Love his short films, I was gutted when his Halo film was put on hiatus, imagine what this guy could do with the budget a Halo film would provide him.

Eagerly awaiting this one, it's the most original idea for a scifi film I've heard of in years.

Released Sept 2nd here, produced by Peter Jackson. Best movie of the ever? And proof that there are still SOME ideas left in Hollywood

Dang, I thought this was something to do with that french freerunning movie. Still it looks interesting though, an angle on aliens I never saw before.

I can't wait to see this, this probably will be my film of the year.

If you haven't seen Alive in Joburg, the short film it's based on, you should check it out, it's great:

Really looking forward to this myself.

    Yeah looks quite interesting.

Funny tho.. it's not Hollywood.. its a SA director with a NZ producer .. so I would posit there are no new ideas in Hollywood :P LOL :)

That said this guy will be one to watch, the shorts he did for HALO were also worth checking out.

Could this restart the Halo movie project if its a success? Possilby.

I really liked Alive in Joburg and the Halo shorts. Blomkamp certainly is a talented director. Lokking forward to this.

    EDIT: What he said.

This. I can't understand why Hollywood is interested in making Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat movies rather than pushing ahead this generations biggest films. From what I've seen Gears of War and Bioshock films have both been caught up with budgetary concerns from the studio, the same reason for Halo being put on hold too. Hopefully Prince of Persian next summer will convince the execs that videogames may be the next decades golden egg, like comics are for this decade

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,612 ✭✭✭uncleoswald

Isn't the director of this the same guy who made the cool transforming car adverts? The ones infinitely better then 5 hours of big budget film by Michael Bay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 303 ✭✭manti452

    Thanks #7 :)

We still need a good VG movie before stuff like that will happen. Bioshock lost Gore Verbinski, who should have been able to secure the budget given his "pirates" success. Until a mega budget is there to do justice to the hyper reality that games provide this will always prove the final hurdle to games to movies adaptations.

Short answer: no I can't see Halo anytime soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Interesting thing is: Blomkamp doesn't seem to need huge budgets. The Halo movie is always going to be effects-laden so a certain amount of money would be needed, but with the backing of Peter Jackson behind him, I could not understand how they didn't give him the budget.

I thought it may be an experience thing, which is why I think if D9 is successful, Halo will be green-lit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 303 ✭✭manti452

Yeah I agree, seemed to be more of a problem at the studio end that saw an end to Halo so far...

Where microsoft will go now bungie's broken free is another story :)

But it will be criminal if District 9 doesn't get some attention

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

i've given up on VG movies i mean if they can balls up a great story in a game like max payne and to a lesser extent hitman like they did i don't want to see the likes of bioshock or halo being done.

Even though the new trailer is very action - heavy, I have a lot of interest in this movie. The ideas & themes seem to be somewhat unique & the mere fact it's set in Siff Afrika, not the USA, brings a freshness to the overall concept (aliens living amongst us). Looking forward to this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 782 ✭✭✭Cunning Alias

Cant wait for this, although I just keep thinking that this is the film that should have been Halo.

Oh and Halo got cancelled due to Microsoft demanding a silly percentage of the profits as they own the IP while not offering any money towards the production. A 200mil budget and a smaller profits return just wasn't worth it for Fox/Universal.

Check out Neill Blomkamp's non-halo shorts.

Only came across this last night. I watched this trailer before watching the rest. (and when you watch this one, you will understand why im only posting this one)

I nearly knocked it off half way saying "ah not another one of these films!" but Im really glad i didnt! :)

There are lots of other trailers, more revealing on youtube but dont want to spoil anything for those who havent come across it before.

    Nice!

    Not too far away either.

    Looks good.

But why do I get the feeling there's gonna be some deep moral message about life and mankind at the end of it?

Loved the first trailer. Not so much the 2nd one, as it seems to be a bit more action packed, but still have high hopes for it.

I'm quite looking forward to this, seems really interesting and setting it in south africa is a great idea.

The first trailer is crazy, at first when it starts with the African people complaining about "them not belonging here" I thought it was yet another cinematic ad telling us of the conflict in certain countries. Then the trailer cuts to a big ass alien ship hovering above a city.

It looks quite good, looking forward to it.

its produced by Peter jackson and the director is a noob as are most of the cast. It seems that they picked this up as soon as the news of the halo movie failing hit.

The second trailer seems to be better, imho but warning - thar be spoilers!

Check out the movie's website, it's quite cool, the site reminds me of the Paul Verhoeven style of movies... (not the movie just the website)

Have checked out a few reviews for this movie online. All have been very positive. Some say its the best movie this year. Good sign. Its been given an R rating in the states as far as i know so i guess it will be a fairly adult orientated movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭herya

This is the original short movie the film is based on - possible spoilers but it's excellent!

so its a satire i've been told...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 671 ✭✭✭madmac187

This movie is actually savage. I have seen some of it on the net. And its not a satire. Also check out the moon (not the twilight movie) and also to a lesser extent Pandorum (If you like horrors you all will love it). Trailers look good but donno about the movie. Will have to see.

I am looking forward to this. I really liked the short film it is based on : "Alive in JoBurg". Kind of a political/social commentary. As one poster said, the first trailer looks realy good but the one with all the action looks rather "Transformerish". I'm hoping that what they show in it is pretty much all the action type stuff.

    Anyway I have high hopes

It's set in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the aliens confined to a township ghetto. It sounds to me like the name District 9 was created by turning District 6 upside down, though I don't know if that's what the writer intended. So the message is hardly deep, and you won't have to wait till the end to see it, but that doesn't have to stop it being a bloody good SF movie too.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Saw it tonight (came out in Australia earlier then most places it seems) and it's feckin excellent. Not really a genre I would be into usually but I took a chance and I'm glad I did. Sharlto Copley is brilliant in the lead role.

    Defeinitely go see it.

Anyone know when it's out here? Think the worldwide release was today but can't find any cinemas showing it here.

    September 4th I think

Saw it last night in Sydney. I had absolutely no idea what the film was going to be about beforehand.

Thought it was only alright tbh.

It has a great first act with some really fresh ideas but after that it gradually descends into a fairly shallow splatter movie with no real connection established between the audience and the protagonist imho.

Still worth going to see if you just want to sit bit for a few hours and watch people get turned into molecules.

Just came back from it. I loved it. It helps when the cinema is plastered with viral marketing too.

    GRoss.

Its the kinda movie you should go into knowing not a whole lot about. Very good flick. Almost political in a way. And if you spent the money going to see T4 - this will be like Karma saying "I am SO sorry man, here."

Still not convinced: Spoiler-Free review http://io9.com/5322359/district-9-is-one-of-the-best-movies-of-2009

Spoilered review: http://io9.com/5337133/your-oppression-will-be-simulated-in-district-9?skyline=true&s=i - this one pretty much dissects the whole movie. Dont click before watching tbh.

The effects are stunning in it to say the least.
