Another Audax Ireland ride - 8am start from Dalkey, 200km around the hills of Wicklow (evidently this Mick Byrne was a bit of a glutton for punishment). Reputedly harder (or more challenging as we like to say round these parts) than the Wicklow 200. 8am start, let Paul O'Donoghue know in advance if you're planning to do it - podluna@hotmail.com. An eminently reasonable €5 entry for your brevet card (maybe some food also - there was at the Ardattin - but don't count on that), and Cycling Ireland membership is mandatory.

I'm in - any other takers?

Do you have a route map to give us an idea of how much more challenging than the WW200 it is?

Bugger, I have no membership...I'm also at a party the night before.

No 1 day licenses so? Is it worth my while signing up for a membership this late in the year?

    Sure ye might as well.

No route sheet yet but I expect Paul will send one out some time next week - I don't imagine it's much harder than the Wicklow really, but it's not going to be a fast, flat spin like the Ardattin.

One day license is fine, I think, but maybe confirm with Paul.

    Sure it's only a tenner if you're a first-timer anyway.

Here's the route -lots o climbing involved -including ending pretty much on Killiney hill I think. Emty did it last year, as did Blorg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

    Looks like a cracking route!

If I send off the form to cycling ireland tomorrow, would it be processed in time for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

'kin 'ell. That looks a fair bit tougher than the WW200.

It also starts more than 30km from where I live which would mean about 260km and enough climbing to choke a goat. Tempting.

Anyone who is thinking of doing the Wicklow 200 should do this,it will really get you into great shape both physically and mentally,if you can get around this in decent shape then the rest is cream, hopefully there will no heavy wind(some hope),it was rather breezy last year and that took its toll,as Tiny mentioned at the end of a lot of climbing you have to climb around Killiney and Dalkey, nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭rottenhat

Just a quick bump for this one to say that there are 100km and 160km routes with later start times for those who reckon the 200km might be biting off more than they can chew.

    More details.

160 would be great but still 220 for me ... the 100 would actually make it a 160 :)

Both tempting. Must try and map the routes.

I think I will die if I do the actual 200 ... looks very very very tough.

Caroline, this is a tough route,if you stay in a group and pace yourself it will be easier,i got caught on on my own and rode the last 80 odd kms on my sweeny last year,it was also very very windy and that made it tough, lets hope for better weather next week.

And that's exactly what i want to avoid. i am not a fast climber and I would like to avoid having to count on people's good heart to wait for me at the top of each hill while they're trying to get on with their cycle :) ...

the same feeling you get when you're playing tennis with a 4 years old ...:pac:

Don,t worry i,ll be joining you on the climbs,we can both suffer together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭rottenhat

On Saturday, emty and I were talking about trying to form a group to take the ride at a sensible pace , and let the heroes try to stick with the lead group if they want. Hopefully he remembers this conversation come 8am on Sunday.

I'll be there for sure. This was the hardest thing I've ever done. Last year the weather played equal part to the hills. I got dropped from my group just before Old Wicklow Gap and suffered like a dog for the rest of the ride. The food stop in Laragh was the most welcome place I've got off a bike. Sure its great fun.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 347 ✭✭bunnygreen

Hey Wicklowrider,+1, i got dropped and missed the last feed stop, suffered badly over the gap with the wind, and then Killiney,f*** me,see you there so.

I am on for this .. it should be fun..

It would be great if we could get a group together to help each other out with the challenge's that this route pose's.You have a lot of tricky sections which need to be tackled in a "sensible" manner.Working together, sharing the front at a reasonable speed is the way to go imo.
Or we could just go hell for leather from the get go.Either way I'm in :D

If everyone still eyeing up the 200 only? Would be interested in one of the lesser routes.

I will def be doing one of the lesser units due to a bad knee. But the weather is looking good so far so need to get out for a while!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭Bikerbhoy

The ideal thing to do here as I see it is to do the 160 k course of this Mick Byrne spin this wend, couple of short spins during next week wherever possible and then the following wend Bray wheelers are running another 160 k event being the weekend prior to the Wicklow200 by that stage we should be starting to wind down in order to be in good nick for the BIG day. anyone care to start a Chaingang rolling for either or both of the above ?????

Might join you 2 if noone else want to do 160. ( not fast enough to do 200 ) and 100 from mines = 160 for me anyway :P

I'll be doing the 100. Can I just turn up on the day? I didn't see anything about registering in advance on the Sorrento site.
Anyone have any idea of the amount of people who'll be on it? Would be great to have a decent-sized bunch at least as far as the turn at Laragh. I will be unceremoniously dropped as soon as we head back towards Sally Gap anyway. I'd like to do the 160 but it would probably shatter any confidence I have for the WW200. My usual approach for the WW200 is to do feck all beforehand so that I start the day in a state of blissful forgetfulness as to how horrendous a 10 hour day in the saddle is :D

Stuck between the 160 and the 200 myself, I like Caroline's thinking.

Tonto and Claw, even the 100 sounds too wimpy for moi, bump up to 160!

If you do 160 I do it too, you are faster than me up hill, but I usually can catch up on descents. Plus now with my super EPO based inhaler, i am much better at ... most things.

    And if I do the 200? ;)

    Hey, I can stick it!

EDIT: Fine, I will do the 160 with you.

It's more the Claw you have to convince.

It's more a question of time rather than distance. Even with the 100, we'd be up to 140 or so once you take into account riding there and back.

Sure, he doesn't have a cycle computer does he? Just lie to him: 'oh no, I think we might have taken the 160 route by on purpose by accident'

He has a computer, so your cunning plan falls at the first hurdle.

Haha, yes. Remember Barrabus ranting for ages on the way back from Trim about the scumbags who nicked his computer.
