RTE have announced their packages of games for the upcoming championship

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship/2009/0429/sundaygame.html
RTÉ Television have announced a comprehensive package of up to 40 live games to be broadcast during this summer's GAA Championships.

The national broadcasters coverage will begin on Sunday, 17 May when 'The Sunday Game Live' will show the Ulster SFC clash between Fermanagh and Down.

RTÉ will also show all the quarter-final, semi-final and final action from both the All-Ireland football and hurling Championships.

The showpiece Munster SHC and Ulster SFC will also be covered, as well as the eagerly-awaited clash between old rivals Dublin and Meath in the Leinster SFC.

Along with the live action, 'The Sunday Game' highlights show will return. The show's former presenter Pat Spillane will return to his old football pundit position, with Des Cahill taking the helm from 17 May.

Ger Loughnane will also be on hand to offer his analysis on the hurling action, after his two-year stint as Galway manager.

The country's obsession with Gaelic games was evidenced by the audiences of 709,000 and 703,000 that tuned in to watch last year's All-Ireland SHC and SFC finals respectively.

How come TV3 will have such a strong hold on Leinster hurling this year? According to that RTE will only be showing two matches there (Offaly/Wexford and one semi final).

I wonder how the games were divided between RTE and TV3? Alternate picks?

It seems RTE(if it was their choice) have decided to abandon Leinster almost entirely in the hurling although from what I remember from last year the Kilkenny cakewalk made for awful viewing from an entertainment perspective, wonderful for the purist however.

They also seem to be banking on the Ulster football championship-do they actually have every single game in it? Close anyway...

From what I remember from last year TV3 had the Leinster hurling final.

Does anybody know if BBC are showing the Ulster championship again this year.

Week 3: Offaly v Wexford, Tyrone v Armagh, Cork v Tipperary - what a feast of games...And they've picked a (potentially) much better game to open the championship with this year than last year...

TV3 coverage will be covering 10 games this year

TV3 ANNOUNCES GAA FIXTURE LIST FOR THE 2009 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
    * Four Provincial Finals to be shown live on TV3 this summer
    * TV3's coverage to open with Kerry's Munster Football Senior
    Football Semi-Final
    * TV3 to show "first pick" matches from the football qualifiers

TV3 is delighted to announce its ten exclusive live GAA Championship
matches for the forthcoming season. In the second year of this
significant contract, TV3 is the first independent broadcaster to show
live All-Ireland Senior GAA Championship matches as part of its
    three-year deal.

Opening with a classic Munster football clash on 7th June, TV3 cameras
will be live in the Kingdom as Jack O'Connor returns as Kerry manager
and they take on the winners of Cork and Waterford to battle it out in
the provincial football semi final. TV3 remains in Munster for its next
outing, the hurling semi final between Clare and the winners of Cork and
    Tipperary.

Then it's on to Croke Park to see Dublin or Meath take on Longford,
Westmeath or Wicklow in the Leinster Senior Football Semi Final on 28th
    June.

With four live provincial finals in July, TV3 will be there when the
first of the season's Championship silverware is handed out. The Munster
Senior Football Final, the Leinster Senior Hurling Final, the Leinster
Senior Football Final and the Connacht Senior Football Final will all be
live on TV3 over consecutive weeks in July.

TV3 will also show live and exclusive coverage of the Senior
Championship Football Qualifiers with "first pick" rights to all three
qualifying rounds. This promises to throw up some compelling encounters
as the qualifying system continues to add extra excitement to the
    Championship season.

TV3 will be announcing full details of its championship 2009 coverage at
a media event on Tuesday 26th May from Thurles. This event will also
mark the GAA's 125th anniversary with a live Ireland AM broadcast.
TV3 Sports Editor, Kieran Holden said: "TV3 is pleased to announce its
fixture list for the 2009 championship season. This year our fixtures
throw up some great clashes and July especially is a month not to be
missed on TV3 with four Provincial finals down for decision. This is the
second year of TV3's Live GAA Championship coverage. We were delighted
with the hugely positive feedback we have had from viewers and GAA fans
for last year's "Championship Live" programmes on TV3. This summer we
will look to further enhance our coverage and presentation of live
All-Ireland Senior GAA Championship matches on TV3."

