Don't need to go through ICPSA.ie jw, I have www.issfnews.com on my daily list and the ISSF TV link is right there on it.

Good stuff. I usually make a point of watching the finals. Personally I'd like to see a system like our own, where you can select a shooter to watch via their Sius Ascor targets, or even combine that with a webcam link, for the whole match. I think that would be fantastic, if a huge task to set up eighty firing points with it for the webcam links.

I'd like to have seen some of us competing there instead of watching!!;)

As would I Floydster. But between money being non-existant and clubs not running enough matches, and no EoIs being received for Munich or Milan, it didn't happen. Which is bad, because yourself and probably Richard and/or Conor could qualify under the current selection process.

To be fair, no EoI's were received because none were called for, for the aforementioned reasons, and nobody's happy about that.

But to be even more fair, from the selection process writeup there, in it's own seperate paragraph so it'd stand out a bit:
By the way, just because the NTSA wait until this point to look for EoIs is not to say that you can’t hand one in well in advance. Shooters cannot play passive roles in their own shooting after all - if there’s an international match you’re interested in, talk to your coach about it. Get a training plan in gear. Tell the NTSA you want to go to that match, even if they’ve said nothing about it yet.
I'm a long way from saying that it's all the shooter's fault; but theres a balance being missed here. I've lost track of how many people have complained that there aren't enough .22 matches being run by the NTSA this year (and last year) - but the NTSA doesn't own ranges, the clubs do. And there are a host of similar kinds of WTF cases going on as well, where shooters expect the NTSA to do something and the NTSA is expecting the shooters or the clubs to do something and so nothing at all gets done. And I'm not defending the NTSA either. What I'm saying is that everyone has a job to do and folks are going about thinking someone else is going to do their job and as a result, tonnes of stuff is falling through the net. It doesn't have to be that way.

Actually, we do have Irish shooters there: Derek Burnett just posted a 44/50, Philip Murphy 47/50 and O'Grady 48/50.

To be honest, I think the policy of the NTSA always subsidising the Irish Team may need to be temporarily suspended until the financial stuff is sorted out. Once that's done, then just send in an EoI for the match youre looking to go to and we'd go from there.
The main worry is what we do about sending a team manager or coach and who pays for them. We've sent people abroad solo before; it never ends up working well, to be honest. Performances tend to hit rock bottom when you send someone out to a major match alone because they have to worry about flights, hotels, taxis/buses, food, accomodation, entry fees/forms and paperwork and shooting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

To be honest, I think allowing competitors to fund themselves is a good idea. It's simply not good enough to not be allowing people who are clearly at a stage where they can perform at an international level to do so, just because we can't afford to send them. If they're prepared to self-fund and work within an established framework, then I don't think any reason is good enough to prevent people from advancing themselves and the sport here by participation in competition abroad.

As for paying for a team manager and such, by all means pay their way, in a minimalist fashion, but we're a voluntary body, so it would be unreasonable for anyone to expect to be remunerated for their time.

FLOYDSTER, from now on, send me any EoI you care to for any match, together with a detailed training programme leading up to the event and a recent history of your training programme, with details of the results and such and I'll pass it on and we'll see what we can do.

Men's scores are up; fairly tight today with one 599 (out of 600) and several 597s who had to have a shoot-off to decide who got the places in the final.

    From the ISSF website:
10m Air Rifle M – Rikhter brought Israel’s flag on the podium

First time finalist Rikhter of Israel, 20-year old, shot a great competition winning Gold at the 10m Air Rifle Men final of the 2009 ISSF World Cup in Munich. Silver went to Hungary’s Sidi and Bronze to China’s Zhu Qinan.

    Israel's Rikhter shot Gold
Sergey RIKHTER of Israel, 20 year-old, surprised everybody by walking into today’s 10m Air Rifle final round with an outstanding qualification score of 599 points, only one point far from the world record. The Israeli shooter had never made into an ISSF world cup final round before, and his best placement so far had been a 17th place at the last ISSF World Cup in Beijing.

Rikhter turned out to be a strong competitor during the final round. The young shooter tried to manage his two-point head start on the followers, but the Hungarian champion Peter Sidi came closer to him shot after shot. The close neck and neck finished in favour of the young Rikhter, who eventually won his first world cup gold medal with 701.7 points, and a slight margin of 2 tenths of a point on the following Sidi. “This is exciting, I did not expect to finish on the highest step of the podium: this is my fourht time in an international competition!” Rikhter said right after the final match.

