Anyway, is it possible to register on the day as previous years?

Due to an injury I got this week it looks like I will have to pull out of the Duathlon on Wednesday. I will check with the organisers to see if my entry can transferred.

From the website it looks liek the on-line entry is closed but I would say you can still enter on the night but I could be wrong as it looks like there are over 260 people registered for wednesday where last year each race had less the 200 participants.

I will let you know what the race organisers say about transferring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 721 ✭✭✭Highway_To_Hell

Just sent a mail to the 2009duathlon@gmail.com address asking about transfers and I recieved an automated reply with soem info and it states that there will be limited entry on the night (about 50 ) So if I cannot transfer my entry to you, you will need to get there eary and queue.

I plan on being there at 6pm and have a chat with organisers.
I'll be happy to get your entry if organisation allows and i can't register on the day. Thanks a lof for your offer.
I have PMed you my contact details. Cheers

I have an entry going as well if someone wants it...... Can't make it due to work :(
If we get clarity on the transfer side of things - its up for grabs

Anybody posters racing tomorrow? I'm expecting a PB - will be in a hurry to catch the second half of the Chelsea-Barca game! Hopefully the wind dies down before then......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

I'm doing it. No idea how I'll do, haven't been cycling much but I did go down to the park earlier today to go around the race loop a couple of times. Seriously windy on the exposed parts. I'm not really used to the clipless pedals yet so the main point of interest for me will be the first transition and attempting to get clipped in and start cleanly. Can't see my time being something I'll have trouble beating in the later races.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,131 ✭✭✭Bambaata

Think i'm doing it also. What wind would people think is too much for an zipp 808 rear? Its supposed to get windier tomorrow! Or am i wrong totally and shouldn't worry about such winds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 859 ✭✭✭911sc

Don't worry about the wind , it always blows from behind, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

Yes and all the slopes are downhill.

I used an 808 rear in the Joey hannon on sunday. Was really windy on the bike section and i didnt have any problems so im sure you would be fine using it in the duathlon tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,131 ✭✭✭Bambaata

Now all i need are some fit and able legs! Thanks wellbos. I only got a tri bike with the zipps recently and i havent yet encountered strong winds so it'll be a first! The weather really isnt looking good for it unfortunately!

My coach has always told me, unless its a gael force wind, use your disc.
If it is a gael force wind - use deep section wheels.

Enjoy this tonight lads - unfortunately have to catch a flight but am very jealous I can't partake

May as well throw this out there aswell -

Ill be using a Planet X 101mm on the back...I reckon ill be hesitant to use my 82mm on the front, but will decide this evening after a recce lap...I would say il will more than likely have my training wheel on the front.

Good evening's racing today. Great turnout considering the weather. Wind was strong and it started to drizzle just as things got underway. It made for a nervous cycle course and i was glad to see no falls. I heard of one or two but i think they were ok. Unfortunately i took the corners too conservatively and thus lost time but with 3 races in the coming 4 weeks i didnt want to take any risks.

The run off the bike didnt go well for me. I didn't feel too bad but 2 guys caught and passed me and i just couldn't keep chase. Passed loads on the cycle though and didnt get passed by anyone.

Finished in about 41:10 but thats yet to be confirmed. Hoping i beat first female which was my aim. They started 5 mins later so i wont know until the resukts come out.

Good fun. Shame the roads got a bit wet but it could have got a lot worse. I just got home when a downpour started. I'm happy enough with 46 minutes-ish. Definitely room to improve although each bike lap went by nearly 2 minutes faster than on my recce yesterday. Net gain of a few places on the second run but I was passed by three just after the final corner. I'm assuming the announced distances of 2x2700m run and 13km bike include a slight exaggeration?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭hawkwing

Went up to watch this tonight in January like weather-fair play to all who took part. The first woman was a serious looking participant and caught many of the lads it seemed despite the 5 min gap.

Was a great event, conditions were miserable, but what do you expect its Ireland after all. I too would question the distances especially the bike, I only clocked 11.9K

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,570 ✭✭✭daymobrew

It was an enjoyable night and thankfully the misty rain wasn't too bad.
Having to rack the bike was a bit of a pain because, by the time I got my number (I was pre-reg and it still took 25mins!!) there weren't any spaces and I had to squeeze my bike in where there wasn't much space. I liked it in the past when I just dropped my bike on the ground way down the end of the line (a disadvantage I must say, but I'm a middle-of-the-pack person).

