shakes are supplements only, they shouldn't replace meals, they should compliment them. Even if you do take shakes, you're meant to eat a full meal afterwards anyway.

    Healthy eating should include ample amounts of protein especially if your training and especially after training.

    Protein sources from eggs, fish ,lean beef ,cottage cheese are great sources of protein and there is nothing special about protein powders that these whole foods wont give you.The only thing that protein powders give is convienence.

    I know I mentioned it already but after training is probably the most important time of the day to eat. It's as important or even more important than breakfast. Your body is primed to utilise nutrients and it handles carbs so much more effciently at this time.

    Jaysus!!

    OK I get the message. Eat proper food after training and work some lunch/snacks (proper food again) into my day.

    I do love food so it's not like I'm trying to starve myself or anything. I just have a job where it's easy to crack on all day and I personally don't like taking breaks. I find it hard to break concentration and get back into it again half an hour later.

    Will make the adjustment accordingly, thanks for the boot camp responses, much appreciated!!

    I'll use this thread instead of opening up a new one...

    For those who train in the morning, what are your post workout meals like? I always have RAM directly after training and then after that it varies quite a bit. I used to take Mass X but got a little bit sick of that after a while. I'd prefer to have some food rather than another shake as I have a couple during the day as it is.

    So for someone in an office job (access to microwave etc) what's a good meal to have an hour after training?

    Porridge with a scoop of protein or a couple of slices of wholemeal bread with say 150 gram of chicken, turkey, tuna or salmon etc ie. you will need carbs and protein after a workout and try to get it within one hour of your session

    Just what I was looking for.

    But, what if I work out late.
    Usually 8 - 9 or 9.30.

    Usually have dinner before hand.
    Should I still eat after even though its 9.30 - 10.00 pm?

    As I started this thread and feel I need to establish that I'm not a complete prat when it comes to my diet I have the following after my morning run:-

    - Juice of three freshly squeezed oranges.
    - Two boiled eggs
    - Two slices of wholegrain toast witha little butter and marmite (I know I should probably cut out the butter)
    - 1 cup of tea with two sugars. (I only have one cup of tea a day becuase I like it sweet!!)

    If I still have the munchies I'll have a couple of wheetabix with milk and a half spoon of sugar.

    Is that an acceptable brekkie? I'm sure it's far from 'ideal' but I'm hoping it's not too bad.

    I'd be in the same boat, sometimes even later! I wouldn't be a serious trainer or anything approaching, just don't want to be a complete unfit mess. All I do is a few pull ups, dips, press ups and a little bit of free weight stuff. Usually follow that with half an hour on the bike. So basically I'm asking the same question.

    Ticks all the boxes for brekkie for me. A bit high in carbs if you have the weetabix, but no biggy. I wouldn't cut out the butter. Fats should be part of your diet.

    edit: I know you're a reformed character and all....but....

    I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know!!! :D

    I promise to eat some good stuff during the day every day from now on. Even bought some of those Nature Valley crunchy granola bars to snack on instead of hitting the vending machine for when I haven't organised a lunch of some sort but I've a feeling they ain't as good as they look.

    One night a week I cook a big pot of meat and veg. Stick it into boxes and freeze. That is lunch every workday, which you can have at your desk if you want.
