The should-I-buy thread

Well, there's a thread for people to show off their purchases.
But what about a thread for people to display things they've seen but aren't fully convinced about?

This might be due to price, the product being a "fad" or maybe because you're not sure how to wear it, or what to wear it with...

    I'll start;

    http://www.newlook.co.uk/1662889/166288949/ProductDetails.aspx

I tried on this skirt the other day. I like it, it's summery, it's got a cute floral print but the colours aren't TOO out there ... it's 30 euro, plus 20% student discount ... but I'm still not convinced :/
Anyone seen any skirt like it, that's *nicer*?

*Thinks this thread is a good idea, and hopes it survives.
**Is also a lad however and therefore hasn't a clue about the threads initial 'should I?' item.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 253 ✭✭Special K

It's cute yeah, and you're right, it's not too out there but the colours are nice. You could wear a top of any colour that's in the skirt, I've seen a nice mustardy/yellow one before with kinda bat wings. Or you could go for a simple red top and matching red shoes!! :)

Also thinks this thread is a great idea! might stop be from buying straight away the whole time & then regretting it!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 84 ✭✭LeggyBrunette

I really love that skirt. I may have to buy it.

This thread is a very good idea however as I have no self-control anything you say to me in here will make no difference - I will still buy. :(

I saw that skirt myself yesterday and thought it was luvverly! The only thing stopping me buying it is total lack of funds.. :(

I'm having a bit of a fashion dilema. I REALLY want these shorts but I'm torn over whether they'll suit me. I'm 5 ft nothing, in between a size 10 and a twelve. My legs aren't particularly toned but they're not jiggly either. The thing I'm worried about is that my legs are especially short, even in relation to the rest of me so I don't want to look stumpy. They look great on the model but I'm nothing like her! What do you think?

Also, if I were to buy them and don't like them will asos take them back no probs?

Thanks for your advice - good plan :) I have tonnnns of simple tops, keep stocking up! So I might be able to buy the skirt, on the basis that it'll suit other clothes in my wardrobe :D

They're cute shorts! Because of your height, they might *possibly* make you look younger (kids wearing dungarees in the 90's etc!) ... but you could easily dress them up with a pair of heels! Heels would also elongate your legs and make them look more toned!

As far as I know, ASOS are pretty good with returns! There should be information on their website about it?

If you're not sure about them, maybe try to find a similar pair on the high street and try them on to see if they suit, before purchasing them online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

Oh I hadn't even thought of the dungaree thing! I'm kinda petit all round so I could probably pull that aspect off. The main thing I'm worried about is my size. Am I fooling myself in thinking that it's not just super skinny models who can pull them off?

If your petite and have thin legs they will be gorgeous on you! If you have chunky legs they won't look so great, i cant do shorts for this reason! :(

They're not chunky... but they wouldn't be skinny skinny either. I'm torn!

What do ladies think of skinny jeans on guys? Saw a really nice pair in topman today, just wondering, what would you wear with them? Slim fitting t-shirt and converse? I'm quite a slim guy. Cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

Go for it. As long as they're not painted on to you they'll look good. Get one of those baseball t-shirts they have there too at the moment. The white ones with red/green/black sleeves. That'd look goooooooood.

That first skirt is very cute! With a plain tank in any of the colours in the skirt. Might have to pop into NL now lol.

    Nice dress :)

Metallics and neutrals are a massive trend right now, you should should have no problem trying to accessorise it!

My thinking would be skin-coloured or black tights (the black tights would have a slimming effect on your legs, so you might feel more comfortable!)

As for shoes and accessories, think maybe golds and coppers? Might look very striking!

ASOS advertised a cute pair of pink pumps with the dress, so they might be nice, for a casual day-time look?

Skinny jeans can look nice on guys, I think! Just make sure they're not *too* tight :P

T-shirt sounds good, it could even be a loose one, to contrast with the drain-pipe effect of the jeans!

I wouldn't recommend wearing them with those lumberjack-style shirts that are around - every guy seems to be wearing those, it all looks a bit... slave-to-fashion to me!

Maybe try a long-sleeve shirt instead, one of those cotton ones, with the slight v-neck and buttons? River Island have tons of them!

They're not chunky... but they wouldn't be skinny skinny either. I'm torn!

Then they sound like good legs :P

Wear them with black tights and killer heels, to give you more confidence! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 207 ✭✭aloevera

thanks everyone! im gonna get it in pink and navy !!

black tights with navy = no no!!

looks good with the open toes, but with tights ill have to get stilettos or something.

men with skinny jeans - op i must say i dislike skinny jeans on men personally. i like men with more of a rugged look...

Something like this maybe? Although I'd like to get black jeans and would like a bit of colour.