It was disappointing to see so many finishers being inconsiderate of those entering T2 - not giving them the space they deserved - I saw one woman weave through finishers as she started her run. The marshal did remind finishers but many didn't listen.

Elena Maslova won the women's race in around 42mins - she passed me half way through the second run. I finished in 47:30, about 5 mins slower than last year, but I haven't been training and I was conservative on the bike.

    That's what I found too - I measured the bike around 11.8km.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭hawkwing

From Google maps i measured that loop (bike course) to be a 2.45mile loop and i always do laps of it for running training, so 3*2.45miles = 11.82km

First duathlon and really enjoyable. Finished around the 42' mark, but saw no girls, so hope I got in there before them too.

Went out too fast on the first run, which is stupid considering running would be my first sport, cost me a little in pace later. Found the cycle fine. Left the heavier winter tyres on which gave me comfort on the bike. Got dropped by a few guys on the second run, which Bambaata one of them was probably you. Transitions I found tough in the wet as I hadn't my shoes cliped in and was pretty greasy. As I'm new to this game I can only improve.

Bambaata any idea of your placing?

    Hi Bambaata,

What sort of bike did you have, was it red and white with zipp wheels? I think i finished in 41:05 or there abouts so we would have been pretty close on the run and bike. I was wearing pulse gear.

Totally agree with everybody about the corners, think i was a bit over cautious tho but it wasnt worth risking a fall, got passed by the same guys on every corner.

Overall good race I knocked a minute of my PB from last year and definitely room for improvement in the next race so I gota be happy. Great crowd at the race as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,131 ✭✭✭Bambaata

I dont think i dropped you on the run. I got caught by two but didnt gain any on the final run and i could see a few others in the background which i was not going to let catch me! I didnt have my speedo on so couldnt measure it myself. I think i was in around 25th but not sure and was happy enough as i was 2:30 or so faster than last year eventhough conditions were worse yesterday.

Found it difficult coming back into T2. I couldnt find my runners and lost a few seconds. I'm going to have to employ some method of finding my stuff. I had picked out a leafless tree to find my bike but when i had to find my runners i had a lot of trouble! I didnt realise so many ha the same pair of runners as me.

Finished right behind Elena Maslova, so just over 47 for me.

Very - overly!! - cautious on the cycle and lost time and position on the corners, espcially at the bottomof the Kyhber Road but with first tri in Fingal in 10 days time didn't think it was worth risking a fall.

Second run was scuppered by by an impending cramp for the first half of the run - didn't get one but had that horrible feeling that it was bubbling under my skin so had to shuffle along for a while. Still managed to overtake a few runners but last year I was overtaking up to twenty on the last lap so hopefully I'll have a free run in June.

Great turnout as always, and some impressive times posted too

Yup that was me. That was my brand new P2C with the 606 set. I wasn't in any mood for attacking those corners seeing as my bike handling on it isn't great yet! And yes you were one of those who caught me :D I really need to get some speed off the bike. I just couldn't pick it up and when i did try half way around i started to get a stitch. I was hoping to try keep with you and the other guy for a sprint finish as i have a decent kick but you just gained too much ground! Congrats!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 179 ✭✭wellboss

Yeah i know its tough to try and keep with people, i struggled to gain on the older guy that was ahead of me, but he started to struggle with 200m to go and i got him in a sprint finish at the end. I used it as a good speed work session so hopefully i can kick on from here witht he running and get more speed in.

if we get dry roads in june we should knock a nice bit of our bike times.

Any sign of the results yet?

Bit slow getting them out - Did 43min plus change meself.
Second run was tough as I'd normally pass a good few runners but a couple passed me instead - need to get back on the track for a few speed sessions.

i heard they were hoping to have them later tonight as it was all manually recorded so theres a fair bit of admin work behind it. fingers crossed they are out tonight

Happy enough with the event. Felt afterwards that I should have pushed harder, but did complete a spring finish at least. Time was 45:08. I performed very well on the final hill onto the straight overtaking a good few each time, only to lose out elsewhere on the coarse.

Was in the gym last week and found that a smaller stride length / with higher cadence seemed faster (18sec faster for 5km PB), so I tried that in the race, and found that i did very good times for myself, particularly on 2nd run.