Will RTE still shown the Cavan game on the 6th of June when they realise its clashing with the Ireland Bulgaria soccer game? Its kick off is 6.30.

I bet they'll show the Ireland game on Network 2 and the Football on RTE one or vice versa. Sure what else would be on tv on a Saturday night now that Tubs is off to the late late!!:D

Have Setanta still got the rights to show the matches in full later in the week?

I always found it a great way to catch up with games.

And if they are, have they also got any magazine type GAA programmes?

No, nothing listed for Carlow v Louth. They're showing a rerun of Fermanagh v Down on Tuesday evening alright but that seems to be it.

Anyone have an opinion on TV3 v RTE for the GAA championship?

I watched Cork v Kerry today and felt it was the most amateur coverage I've ever seen of a championship match.
Not only were they behind the play, they weren't sure of players names.
Worst of all they failed to draw attention to the fact that the referee had some shortcomings.
There were 2 minutes injury time to be played yet the ref gave a free to kerry to force a draw in the 74th minute. The ongoing issue of referee's playing for draws aside, the commentators on TV3 never even noticed.

I've been watching GAA on RTE for 40 years and never got that feeling that they were out of their depth.

Very disappointed with TV3's coverage today although not surprised given how badly they handled the rugby. Analysis and punditry was very poor and the commentator was not up to speed. Players were frequently 'scanning the horizon' to find teammates. WTF? Peter Canavan was a great player but doesn't have what it takes as a panelist.
There were a good few instances where replays of incidents leading to some of the referee's dodgy decisions could have been shown but I got the feeling that TV3 are afraid of being controversial.
Getting players names wrong is unacceptable, it's not as if the teams were unfamiliar.

jeez,I know soccer can be a painful bore[especially the premiership]but today's effort beats Banagher[maybe it wouldn't]One should be paid to watch such matches or maybe get tax credits as an incentive.I thought the new rules might free the players to treat us to footballing skills...fielding..fluent movement and cleverly executed scores.Naw,we're back to what is, dire tedium.I'll not complain too much as the players are amateur and produce really good fare ,sometimes ,during a season, but I fail to see why so many people get all excited each Summer.Soccer, though is overrated, overhyped and players are most certainly overpaid! Must have a look at that sky package again when the Lions tour is finished.Sorry, had to release some bile.P.S.Kerry match just a shade better.

So it seems Setanta Sports is on the brink of collapse. Obviously, their mains attractions are English and Scottish premiership matches but they also have the right to live championship 2009 coverage in the UK (basically they broadcast the RTE coverage and stick their own adverts in) the media coverage if focused therefore on that wider impact to TV and does not mention the GAA coverage!

Does anybody know what will happen to this coverage if Setanta disappears off the air? Obviously, this would be a great lose for those who have set-up house and home in the UK, as the coverage for this year seems pretty good - all live Saturday and Sunday games are scheduled in for the next two weeks.

Is there a chance the channel would continue without premiership games etc that it cannot afford to pay for but still show sports liike the GAA. Does anybody know if Setanta pays RTE for the rights to broadcast matches in the UK?

Sorry for all the questions, just interested in getting peoples opinions, obviously, time will tell what exactly will happen!

Mods, not sure if you want a seperate thread on this so please move if need be. I know there is a thread on this is in the soccer forum but nothing to do with GAA

Watched Des Cahill last night - Christ he looks very like he has a slaphead with an expensive RTE rug glued on - the non-hairline gives it away....has anyone ever noticed? I think we may have a kojak on our hands. I thought breathing through his nose was his only problem. Something to ponder when you next see him under the lights....

Interesting article in today's Irish Times concerning Setanta Sports relationship with the GAA

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2009/0623/1224249338961.html