104.5 points brought Silver to Peter Sidi.
Hungary’s Peter SIDI performed one of his best matches today, climbing the scoreboard thanks to great shots such as a 10.9 he fired on his fifth final-shot. “I have fired an outstanding final round, 104.5 points! Unfortunately it has not been enough to reach the Gold medal... I have been a little bit unlucky, I missed it by 2 tenths of a point!”

The Hungarian athlete overtook Belarus’ Bubnovic and Norway’s Hansen to move up in second place, and fought right to the last shot to reach Israel’s Rikhter. His efforts resulted in an extreme final of 104.5 points, so that Sidi claimed Silver with a total score of 701.5 (597+104.5) points.

Olympic Silver medallist Zhu grabbed Bronze:
Bronze went to Beijing’s Olympic Silver medallist ZHU Qinan of China, who struggled to get a spot on the podium. Starting in sixth position, he found his best shots in the second half of the match climbing up to the third place. The Chinese champion had a chance to move up in second place, but his last shot of 9.4 points pushed him in third where he eventually closed the round with a total score of 700.6 points (597+103.6 points)

“I keep on searching my best mood, after the Games. The Olympic final of Beijing dried me out, and I am still struggling with finals. Today’s match has been ok, at least the first nine competition shot were in the ten-ring” Said Zhu, who had walked into the last Games as the title-holder, and came out of Beijing’s final hall with a Silver around his neck.

Vitaly BUBNOVICH of Belarus finished in fourth place with a total score of 700.3 points. A shot in the ninth ring, an unlucky 9.4 he fired on his fourth competition shot, turned out to be a fatal mistake that pushed him out of the podium.

Women's Air Rifle results are also up. Equally tight with four 399s and several 398s in a shoot-off for the remaining finals places.

    From the ISSF website:
    10m Air Rifle W - Ukraine's Shytko claimed Gold

    20090516_AR40winner_001.jpg

The 10m Air Rifle Women event has certainly been played on the thin line of small point-tenth, as the three medallists finished on the podium divided just by 0.7 points. Daya SHYTKO of Ukraine won her first medal ever with 502.7 points, followed by the current world record holder Sonja Pfeilschifter and by the second German finalist Beate Gauss, third with 502.0 points.

    Gold to Ukraine’s Darya Shytko:
Darya SHYTKO of Ukraine, 23-year old, won the 10m Air Rifle Women event at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, ending the final round in first place with a total score of 502.7 points. Shytko qualified for the final match with a score of 399 points, shooting then 103.7 points throughout the ten final shots.

The Ukrainian shooter had never won a world cup final round before, and her best placement so far had been an eighth place gained at last year’s World Cup stage held here in Munich. Table turned in the last 12 months: Shytko had finished in eight and last place at last year’s match leaded by Sonja Pfeilschifter of Germany, and she won today’s Gold by overtaking the same Pfeilschifter at the last shot.

    Local hero Pfeilschifter in second
By shooting Gold, Ukraine’s Shytko upset the world record holder Sonja Pfeilschifter of Germany, who had won the last edition of the ISSF World Cup in Munich in 2008. Pfeilschifter (38) could not keep up with her younger rival in spite of having a clear home-court advantage, and eventually concluded the final match in second place winning Silver with 502.3 points (399+103.3).

The left-handed Pfeilschifter added today’s Silver medal to her consistent awards collection. Next to three World Championship gold medal, the 38-year old shooter has won the impressive number of 11 World Cup Stages and 3 different World Cup Finals. She had won her last ISSF Gold medal at the 2008 World Cup stage held in Milan.

Two German shooters climbed the podium: Bronze to Gauss
The German team also celebrated the Bronze medal won by Beate GAUSS, 24-year old, #22 in the current world ranking. She placed in third winning Bronze with 502.0 (399+103.0) points.

The third German finalist, the 2008 gold medallist of the world cup stage in Rio de Janeiro Barbara Lechner (26) fired a frustrating 8.7 on her fifth competition shot, landing in eighth place behind USA’s Jamie BEYERLE (seventh), and Czech’s Pavla KALNA (sixth)

The Olympic Silver medallist Lioubov GALKINA of Russia finished in fifth place with a total score of 500.9 (398+102.9) points.

Did a quick bit of graphing of results and came up with these:

    MunichWC.AR40a.png

    MunichWC.AR60a.png

    Note:
    • It's really stacking up there at the top, and
    • The inner tens match the ranks fairly well, so it seems like a fair enough tie-breaking method in practise

AR 40 with a cutoff of 398 is really spectacular. Serious, serious scores being put in.

A brief note from one of the 50m finalists (Neil Stirton):
Some good shooting today ... it looked like 2x598s and 6x597s were going to make it into the final but it turned out to be 5x597 and then 10 of us (incl myself) on 596 had a shoot off for one place.

