How to keep hydrated?

What is the best way of keeping hydrated?

Or maybe the issue is water retention.

I wake up a lot quite dehydrated, the first feeling I feel every day is a dry mouth and slight headache, I then go to the tap fill up a german beer glass full of water (1 litre )and drink it at least once.

I still need more water early on in the day to feel good though, I then spend a lot of the time pissing it out, even If I still feel dehydrated, to the extent that I have to not drink for the entire morning if I am going on a bus journey for eg. possibly not even have a cereal.

I feel like i do not retain the water well enough,
    any advice here?

When I go drinking its rediculous might piss four times over first two pints, until dehydration sets in, then go home drink about 2 litres of water and wake up several times over night where depending how bad I feel I drink more

one time I counted 15 times before 11am..

anyway main thing is any ideas, does putting salt or sugar in water help?
Don't want to be doing this long term maybe?

I think you should discussed this with your GP I have ran marathons in the Sahara and never experience this. Are you drinking alot of diuretics such as caffeine? What your describing sounds out of normal range, if I was you I would be off to my GP

I don't think its caffeine related, although I have been drinking some this week for study, I usually drink none, no tea or coffee, occasionally a diet pepsi.

I went to GP earlier in the year as I though it could be diabetes,
I did a blood test and she said I was well in safe range and not to worry about it.

I always wake up thirsty, but a mouthful or water makes me feel much better. It's usually worse when I don't drink much water the previous day(I'm a fan of the oul tay) This definitely sounds like something which should be discussed with your GP.

Edit: See now you've been to your GP a second opinion may not be any harm. GP's can sometimes have a habit of getting you in and out of their office as quickly as possible, make sure they go through EVERYTHING that it could possibly be.

Do you exercise much? Take much sugar or salt in your diet? You could I guess try one energy drink a day to see if it is down to salts/electrolytes and all that jazz. G'em would probably be one to know more about that sort of thing?

I don't do much cardio (twice every three weeks play squash), but have been doing weights 3-4 days a week since january, with a one month break in the middle. (I do walk a lot maybe 2km a day)

I typically have had a high sugar diet but have been eating much better in that period with snacking on junk food almost eliminated.

Similarily my salt intake is probably better than the average student, as in I don't add salt to food, get a takeaway maybe once a fortnight and don't really do ready meals maybe once a week. Only source i can think of is in chicken fillet rolls, as they are now hard to resist for 2 euro a go in dublin.