GAA in dark on Setanta crisis implications

TV COVERAGE OF SPORT: THE GAA is awaiting developments in relation to the future of sports broadcaster Setanta. The association has a long-established relationship with the company, whose future has been cast into doubt in recent weeks and which was yesterday engaged in crisis discussions at board level.
In its early existence Setanta became the international rights holder for GAA fixtures and more recently has held through the Setanta Ireland channel rights to a number of floodlit National Football League matches.
“We’re still in the dark until we know what the new Setanta model is going to be,” said the GAA’s commercial and marketing manager Dermot Power.
“We’ve been in contact with them all the time. At stake are our international rights and domestic league rights. We do want to get the games to our people all over the world and as originally, pubs and clubs are still the major distribution channels for us overseas.”
Whereas Setanta’s acquisition of the international rights led initially to a major increase in revenue for the GAA, at one stage bringing in more than the domestic rights, recent developments such as the placing of RTÉ on Sky’s digital platform have severely weakened the market.
“International rights have receded hugely in importance. We had a very big European market that’s disappeared largely due to piracy and even in the UK the number of set-top boxes travelling across the sea has greatly reduced the number of signed-up pubs.
“We don’t know what’s coming out of this. There’s talk that the Irish operation might survive but that still leaves America and Australia.
“There was a business model before they went for the (English) Premiership, which was basically wholesaling rights and they had a pub circuit in Britain, America and Australia and you don’t know if that’s going to be revived.”
The company has lost soccer rights for both the English and Scottish premier leagues in recent days because of failure to meet contractual payments.
Asked if the GAA were experiencing similar problems, Power said: “No. Everything is okay at the moment.
“Setanta have been long-term partners of ours. We’d be very supportive of them and have been in communication with them throughout these difficulties. All they’re saying at this stage is that they don’t know until the picture clears.
“You’d hate to see anything happen to them. They’ve been very good to us, spreading the games around the world and helping make our prices more competitive by bidding for rights.
“Would the deals with pubs in America be affected by Setanta Holdings going into administration? I understand that’s a profitable operation. Our market is still largely funded by pubs and clubs and while there is a subscription service that’s a much smaller portion of our overseas rights.”
Meanwhile, the soccer authorities also have issues to consider as the company’s troubles have cast a major doubt over the future for the Setanta Sports Cup, with the draw for this year’s event, scheduled for Thursday, postponed yesterday, ostensibly on the basis that the company needs to “gain clarity” in relation to some of the issues facing it at present.
Five clubs from the League of Ireland and four from the Irish League were in line to compete in the event this year which was due to kick off in late August and finish in the middle of May next year.
The event is worth around €150,000 to the winners and its loss would be another blow to clubs like Bohemians, Derry City and St Patrick’s Athletic, who have already been hit by the downturn in the economy.
FAI chief executive John Delaney said last week that if Setanta’s backing of the tournament was withdrawn then it would be unlikely to take place this year.
Setanta’s problems were highlighted by confirmation yesterday that the Premier League in England has sold the TV rights for 46 of its games live next season to ESPN, the sports network owned by American media giant Disney.
ESPN is understood to have paid around €106 million after Setanta, the previous rights-holders, failed to make a €11.8 million payment on Friday.
Next season, dominant pay-TV firm BSkyB will show 92 games and for the following three years, BSkyB will show 115 and ESPN the remaining 23. Setanta also yesterday lost the rights to show Scottish games after also defaulting on a rights payment.
This article appears in the print edition of the Irish Time

lads, dont bother giving your money to Setanta for this. I ordered the Dubs V KK game yesterday and got the computer out a few minutes to 4pm and while the games icon said I had paid and ordered it it did not give me any option to actually play it nor did it do so for the next hour, so I totally missed watching the game live, even though it was advertised as a live PPV. absolute was of 10 quid

I checked back later that night and the game was available to watch as the system records it for you. However, the signal was terrible kept on stopping and starting, I gave up after 10 minutes and watched the sunday game instead and that streamed no problem so cant be my internet connection that was slowing it down. I have sent two emails to setanta but no response, nor am i expecting one

I couldn't agree with you more GAA "is not like football or rugby" its better.

Have you ever watched a high octane game of Football or hurling and then tried to watch a soccer match afterwards where they pass the ball backwards more times then they pass forward? Brutal stuff altogether.

Rugby's not bad either but GAA (both codes) are much faster.

Is it any wonder that the GAA attracts Irelands best athletes?

I heard about it from a friend who was at the game. But to be honest it might suit Meath down to the ground. Moving through the qualifiers without creating too much of a stir, before ye know it ye'll be in an all ireland quarter final toppling Tyrone.

