    I have fond memories of 2.4.17 and 2.6.10 was a favourite also. :p

    OP, what you've listed on the poll are distributions not OS versions. You should change the thread title.

    Thanks to every one, much appreciated:D, will do another poll based on BSD's in a week or so.

    I went with Debian because Ubuntu is based on it, as is the distro on the EEE PC, and many others.

    Now, this is a loaded question and really depends on what you need / want from an OS.

    For someone who wants to understand everything - how to recompile kernels, boot strap your system, pretty much do everything from scratch the obviously Gentoo is the best option.

    For someone who actually has a job and a life (:p) and needs it to work out of the box, then the alternatives are the Debian based distros.

    There are lots of things to consider - The Installer, Package Management, and so on.

    It's hard to say X is best without using each distro and rating them.

    My distro history is extensive, and rarely use the out of the box config on any distro I install. I still say Ubuntu is miles ahead of any other distro when it comes to ease of use.

    It's pretty rude to put up a poll, ask people to take the trouble to vote to help you out, and then hide the results IMHO. Is it top secret or something? :mad:

    I picked Debian for exactly the same reason.

    Bushy, you've hit the nail on the head mate thanks:),
    I am trying to do a poll in "Secrecy" so it doesn't influence Linux Distribution users to gear towards just one type of Linux Distribution, and if people are patient and vote they would be more interested to know and see how their favorite/best(in their own point of view) Linux Distribution has done and in the end we will all be ":D"

    Ps.if you wouldn't mind getting Linux Distribution users you know to vote on this poll would be much appreciated.:D

    Thanks in Advance:D

    I think you went about this poll all the wrong way. You should of stated what you were trying to do before you pissed off everyone.

    Also do you really think "Linux Distribution users" are so sheepish as to all vote for the same distro?

    You're missing my favourite distro Archlinux.

    Might be a good idea to include pictures too ? http://tinyurl.com/qjrw3l

    What are you trying to infer by posting those pictures? Why don't you just say what you mean?
    Your right, I shouldn't of said "everyone", I should of said "me".

    Even though you don't it, your sub-conscious mind has alot to play in when deciding what to vote for e.g. CentOS 60%, Gentoo 25% and Freespire15%, your sub-conscious mind is going to vote for the one with more votes, that was another reason why the poll is hidden until the

    Actually you can see the results before you vote(:p)go onto a poll that is still open and not hidden there is a tab "View poll results" on the bottom right hand corner of the poll questions.:D
    [-0-] wrote: »

    I don't think there is an option to make it public once its made hidden, if you know of a way let me know.The only thing im worrying about is when the poll is finished:rolleyes: that the results will be still hidden:( hopefully not:D

    I won't vote on this poll because I feel there is no single 'best' version. It all depends on what you want to do.
    • For a beginner - Ubuntu;
    • For a HTPC, Mythbuntu;
    • For a media laptop, Mint (although I dislike Mint personally);
    • For a business user, Fedora or Suse;
    • For Kids, Qimo;
    • For total control freaks, BSD, Gentoo or Slackware;
    • For a proxy server, ClarkConnect;
    • For a low-spec pc, Puppy or DSL;
    • For..... I think I've made my point here.

    These are all just examples - others may differ as to the best for the purposes I mentioned. That's the beauty of Linux - choices abound and what's best for one purpose is worst for another. And even then 'best' is relative.

    I like ubuntu, simple to use when you're starting out and once you're comfortable you can customise away. I've got Jaunty desktop on my media server, jaunty server (32bit) on my download box and cruncheee on my eee.

    I believe Debian and FreeBSD are my two best.
    Debian because of the consistancy of releases and stability.

    FreeBSD becasue they adhere strongly to Unix principles, and in ways
    have far better documentation than alot of linux distros.

    These two feel very solid to me in comparison to something like Arch(no offence).
    Onto documentation gripes. I noticed the explanation of the -F flag under man ls in Linux:
    -F --classify
      append indicator (one of */=>@|) to entries

    Whereas in FreeBSD man pages:
    -F Display a slash (`/') immediately after each pathname that is a directory,
        an asterick (`*') after each that is an executable, an at sign (`@') after
        each symbolic link, an equals sign (`=') after each socket, a percent sign
        after whiteout, and a vertical bar (`|') after each that is a FIFO.

    Your right, I think Ubuntu is very user friendly, especially when i'm probably the biggest noob you've ever come across:D, also its nice to know though that there is people on here that if i ever get stuck i can ask for help,which will probably be soon:rolleyes: LMAO:D

    I'm just wondering, but are the netbooks e.g. EEE pc's, a good system for using Linux Distro's?

    He's recommending crunchbang linux - it's another Xubuntu clone. I use the netbook version of it on my Acer - it is excellent.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 90 ✭✭NanoLion3

    cool,do you have an Acer Aspire one Netbook?
    And why are Netbooks so popular with Linux Distro users?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

    Did I say Acer? I meant Asus. I've the 4G model of the Asus Eee.

    I don't think netbooks are more popular with Linux users than with Windows users - they're just popular overall. The fact that a lot of them come with some distro preinstalled helps of course.

    The Asus distro is pants tho - total pants. I wiped it pretty smartish and put on Ubuntu-eee which was better but slow. Then I discovered #! and it is excellent. Minimal desktop, much faster and has all media codecs preinstalled (not that it's hard to install them anyway).

    By any chance do you know the website for dell laptops, the one where they sell laptops really cheap because of scratchs etc etc? I had it months ago but forgot what the link was called:(, Would be kinda cool if you by any chance happen to know it:D