Christian Planner of Austria was the lucky one to get through, I'd shaded one and it went exactly where I shaded it wink.gif

Jon had a target malfunction just after his 49th shot. He'd fired and within a few seconds a 50th shot appeared as 0.0.
He protested, carried on but instead of letting him shoot his final shot, they stopped him just before he fired and reset the target etc ...
Jon's final score is showing as 584 but it should be 593.

Graham did well too first his first WC - 588.

Jeez, I would have had the ol' protractor out. Look at how low Guy Staric was lying:eek: I'm sure the pointy-pencil brigade were checking:D, but the photo shows him lying incredibly flat.

50m Rifle Prone M - Starik lifted Israel atop the medal standings

Israel’s Guy Starik won Gold at the Rifle Prone competition, taking Israel’s medal count up to 2 Golds, and lifting his country atop of the intermediate medal standings. Olympic Silver medallist Emmons of USA and his teammate McPhail followed in second and third position.

    Guy Starik’s great performance
The ISSF world cup multi-medallist Guy STARIK of Israel, 44, a world record holder in this event, won the 50m Rifle Prone men event at the 2009 ISSF World Cup in all events in Munich with a total of 703. 3 points. Starik’s gold medal lifted Israel atop of the intermediate medal standings of this world cup stage, next to Russia.

The Israeli shooter had started the final round in the lead with a qualification score of 598 points, and build up his victory by firing great shots as a 10.8 fired on his second competition shot. With an extreme final of 105.3 points, Starik claimed his fourth world cup gold medal.

The 44-year old shooter is also a shooting coach, and one of his students, Sergey Rikhter, won a gold in the air rifle event two days ago. “To win a medal as a coach is more exciting, since you have no control on what’s going on, and this makes it more exciting!” Starik commented “But I have to admit that It’s nice to be back on a world cup podium. I had won my last world cup gold here in 2003. Munich’s shooting range is great, probably the best in the world…”

“My goals for the future are quite clear,” concluded Starik “I am looking forward to the 2012 Olympic Games in London”

Silver to USA’s champion Matthew Emmons
Following Starik, Silver went to the 2004 Olympic Champion of Athens, and Olympic Silver medallist of Beijing, Matthew EMMONS of the United States of America. Emmons, taking part in his first international competition this year, climbed the scoreboard shot after shot, overtaking both the Olympic champion Aivazian and his 27-year old team-mate Michael McPHAIL.

The American champion finished on the podium with a total score of 702.0 points (597+105.0) Emmons said: “Everybody welcomed me here in Munich! I have been taking some time off: Kate and me just welcome our first child, Julia… I started training again last January and I took it easy. This year I will not compete so often, - continued Emmons - I will not come to the next world cup in Milan, maybe we’ll see us at the World Cup Final.”

    USA grabbed two medals
The United States of America celebrated two medals today, as Emmons teammate, USA’s Michael McPhail grabbed Bronze with 701.0 points. The 27-year old shooter had won a Bronze medal at the previous ISSF World Cup held at the Olympic Shooting Range of Beijing.

“The ISSF world cup in Munich is my favourite event! I like this competition! I will stay here a little bit longer for a training session, and I will prepare for this year’s world cup final. – McPhail said – Next year’s World Championship? It’s in my sights. I would like to improve to get ready for the world championships and for the 2012 Games.”

    Two Champions in a shoot-off
The Final was closed by an exciting shoot-off between the two best Rifle Prone shooters of the world. Coming from a weak qualification, Beijing’s Olympic Champion Artur AIVAZIAN of Ukraine finished the match tied to the 2008 World Cup Final winner and Beijing’s Olympic Bronze medallist Worren Potent with a total of 700.8 points. The two athletes had to pass through a shoot-off, won by Potent 10.1 to 9.0 points.

The 35-year old Slovakian shooter Jozef Goci, who had won here a World Cup Final silver medal in 2000, scored a disappointing shot of 9.0 points on his sixth competition shot, dropping down in the scoreboard. He finished his final match in fourth place with 700.9 points.

Austria’s Christian PLANER, who made into the final by winning a 10-way shoot-off, finished the final in seventh place with 698.1 points, preceding the shooting veteran Vaclav BECVAR, a 51-year old three-time Olympians, who closed the match in eighth with 696.9 points. He had won his last ISSF award in 2003, at the ISSF world cup in Changwon.

Let me make sure I have this right.. with the NTSA criteria of hitting a 66% score, we'd need to be shooting at the level of the dude that came 31st out of 94, which is 577.. Ouch!?!?!?

