Anyone know what are the best upper back compound exercises? I havn't really focused on my upper back before and recently I have noticed a kind of slight nagging tension across the back of my shoulders (it eases when i stretch them back) and worry about having a bit of an imbalance going on.

I find 1 arm DB rows, cable rows and chinups the best.

Pull ups are the mot effective imo. You may not be able to do too many starting out but keep working on them i.e do as many as you can to failure and you will progress. Along with Squats, Deadlifts and Bench presses I find pull ups to be a great exercise for building strength.

Bentover barbell rows are also very good.

I can vouch for pullups. I had awful awful problems with my neck and upper back for the past couple of years. I read on here that pullups are great for strengthening the back so I start doing one set, just one set, everytime I went to the gym. Think I started by being able to do just four or five regular ones and now i've built up to doing twelve wide arm pullups. It's the first exercise I do now and it has really saved me by taking pressure of my neck. I work in IT and sit at a desk all day so it's a life saver really.

Definitely recommend pullups as well, and not just getting your chin to the bar, but try and touch your chest off it.

If you're solely looking at it from a rehab/prehab perspective then you'd be hard pressed to beat inverted rows. Make sure you're getting your chest all the way to the bar.
