Eh - check with the parents first. I certainly don't want my 8 year old getting a mobile phone and wouldn't be impressed if someone got one for them and left me having to sort out a sim card and phone credit!

Steps to getting a sim card and phone credit:

    1. walk into to a phone store
    2. "OH HAI. CAN I HAZ A SIMCARD PLZ?"
    3. insert sim into phone

I must agree with poster regarding sim free phone, 8 years old is very young to be giving a phone and its something that needs to be at the discretion of the parents and discussion with the child. Theres a lot more presents out there that are more suitable. Phones are something to give a child who already has a phone registered to them.

Chill, it was only a suggestion for what to do with a cheapo phone!
This isn't the "Let's give infants access to bad people" thread.

Any idea what model it is OP?

Erm.. a torch, radio (I think) and yeah thats really it. It's a pretty nice little phone, I bought one in the UK just to use for the week while I was over there.

I'm not saying it's not a good offer & if you need a phone, perfect!

    My point is 2 fold:
    - I think 8 is too young for a phone but others disagree. Hence why I said check with the parents.
    - When is a present not really a present - whent he person/parent has to fork out cash they may not have to get the phone up & running. I don't know much about Sim cards & if you have to pay for them but I'm pretty sure you have to pay for phone credit!! So the €19 phone will cost the parent €5/10 per week (min)....€260/520 for the year.

Lol or the phone could just be used as a way for the parents to get in contact with there child, when they are maybe at a friends house or something?

    - It's you brought the age of 8 into it.
    - The OP isn't making everyone go out and buy the phone as communion presents...it was just a suggestion!
    - Getting a SIM is one of the easiest things you can do...literally! I imagine if people can get their heads around "doing it" and having kids, they can walk into a shop and get a SIm.
    - You don't have to put credit into the phone, so it can be used to receive calls only.

Why do people on internet forums feel the need to comment on things?
Little A: IF you saw an 8 year old with a phone on the street, would you go up to the parents and tell them it's not a good idea? Not likely!

This is a Bargain Alert thread, and the OP posted a bargain.

In fairness to Little A, I think the contribution is perfectly valid to the Bargain Alerts thread in so far as a cheap sim-free phone can in the long term work out to be an 'anti-bargain' when in the hands of credit hungry kids :)

I don't think there is a need for this type of 'slating' - Keep if friendly guys!

A SIM free phone for ?19 is quite the bargain. What people do with it after that is there own problem.
Also, wrong forum for discussing if children should have phones.

Again, little A was just saying let parent decide what their kids should have at any given age. Little A was not saying a blanket statement for all kids. I.E. dont make decisions for parents that the parents should make themselves. The total opposite of what you're saying here.

    - The OP mentioned communion & the average age to make this is 8
    - I didn't say it wasn't a bargain price for the phone - I said there are follow on costs (in fact I think I did say it was a good price-if a phone is needed)
    - I didn't say 8 year olds should have a phone - I just don't mine to have one => suggested checking with parents before buying
    - It is a public forum & I'm as entitled to post as you are.

Thanks Alister - you put it better than I did!!!

I'm perfectly calm, thanks very much.

I appreciate what Little A said....I just don't think it needed to be said.

We don't need a voice of reason...we're all adults.
If you don't want your kid to have a phone, don't let them have a phone! Even if they get it as a present, just take it off them.
If the 8 year old doesn't want it to be for receiving calls only, tough. They're 8 years old, and you're the parent.

All the above is complete common sense, and doesn't need to be explained to anybody...except maybe an 8 year old! ;)

agree with Soarer, Little A's post are all nonsense....it'll be better to create your own ad/thread/topic to get the attention you need...and say all what you want...
the topic was about a sim free nokia...not about your follow on cost...if youre not interested, you can just ignore it.. if you have nothing to say....>>> sleep tight

Ah but there comes the consultation with the parents regarding what network would be best for the little chap.

Or you could change Communion to Confirmation then the problem is solved,
I have to say this would make a great deal with the tesco simcard for 2.50 with 23 euro credit ;)

sorry i was more thinking as in a godparent buying it for them i have bought it for my godson and i am sure i can stretch to a fiver every week for credit. and i was not looking for a debate on what age a child should have a phone theres no right or wrong answer to that

also the phone has no internet no video messaging and no camera so yes i think it is a safe way for kids to get used to a cheap phone it would not be the end of the world if they loose it and no chance of doing anything inappropriate with the camera as there is none.
