I would say... do your own research....look up cars prices in uk, use the vrt calculator, and compare it against whats on sale over here..

I wouldn't be buying any car with the intention of re-selling in Ireland currently!

    This is a peach of a question.............lol

If you mean selling down the line then I would suggest diesel, post 2008 and below 2 litres. Focus 1.6TDCi comes to mind.

But your question is somewhat vague and more info would be needed to give you a meaningful answer.

I have done that for the last year. But the question is more of what might sell ?

I know you have a point . But there has to be something .

    This is a peach of a question.............lol

Thanks, It like getting an opinion poll , from people that know (i hope)

The type or value of the car dose not matter . I am trying to buy and sell one car per month . So I am looking for the forum views on the type or values of imported cars that are currently selling (if any).

    Thank's

I'm afraid the short answer to this question is that you're about a year too late.

Are you registered as a dealer with the VRO, or registered VAT, or are you just selling the car on the side of the road?

There's a great market for Range Rovers here at the minute. Especially petrol ones....

I have insider information that all ex uk Kia Rio's are going to to be hot investments in the next 6 months.

I think the overriding advice would be don't bother. However if you are hell bent on this wacky venture then the recent views of those in the know say that sub €6000 stuff is moving.

OP, If I were you, I'd invest in Chineese electric cars and sell them from your driveway - you'll make a fortune.
You'll be the Bill Gates of the green car here in Ireland.
They are going to sell like crispy wontons!

I now live North now just miles from the M1 . I did have a garage about 10 years ago in Dundalk that was registered for VRT . As for the Range Rover ,even in diesel you would want to be brave .

Lads, no more of those posts.

Either give advice or keep it to yourself.

OP, do you plan to import to sell and make profit? I think what you have to realise is that anyone who wants to buy what you buy, will be able to go over to the UK as easy as you and buy and import. This time last year, ya, maybe you could of made some money. Now? It's too late, everyone has already done it or is already at it, plus there is some great value starting to appear on the Irish market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

From looking at a few select marquees there's actually better value to be had here if you're getting a good cash price than in the UK I've found - really think you're too late, find another way to make money..

I know what you are saying about been to late . But surely if the car was available to view in Ireland it has to be an advantage .

would you not do up a little survey and go to a local shopping centre and ask there?

How much would you plan on adding onto any car? Add on travel costs and your profit margin? How much profit would you like to make, to make it worth your while going over, buying, advertising, I presume some sort of maintenance work on the car, nct etc. etc.?

I suspect your main problem would be explaing where you got the car and why you are selling it. If you come clean wouldn’t the prospective buyer just think he/she could just do it themselves and cutout your markup?

Not if you were selling the car at the same price as in the UK , as for why I selling it , I would be honest about it , to make money .

LOL... How can you sell the car for the same price as the UK, if you are after spending money importing it and all of the above mentioned? And still make a profit? Your plan doesn't make sense.

Travel , Anyone that travels to the UK to buy a car is going to incur travel expenses and possible not buy the car they went over for .

Profit , I was hoping to sell the cars at the same advantage price as that car would be in the UK , The question is what type of cars are selling .

Maintenance , 90% of UK cars have a three year warranty ,so if the car has a full service history with low milage along with a bit of the three year warrarty left ,happy days !

So wait now, let just say you want to buy car A. It's €9000 in the UK, plus €3000 vrt, a total of €12000. Add €500 travel costs and you have €12,500.

How do you plan to make profit by selling it at €12,500? Going by what you said, by selling it at what people can buy it for? What if you go over to look at a car, and it's not what you tought it was? You're loosing money then?

I should have explained . I was in the trade some years ago . So I have some contacts within UK leasing company's . I also have a 11 car transporter that is on hire to a company that takes cars home from the UK . So haulage would discounted .

Lol, could of saved alot of hassle just to say that.

So ya, bulk buy and make a profit. Any thing cheapish will sell, the likes of 02 Corolla's, Golfs etc. 05/06 Passat diesels, A4 diesels, Honda Accord diesels, etc. etc.

Can't say I do, if there are very little of them, could be a hint, lol. I'd imagine a small petrol engine would be as good a seller in a Yaris.

It seems one of the reasons why the D4D Yaris is in short suply , was the new price in Ireland , compered with the petrol version .

If say an 07 diesel Yaris was priced at the same price as a petrol , which would you go for ?

More than likely the petrol tbh.

My suggestion would be small automatic cars. Any age. Perfect for first time drivers. Do a search on carzone and you'll see how rare they are and how they command a premium price because of this rarity and obvious demand...

Automatic? For first time buyers? No way! You do realise if you pass your test in an automatic that you can only drive auto's, unless you redo the test in a manual? 99% of first time buyers go for manual.

    I am aware of that.

You do realise the OP is asking a question about cars that sell? I'm simply suggesting a niche market that I believe exists...

Any small engined diesel post 2008. Low(er) tax/VRT.

    MINI, Toyota, Ford.

The only cars that are selling at the minute are cars that are priced as bargains. Not cars that can be bought cheaper in the UK, North, or South Africa for that matter.

People have an eye for bargains - they know what represents good value to them.

As long as you buy a car, and price it for considerably less than other similar cars advertised in Ireland, you sell it.