And then just a pair of Converse. Wouldn't be a fan of baggy clothing in general. I'm quite slender so tend to look like i'm wearing a tent in anything baggy :D

Kersmash, I like that jumper. Will be cool with skinny jeans.

I like, and want this dress. But its yellow. I think it would look great with killer red heels, or gold wedges with a wooden heel?

EXACTLY what I was talking about - that's a nice top, get that! :D

Try to make sure you don't wear anything too distressed looking - You might end up looking like a Pete Doherty knock-off! :pac:

I love that dress! The colour is really summery! :) Red heels would look very striking, definitely! And you could match it with red lips and then simple eye-make-up!

Wedges would also look great, for a summer feel! I love the gold bracelets the model's wearing too!

I would definitely say gold wedges with a wooden heel!! The red could look brilliant too but I like the sound of the gold wedges!! And i love gold with yellow its really nice!!
Don't be afraid to wear yellow, i love it especially on brunettes its very flattering! :)

The delivery charge depends on weight or what you've ordered or something. Delivery is usually pretty quick. I get my packages within 3 days usually.

Cute dress..prefer it in the black though. Deffo black opaque tights and the platformmy heeled shoes that are out at the mo would look great.

thanks! i got it in the navy, so i dunno what color to wear with it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭labradoodlelady

I think you'd get away with black opaques maybe?? Try M&S for tights - they had a really cool range of diff colours/styles the last time I was in.

If you don't like your thighs def wear with heels. Platforms would be lovely, you might get away with a shoe boot too.

I got this dress in River Island I LOVE IT. Kinda same style and lenght but def need the black tights and as anniehoo said black platformy heels. I can't get away with flat shoes with it cos theres so much leg showing!!!

R.I. site doesn't seem to link properly but it's dresses>going out dresses>page 11>first dress = Blue Bow front jersey dress

Thank you I love the dress!!

Try it on with black and see if it looks weird. Actually I'm wearing black tights with a brown dress today

Marks and sparks though do have coloured tights, brown tights and navy tights I think so check it out! They have some funky kinda lacy patterned ones sometimes as well but not sure if that will go or not.

    Cool cool enjoy your shopping!!

If The Hills' ladies can do it, so can we ;)

Ok, being a student, I *obviously* don't have the money to buy it, as it's almost 2,000 euro!
But I was wondering how many people here would consider a bag like that to be worth the money you pay?

I've been considering saving up for it, but I'm not sure...:(

Are fakes just as good, or is it worth the investment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

You can get very good handbags in Turkey, 'inspired' by the real thing. I would spend the money on a week long holiday to Kusadasi and then buy bags there. I was convinced that the bags I get there had some real parts, etc, there was no way they could have made their own metal parts that were that similar.

Friend of mine recently came into some cash, bought one for €1700 in BT's recently. I'm jealous. But I could never justfiy that for a bag.

Bought myself a beautiful, ridiculously expensive handbag when I first started working. Never regretted it. Still wear it all the time and always smile when I see it. I think if you can justify it to yourself and feel you earned it why not.

I personally think its worth it, its an investment as it doesnt date. My mum has a chanel handbag and its quite similar to the one in the picture, but is a bit different- it was bought in the states and ive never seen in here which is nice. It was about 2000, and i think if you keep it well it lasts a life time.

I have a few bags, nothing at the 2000 mark though, have 2 Fendis, a LV, Marc Jacobs and theyve all kept perfectly. I broke the strap on my Fendi and brought it in and they gave it back brand new so the aftercare services are good too. One bag that didnt last was a canvas Chanel one that was a light colour and got destroyed.

All in all, go for it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭labradoodlelady

    Hey pikachu

I'm going to say don't do it!!!! I know its an investment and it'll last for a life time but when you're saying your a student and you have to save up for it then IMO no way.

When I finished college I was obsessed with shoes and I wanted to get a pair of Jimmy Choo sandals. Being broke at the time I had to scrimp and save for them, think they were about €400. Biggest waste of money. Was afraid of ruining them so I only wore them twice. They sat in the wardrobe for 2 years until I finally decided to sell them on Ebay and got less than €100 for em.

That was a few years ago when we were throwing money everywhere. I'l dance around the R word but you do need to be careful these days!!

TBH I'm not a Chanel fan anyway but I definitely couldn't justify €2,000 on a handbag.

The only bit of advice I can give is wait until your on a proper job and on good money and decide then if you want to still buy it.

Has anyone seen the sequin mini skirts in Penney's recently. I know sequin mini may sound a bit thrashy but I think they're quite nice. a bit similar to this one except its pink, purple and black, i don't do tights so it would be bare legs. Trampy???
