    hi all,
just looking for advice on a weight issue a friend of mine (male) has, hes 5"10 approx and is only 9 stone and looks too thin!
hes trying to put on weight but to no avail :( any advice on exercise that might help would be great,
also, not looking for medical advice but isn't there protein shakes or something that can help?

Unless there is an underlying medical issue it's as simple as eating more, honestly.

I weighed around 9 stone for ages, and was weight lifting on and off for a long time trying to put on weight. But when I recently started eating a lot more I slowly but surely started to put on weight.

As far as exercises the best are the one that work the most muscles at once:

    Squat
    Deadlift
    Press
    Bench Press

Those four main lifts, and eating lots will help.

A lot of skinny people simply do not really enjoy eating. Calorie dense foods can help. Natural peanut butter on wholemeal bread packs a lot of calories, esp. washed down with whole milk.

100g of nuts and 1 litre of whole milk per day will add and easy ~1200kcal to a diet.

Simply eating more doesn't really help that much.

I'm 6ft 3 and only 10 and a bit stone and have been 10 stone for 2 years.

I eat like a horse, more than most heavier friends, yet i gain no weight from it.

Tried using weights but it had little or no effect, more than likely because of me doing them wrong.
But i just stick to push ups, only has little effect though.

So basically there's nothing simple and easy that'll work for him to gain weight.

It will be a long process if any.

If you weren't gaining the weight then you weren't eating enough, the premise behind it is simple, putting it into effect is hard.

You also were doing weights wrong by your own admission and only stick to push ups? So, er, yeah.

Do you know your daily calorie intake? if not you really cannot know if you are eating enough for your size, age, height etc.

^^ This is real easy to do for anyone wanting to gain weight. A large mug is about 350ml so 3 mugs a day. Dunnes sell 100g bags of nuts for €1.09 and they've been selling them 3 for the price of 2.

If someone is 9 stone and adds 1200 cals a day to their diet they're bound to gain weight. The main thing is to be consistent. It's easy to stuff yourself for a few days and then step on the scales and say "I tried eating more and I still didn't gain weight!" and then go back to your old eating habits.

    Om nom nom :pac:

I would echo would everyone has said here. I am just over 6ft in height. Last Septmeber/October I was 10.5 stone with a bodyfat level of 4/5% as a result of continous cardio training resulting in a clorories deficit nearly every day. I was hard trying to balance the calories in with what was being burned off from the training. I have since put a stop to the cardio and focussed on building my strength back up and putting on muscle and weight. I am now 12 stone with a bodyfat level of around 8%. This weight and muscle gain has been a result of 4 days heavy compund woeight training in the gym per week, and 2 days of light cardio (cyling into work) and a s**t load of food (steak, lean meats, eggs, wholemeal pasta, rice, bread and milk etc). It takes time and effort. There is no shortcut to it. You need to train hard eat loads and rest well and you will see the gains. Being skinny is very unattractive. I am to bulk to 13 stone and then cut a little more. Bulkiing is fun actually. You don't need to worry too much about what you eat. Although I eat clean 85% of the time i would not feel guilty having the odd treat. :D

Oh i'm not here to try and find out how to gain weight.

Really my point was just to say it'll take plenty of time regardless of what way the OP's friend is going choose :)
