    hey,

so my plan is to get big back into fitness and training.
I used to be big into it so i have the basic concepts etc, except in the past it was all sports aimed, i was on an SCT for rugy so had alot of weights with sprinting, then changed to rowing and team won all irelands we were that good but again that was sports driven.

now i havent trained since i quit rowing two years ago.
it was possibly the most intensive training in my life, im not looking for that, im looking to just get fit again!

im about 14 stone or so i always do the likes of push up and sit ups so i have maintained my general physique look, however while rowing i was a stone or two heavier, same with rugby. im 21, 6 foot tall, possibly 6ft 1(just under as i remember but when doing the round up lark it hits 6ft 1)

so i know my muscle mass is down or whatever.

So basically for the summer i lost my job and cant get one again it would seem, but im a student so thats cool.
im joining a gym in about 2 weeks(when i finish my exams)

any advice people have to up my general fitness?
with a preferance on running over heavy weights? or bikes or whatever.
im thinking of going back to rugby next year in university, however i just want to up my general fitness for summer.

i just dont know how to apply what i know to a general fitness rather then a specialised!

    Hi mate.

I only started Weight lifting myself with alot off help of the people here. I really enjoy it

But i have been running for a while now and if you want just fitness then you cant beat going for 2-3 5k jogs/Sprints a week. . And do some weights as well.

I will be honest and say since i started the weight lifting i have let my running slip. Just because i enjoy lifting so much and running was always a :rolleyes:zzzzzz

But hold on a bit, One of the others will be able to help you more on the lifting

I'd say think about what you like mate. And go for that! Me when I started training I did both weights and cardio and lots of stretching/flexibility exercises. It was a very well rounded combination that stood me in good stead I feel.

Maybe keep it basic to start with - bit of cycling, weights to ease yerself back into things.

    thanks for replies.
my main problem is i enjoy weights, but im quite big, in fact im very light for my chest/leg size etc,

i dont really want to bulk into some kind of titan and thats kind of the way i am going almost.

even while doing rowing which is basically just intense squats with back work, very little shoulders or arms i got insanely wider.

my main prob with the jobs is my attention span, i get bored, so i concentrate on how much running sucks, then i just stop.

i know thats all it is, as when i was rowing i done multiple 10k runs a week after rowing training, think we were training twice a day at one point and would never stop. im very competitive i was fine once training with others to push me.

however i have noticed that on the bikes and rowing machines etc i am much happier to go for long periods.

what would be the best type of thing to do?

also calorie wise what should i be on? when rowing and rugby i was easily hitting 4-5k a day no bother. including about 2-3 litres of milk in the day and alot of tuna, peanut butter and chicken etc... i dont need advice on % proteins etc required just what type of calorie intake required? at moment im on a bit of an "eat whatever you want" diet, and im steadily losing weight all year, leveled out recently...

my short term goals are to get my stamina in running back up, and tone up. then in august hit it back hard to real rugby training. but until then i want a base to make that jump off.

You can do high rep weights to build muscle Endurance 16-20 Reps and get stronge but not bulk.

Join the club mate. Get your self a nice MP3 player stick some death metal on it and go for a run. everytime ( about every 5 mins) you start thinking this is sh!t just remind yourself what your goals are. The trick i have learned is try to switch off. Just think of nothing and then BANG next thing you know your run is over.

I would say the best for you is whatever one your happy doing and are going to stick with. The thing about bikes is, if you want that hard training session on a bike you need to stand up and sprint up hills. Take a spin class. I did one and loved it. never went back tho lol It wiped me more then a 12k run with weights on my back.

For someone who dosen't want to bulk. your eatting alot and drinking alot of milk.

For bulking, from what i have been reading is about 3.5/4k cals a day depending on the person.

But wait for one of the others to help you with that.

I wish i was you lol. EVERYTHING i eat gose to my hips.

I play rugby myself. You don't really need to be able to run for long. Just be able to keep short sprints up for 80mins. Depending on where you play. if your a forward then you will only be doing 1-40 yard sprints at any giving time. but if your a back then you will be doing 1-101 yard sprints all game.

Work on your sprint work. You do be that fecked while doing and after to even think about how much they suck. get a rugby/GAA pitch and sprint up. then jog/walk back at a good pace keping the hearth up. then sprint again do this about 10-16 times to start and build it up to 30. thats just 3k

it will help your game alot. getting to the ball first saves alot of Messing on the ground :D

i think i mustnt of been clear on that, that is the amount i used to eat, not anymore! :pac:

i was just curious as to whats a nice stamina building calorie intake without excessive size gain(i like my current t-shirts fitting me :D and to poor to buy more)

the mp3 player might be a bit of help when running actually, btu let me ask you this, when i run the fecking earphones keep falling out of my ears, how do i prevent this?

In my opinion if you want to get "fit" you should start jogging / cycling / swimming. Once you have a reasonable level of cardio fitness you can do more intensive stuff.

If your aim is to be "fit", not "strong", there is little point killing yourself in the gym each day with heavy weights.