No bigred, the (current - at some stage, we'll up it, hopefully) rule is that we want to finish in the top 66%, so the cutoff point for this match would be closer to that of this guy:
    Rk|Bib No|Name|Nat|1|2|3|4|5|6|Total|Remarks
    62|1424|RIVAS Julio|ESP|93|94|94|93|96|95|565-13x|

But, the problem is that his score was shared by the guy in rank 61, so you'd have to beat him too (the idea is to shoot a score that puts you in the top two thirds; a 565 here would only put you on the margin and it'd come down to tie-breaking, so you add a point to be sure), so it'd be 566.

But again, it's not just the score for this match, it's the average score needed to do that for the last three of these matches, ie. the last three Munich World Cups (not the last three World Cups as they're on different ranges in different climates on different target systems, etc, etc): So that's 566 for this year, 568 for 2008's Munich WC, and 569 for 2007's Munich WC - then take the average and you get 568 (it's 567.666666 but we round up) as the qualifying score for the next Munich World Cup (which is in 2011 I think).

Understood! I thought it was a point where you have beaten 66% of shooters vs being behind 66%. Not much of a difference between the scores TBH. At that level, it's like a log-scale of score v difficulty. :o

Yup, you hit the knee of that curve very quickly with the World Cups.
But, here's the thing - it's not that way for all international matches. The qualifying scores for Intershoot this year were lower - 550 in men's air pistol, for example. The idea is that people would target matches that they had a realistic chance of hitting the selection score for, rather than worrying about matches that we're just not ready for yet.

Rounding up the end of Munich...

    From the ISSF website:

10m Air Pistol M – Jin back on the podium

Beijing’s Olympic Champion JIN Jong Oh claimed gold at today’s 10m Air Pistol men event, coming back on the podium a few weeks after his successes at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon. Jin was close followed by his teammate LEE Daemyung, who secured Silver. Belarus Jury DAUHAPOLAU closed the final in third winning Bronze.

Beijing’s Olympic multimedallist JIN Jong Oh from Korea won today’s 10m Air Pistol final round at the ISSF World Cup stage in all events in Munich by shooting a total score of 689.4 (586+103.4) points. So far, the 29-year Korean champion has collected four World Cup medals out of six competitions in the 2009 shooting season.

Jin had successfully participated also in the first ISSF world cup stage of the year, held in Changwon, Korea. There, Jin shot a record score of 594 points that shattered the previous record of 593 points that had been set by Sergei Pyzhianov 20 years ago, at the 1989 ISSF World Cup Final. Next to the record, Jin pocketed a Silver medal in the 10m Air Rifle men event and a Gold in the 50m Pistol competition.

Jin’s teammate LEE Daemyung secured Silver with 686.7 points. The 20-year old Korean shooter had never won a world cup medal before, and his best achievement so far had been a Silver medal won as junior shooter at the 2006 World Championships in Zagreb. Lee qualified for today’s match tied to Jin with 586 points, and shot a final of 100.7 points defending his position in second place.

Belarus’ Jury DAUHAPOLAU went very close to the two Korean temmates, trying to grab Silver. The Belarusian shooter finished in third place only one tenth of a point behind Lee, gaining Bronze with 686.6 (584+ 102.6) points.

10m Air Pistol W – 2004 Olympic Champion Kostevich claimed Gold

2004 Olympic Champion Kostevich of Ukraine came back on an ISSF podium after missing since 3 years. The Ukrainian shooter fought right the end against China’s Tong, who placed in second eight tenths behind her.

The 2004 Olympic Champion Olena KOSTEVICH of Ukraine won today’s 10m Air Pistol women competition at the 2009 ISSF World Cup in all events in Munich. The 24-year old shooter entered the final round in the lead with 390 points, and with a final of 99.4 points she closed on the highest step of the podium with a total of 489.4 points. The Ukrainian shooter missed from the highest step of a world cup podium since the 2002 world cup stage in Sydney.

Kostevich had to duel right to the last shot against the winner of this year’s first world cup stage, the Chinese shooter Xin TONG. Tong shot today’s best final, but she could not grab the Gold medal. She had overtaken Kostevich after the ninth shot, but a frustrating last shot of 9.3 points placed her in second. She finished in second secured Silver with 488.6 (385+103.6) points.

Korea celebrated for its third medal won in pistol events here in Munich thanks to 20-year old LEE Ho Lim, who finished in third place with 487.3 (385+99.3) points, winning her second ISSF world cup medal of the season following the Silver medal she pocketed in Changwon last April.

The second Korean finalist, GIM Yun Mi, started the final in third place with a competitive qualification score of 385 points, but she struggled in the final finishing in fifth place with 484.7 points behind India’s Heena SIDHU, fourth with 485.9 points.
