Im not looking for medical advice, and apologies if this has been covered before! Im just looking for nutritional advice from anyone who may suffer from an underactive thyroid. I have had the condition for a number of years now, and taking the relevent meds for it, but my problem is I just cant seem to lose weight, regardless of what I do! Any advice appreciated!

Iodine rich foods are helpfull with a slow thyroid. You can get a supplement called sea kelp that is rich in iodine also. any health shop will stock it.

iodine rich foods include sea weed / cod/ haddock. get plenty of healthy fats.

Make sure you fit in some exercise too.

To work out your calories with an underractive thyroid you might find this site helpfull

Ma haung tea will stimulate your thyroid too, but it contains ephedra ... so be careful.

You also need to look at what you are eating. High GI foods will hinder weight loss, particularly if you have a thyroid problem. However, certain foods tend to slow down thyroid, especially things like soy and raw brassica vegetables. You can still eat your broccoli and brussel sprouts but make sure you cook them first.

Are you being medicated for this issue m'lady? (love the username btw, makes everyone replying to you sound gallant :))

I ask as otherwise it's pretty impossible to lose weight. Other than that avoid any foods containing soy as it interferes with the hormones produced by the thyroid and I second the idea of supplementing with kelp tablets. Not for weightloss but general health.

Hi all.. thank you very much for all your advice. Thanks neddas, I sound ultra inportant!! I am on Eltroxin 200mg a day, that was recently increased from 100mg. I am due to get another blood test, so will see if its working. What does kelp do?

When I was about 11, my throat really swelled up from the thyroid goiter & I gained a lot of weight. My mam started giving me some iodine drops everyday & over time it worked & the goiter went down & the weight went down.
Anyone know where the drops/tincture can be gotten? I think they are more effective than the kelp tablets.

    Hi All,

May or May not be the right place to post...

I had been diagnosed with borderline underactive thyroid last year.

Doc gave me a two month prescription of Eltroxin and I was charged €75 for the bloods and the doc visit.

Two months later I returned for more bloods to see how all was, doc wanted to chat to me so I was charged €55 on this occasion and given a six month prescription but I was told to return for bloods in three months just to see if my levels were ok.

Nearly at the three month mark, rang docs office yesterday, apparently the doc wants to speak to me again and receptionist said she will only charge me €55 (no €20 extra charge for blood test). I have three months left on my prescription so I really don't know why I need to see the doctor but they must have a reason? Anyone know what the story is with this?

Now I know your health is your wealth and all that but this means I've spent €185 so far on these visits and that doesn't include the price of the meds.

Plus if you get sick in between and need antibiotics ya can add that on!

Just wondering though for anyone with an underactive thyroid... obviously you may have to return every few months to make sure all is ok but is paying out big every three months the norm ?? Why give a six month prescription and request you return in three months?

Don't know if i'm being conned tbh, haven't the money for this visit, had the €20 stashed which is what they charge for blood tests that the nurse does in the morning.

Just wondering if anyone with the same condition can tell me their experience... I know everyones different so not looking for a basis to ring my doc and give out or anything !

Theres quite a long and informative thread on the issue of "thyroid misery" in the LTI board. I'm not sure it's representative of everyones experience, a lot of people on it have had trouble getting their treatment right, but it does have some good advice on diet, supplements and talking to drs etc.
It might be useful m'lady *courtesies*

I was diagnosed with hypo six years ago. I was taking 100mg eltroxin everyday and told I would be for life.

I had my blood work back today and my thyroid is fully functioning. The damage has reversed!!
I went off my tablets a few months ago and have been working hard at my diet for several years.

I cried when I got the news!!! Just had to tell ye my GOOD news :-)