Hi 911SC - I think it was you I was talking to last night (from France?). Well done anyway. The below is from my training diary for last night.
06/05/2009 Event: Duathlon Dist 2.4km run, 13km cycle, 2.7km run. Very windy (20-30k) and cool. Stayed dry right up to the start then light drizzle, which gradually made roads slippy. Turned up for what was to be my first duathlon since 2007, first run race since January 2008 and second cycle race this year (this month!). I was pretty nervous about it as didn’t know how I’d do and even whether or not would manage it. Arrived up early at 17:15 as had not managed to book online, met Eugene (race organiser) and asked if would be OK to enter. He said it would but entries were not being accepted until 18:00. Met another chap (from France - a Triathlon Boardsie) doing the same thing. He told me what he reckoned was the route (I had left the map behind), so I cycled around that part of it. It was fairly OK, couple of small hills and strong wind was in face when climbing. From Acres Rd., down Khyber Rd. by the Magazine fort, RT up Military Rd., RT onto Acres Rd. The Transition area was by the trees at Acres Rd./ Khyber Rd. I cycled the lap a couple of times to kill time and get warmed up. I went to register at 18:00 but they then said that the people not previously registered online, would have to wait until 19:00. Went off did some stretches and ran the run loop. It was very open to the wind and felt very long. Came back, queued and chatted with the others then finally was allowed register. After that, I racked the bike and got rid of the gear. The chap I was talking to (911SC?) allowed me put main bag in his car - I had a little bag to throw long-sleeve top in at the start-line. Made way down to the start to receive instructions etc. At 19:40, started with the run (mass start) at the football fields for the 2.7km lap. It had started drizzling at this stage and in the strong wind, it was very cold. I got going OK and basically made a good few places during the route back into Transition. I arrived in at 10:03, found bike, changed shoes, helmet on, grabbed bike and left OK (about 11:00). Bit mad with small space and lads all trying to get on their bikes. Saw one shoe in middle of road and someone slip out, but I got going OK. Made up a few places on cycle, as hills caught people a bit (both up and down). I was wary of the bends as a couple were very slippery (especially the one down at the fort), so went in easy and out hard. Almost lost track of number of laps completed! Felt strong enough on the bike. Made better time on transition, in about 32:17 and out about 33:00. According to bike computer, Max speed 50.3, Ave. 32.7. Fairly wobbly-legged for the start of next run as knees all stretched from bike. Basically, allowed myself to adjust and keep up decent pace. Started with a bit of a stitch - probably from last quick drink on the bike but gradually caught a few people as I went along then speeded up at about 600m and again at 200m to catch a few more, finishing in 44:08. I noticed at least 3 lads had punctured during the race! Have to say, I felt good enough at the end which probably means I needed to put more into it rather than being conservative (didn’t think I was though!). Anyway, I have posted a time on the new route, and have it to beat next time. Had a quick chat with some of the lads afterwards (including Madhatter). On cycle home drizzle turned to rain, though wind was at my back so not too bad – got there pretty happy, looking forward to nice bath and beer.

not often i defend belpark but - patience lads, results take time when done by hand. if the event was chipped it would be 5 euro more expensive.

I did a non chip event in Ashford a couple of weeks ago and the result were up about an hour after I got home!

I was just thinking about this. I did a road race last night (just 5 miles). They had a hand held "thingie" (I'm good with techinical terms me!) that looked for all the world like a jumbo calculator. Al the start they entered our names into a laptop and as we finished, they entered our bib number into the "thingie" and there was a print out of the results within 30 minutes. Age groups sorted etc. I was pretty impressed, low tech but effective and I assume cheap.

Congrats to everyone at the Duathlon.

Are the womens times correct? 47mins for the winner or is it 47 mins - 5min delay at start = 42mins for the female winner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

I finished at 46 and the winning woman was a minute later so I reckon all ladies can subtract 5, assuming the start delay was exactly 5 minutes.

Did you finish right when someone else finished? Was your number visible?

The recorders are only human - let them know your finishing time and I'm sure they'll see that you did enter and that they don't have your finishing time listed.

There is a remote possibility that your photo is in the event's Picasa album (there are finishing photos of some finishers between 50:37 and 58:32).

No worries, it's not worth it. I was not competing for podium finish.

I had a look at all the photos last nigh...and did not even see myself!.
I will have to slow down next time and finish when the photos are taken:)
or speed up to be at the top but that would be more difficult.

Anyway, i would have finished 106th as my time was 48:32, 23sec faster than last year. Wow!!

    Thanks.
