few Q's on Carlow town

Was wondering if anyone could provide me with some information on Carlow town.

I'm finishing college soon and there is a good graduate opportunity in Carlow but I'm from Meath so I would have to move to Carlow during the week and rent somewhere.

I have looked at properties and around €120 - €140 seems to be the going rate for a weeks rent for a one bedroom apartment in Carlow town.

This seems ok to me but is there a better option close to Carlow town that would be a short commute but would have cheaper renting options that I should look into?

Also whats the town like for general expenses? Is it a cheap or dear place to live?

What about things to do? Cinema? Gym?

Does the college being there mean some noisy nights during the week?

Would it be an easy enough going place to get to know new people?

first of all congrats on the opportunity.

for the one bed that seems about right ... how do you mean by the commute thing , if your already renting in carlow town?

Carlow is about the same as everywhere for living really, we have superquinn, supervalu, tesco , dunnes, aldi x2 and Lidl in Carlow. shopping about as always is the key.

pubs etc vary in price theres many to choose from though. a pint of guinness varies from 4 to 4.50, depending where u drink.

there are many gyms in carlow, i don't use one so cant advise on them. there will be a new cinema in carlow later in the year, the one we have now has 3 screens. theres loads to do in carlow and a few of us have met up through carlow boards meets, it's a good way to meet people defo.

noisey nights if your living in the student areas, or bang in the town centre, but overall carlow is a quiet town, and friendly also,

i'd recommend living here to anyone.

edit, don't know if yor in college in DKIT i was and am from dundalk, but moved here in 2001 and never left the place.

patrick never left cos we dont let him....lol

but if you link us to house/apts your looking at and we can tell you if it quiet or a student area, etc. we are getting a new cinema btw.

tonnes of gyms, seven oaks and talbot hotels have "leisure centre" gyms, so they have swimming pools. we also have the "dome" for bowling/arcade etc/

The town is like every other provencial town, and nowhere near as expensive as the cities.

The cinema is a bit of a dump but a new one will be built soon. There are a few gyms, including a pretty well equiped one in the college. Theres also a bowling alley, lots of bars, a few decent clubs and what you might normally find in any other large town.

Not sure what you mean about 'noisy' nights, but the main student night tends to be Thursday.

Carlow people are alright, bit distant but a friendly lot once you get to know them. Although in a college full of students from all over the country Im sure you wont need to befriend the locals :)

    Thanks for the quick replies.

@patrickc, by commute I mean is there a better town near to Carlow town itself that would have cheaper rental but be close enough ?

Also yes I'm just finishing up in DKIT doing software development but I live out in the Meath countryside

@aynon, I was looking at apartement but the seem to go quick as the one that interested me on daft is gone already, I was basically looking at any decent sized apartment on daft that was under €500 a month.

@EnigmasWhisper, I will be working in Carlow not going to the college :D so by noisy nights I mean like here in Dundalk a thursday night is very very noisy in the town and particular estates so was wondering about estates to stay away from to avoid this.

I'm gonna guess that the grad position is in either Unum or Merch, Sharpe and Dohme?

As for the commuter towns question, I don't think the slight difference in rent would be worth living outside the town tbh. Your options would be Tullow, Rathvilly, Arles, Castledermot, Athy, Ballon, that's all I can think of right now.... But, I don't know how easy it would be to get an appartment in those places. Houses would be more common. Maybe 2 bed but more likely 3 bed.

    Something like this
    http://www.daft.ie/searchrental.daft?search=Search+%BB&s[cc_id]=c10&s[mnp]=&s[mxp]=500&s[bd_no]=&s[pt_id]=2&s[move_in_date]=0&s[lease]=&s[furn]=0&s[search_type]=rental&s[transport]=&s[advanced]=&s[price_per_room]=&s[refreshmap]=1&limit=10&id=686313

    Or this:

Yep Shay its in Unum, a guy from Dkit who graduated last year and ended up working with them was in talking about them and after some more research it seems like a good opportunity and one I would definitely consider moving for.

An apartment would ideally be best, I know it limits my options but I wont be able to afford more than €500 a month and I'd rather not live in a house with other people.

I have looked at house sharing options and there seems to be a lot available for "professional" people but if I'm working I'd like to have a place to myself to relax in the evenings

you see a lot of apartments advertised in shop windows i.e. By ppl that own them.

Ill take a look next time im in town.
They are also a couple of rental agencies in carlow, their properties may not be on daft.

Have to say the student nights out are usually monday, wednesday & thursday. If your looking for places in quiet areas its easy enough. Not completely sure of the students areas myself yet.

I know you were saying you would prefer an apt but if you get stuck, i have seen houses in the 500-600 region. As for the sharing you might get lucky. Currently i share with 2 others, one is only here for 2 hours in the eve and the other doesnt come back till 12 at night.

As for gyms I use the talbot hotel, okay for amount of equipment & has a 20m pool also.

Yeh could get lucky and get a good shared house will have to check it out and see

I have been in contact with unum and submitted my CV so hopefully I get called for an interview and maybe get to check out the town the same day.

Any recommendations on rental/property agents to visit in the town for info on renting?

what about this house too? www.daft.ie/2691771

I'd love to live there, pushes the budget a bit but its lovely, its in a spot called willow parks, good or bad spot?

oh and i forgot to ask, what are the broadband options in Carlow?

It wouldn't be known as one of the best areas in Carlow to live in.

rather than specifying areas, was done before if you search it'd be better for you to ask , not really fair to specify areas when people live in them

we can advise but as i said better not just specify them , thanks super

Anyone know anything about the apartments in Shamrock Plaza? Is it a nice area (Tullow St I think?)?

I've seen two on daft and they look great but severely overpriced at 1300 / month for a 2 bed apartment.

Apologies for hijacking but I don't think it merits a thread of it's own.

    Thanks.

youd certainley get cheaper than that, they are on barrack street, or technically it's the dublin road

I've been in those appartments once or twice a few years back. They were nice. I live in Carlow and work in Tullow. I leave at 8:40 and I'm always in work before 9 so its not a long drive at all.

if you want to avoid noisy students, stay away from all the estates surrounding the college area as they tend to be rented out the students...(may be hard to tell nearer summer months as they will be mostly gone until september). very few students at the other side of town