Poor old Mickey Harte won't have seen it coming!! ;)

    http://www.irishpost.co.uk/tabId/550/itemId/4243/GAA-may-beam-in-to-pub-chain.aspx

CROKE Park is exploring the possibility of broadcasting live GAA games into Britain through a pub chain with venues in England, Scotland and Wales.
The revelation has come after it was revealed that talks took place between an unnamed licensee and the GAA last week, where the possibility of reinstating live Gaelic games was discussed.
When contacted by The Irish Post, GAA commercial and marketing manager Dermot Power said: “We have been in talks with a pub chain in Britain, but we are not any further down the line than that and we’re not in a position to comment on the issue any further right now.”
The Irish community in Britain has been without live Gaelic games for nearly three weeks after broadcasting giant Setanta Sports pulled the plug on its British-based coverage for financial reasons.
Now, both publicans and punters are eagerly awaiting a resolution to a sports diet of blank screens and dreary Sundays.
Speaking about the GAA drought, a spokesman for Waxy O’Connor’s pub in London’s War-dour Street said: “Everyone badly wants a resolution to this now - both punters and publicans. Typically we would have been getting crowds of a couple of hundred in here on Sundays during the summer, and they were all coming to watch the live GAA.
“That definitely leaves a dent, but it’s equally as tough on the supporters - they want to see the games, but have nowhere to go to watch them.”
With the GAA now in control of the rights, the onus is on Headquarters to find a broadcasting solution to the current impasse.
To date, however, GAA supporters have been accessing live games through the Setanta-i player on a match pay-per-view basis by clicking on to www.setanta.com/i/global.
Setanta-i player requires the Microsoft Silverlight and Auto-bahn plug-ins, which are down-loadable from the Setanta website.

Wonder who it could be. I would guess that Waxy O'Connors are to small and they do not have branches in Wales AFAIK. Could be Walkabout (just pure speculation), they already do a lot of marketing of aussie rules, rugby etc. already or maybe O'Neills.

It tried to do more than it should have - broadcasting soccer matches from the premiership etc...only problem was it only got the low key matches so people with sky stuck with sky.

Without asking the abvious (which I suppose I am) does anybody know what happened justintv.com/nern over the weekend. Website just said content removed at the request of the copyright holder.

Also on a related matter has anybody tried the Setanta PPV coverage online for expats. I tried it the first week it went live (about 3 weeks ago) and wasnt too pleased at the coverage. Has it improved since then?

It was working on Saturday, but I got the same message yesterday. None of my other sources seemed to be working yesterday either

I am not trying to advertise a different sport on here, but our Australian Rules friends currently are showing their matches free and live on the AFL uk site, because nobody owns the rights to broadcasting them. (Well I assume the AFL themselves own them after the collapse of Setanta)
I am going to email the Gaa to see if they would consider doing the same themselves, not expecting any reply to be honest!

I think, from what i head through the media, that the GAA are already looking at broadcasting themselves online in the UK. As Sentanta owned the rights and have collapsed those rights revert back to the GAA

A response within 5 minutes! Good going, but unfortunately they are directing me to the previously discussed unreliable Setanta online PPV serivice
    a chara,

Many thanks for your email. Setanta have continued their UK coverage through their online streaming service, http://www.setanta.com/i/global/. Please contact global.setanta.i@setanta.com with any technical problems relating to it.

We appreciate that this is not an ideal arrangement for many and are still holding discussions regarding the reintroduction of games to TV, most likely via a nationwide pub or club chain.

    Le meas,

Not true. Setanta Plc owns the global rights outside Ireland. It was only its subsidiary company, Setanta UK Limited, that went bust so the UK rights do not revert to the GAA.

I also have tried the http:\\www.setanta.com/i/global site and was unable to watch any game the weekend before last. I got everything setup on the Firday evening and then invited a few friends around to watch the live matches. Tried to access the page a few hours before the throw in and I kept getting the standard UK page informing me that Setanta UK was no more. I have tried to access it a few times since then and always get the same page. I tried again today and it seems to be working again, but I won't trust it again untill others report they actually can watch a live match from the UK.

I agree it is a god awful service - plenty of other station like TG4 are available online in the UK and stream pefect coverage so I dont understand why Setanta cannot do it. I may give it a try this weekend as I really want to watch the hurling 1/4 finals and all other sites seem to be blocked now - I will let you know how it goes, but my hopes are petty low at the moment
