Your mission if you choose to accept it is to climb Shay Eliott and Slieve maan.

As a lot of use have cycled the 1st and last bits of the WW200 last weekend, now it's time to tackle the hard bit in the middle ...

Meet Saturday Dundrum 9AM under the Luas Bridge.

Be there - and bring your own jellies ...

I'll probably be in. And I'll definitely be bringing more food than I did last time I was down that neck of the woods

Could you folks give me some idea of the route you'll be taking? I won't be able to make it on Saturday but might do something similar on Monday.

What kind of distance would you be covering on this route? I want to try both these climbs at least once in the next month but was planning on driving to Laragh and doing about 120-130km route from there including both climbs and then driving home, but if you are planning on fitting both these in on a route under 130km on Saturday, I might join you.

I'm going to the rugby so have to be home, recovered and in town by 5pm, what time would you expect to make it back to Dublin at, roughly?

I could also look at either joining you along the route somewhere or turning back early (no point if I don't get to include the climbs) if it meant I could fit in the climbs and still be back in Dublin for say 3pm.

This is the route we've taken the last few times I've been on a Slieve Mann run. 130km from Dundrum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,400 ✭✭✭Caroline_ie

It will be for me anyway a 150km + spin - we are currently working on a route to follow that will include Larragh.
I know Scottreynolds, LDB and Raam did something similar a couple of weeks ago, going via Djouce. That could be a good way to get back.

Yeah it was a nice route, about 160k from home. Takes most of the day though!

Slieve Mann means a long day in the saddle, no two ways about it.

I'd be up for it too, but I also want to be back for the biggest ever rugby game in the history of the world. So no bloody 10am meeting for a 2pm rollout!
Would also rather not go back up the soul-destroying N11 if possible, although it might well be the fastest I suppose.

N11 outbound gets you down there nice and quick, but we came back last time via Laragh and Roundwood.

Ah right - not having mile markers on routetoaster, I figured that you went down through laragh. Couldn't understand why ye were doing slieve man from the other side :) Seems obvious now!
    DOH!

Yeah, it's a toughie alright. But I think it's the fastest way to scout out those two climbs.

My geography south of Laragh is, eh, patchy. Do we actually get all of both of the climbs if we tun onto to w200 route at Slievemane? Or do we miss the rise before the real climb - it's hard to tell without the mile markers.

I'm warning any nay sayers up front. There will be coffee and cake.

You miss the drag before Slieve Mann... but there is a tough enough climb before Slieve Mann on the alternative route, probably harder than the one on the W200 route.

Thi is a good route but I hate going down the N11. You may be better going through Enniskerry - Main Road to Laragh -- Rathdrum -- Both Climbs -- Laragh - Roundwood -- DJouce -- Eniiskeery -- etc
I know Scottreynolds, LDB and Raam did something similar a couple of weeks ago

I wasn't in this failed attempt at a full spin

The route is easy one you have got to Rathdrum. el Tonto skills at finding the longest climb to the bottom of Slieve Mann are excellent. Its very remote and watch out for the cat lady she'll scratch your eyes out...

Oh no ... I think Caroline was confused... I thought she was talking about the ride with the german contingent that resulted in tired people....

We went home via Laragh not there via Laragh. Maybe I'm confused. Sorry for any confusion on me part.........

Look up this post.... or... from Naas -- get to Laragh... cycle towards Rathdrum first right 1km out from Laragh....

I can plot a route for you when I get a chance. However, unless you want to go right back over those two, your best way home is via the Wicklow Gap.

Looks like a good saturday to be living on the southside.

    I am most definitely in.

@Gavin: Could you not get a lift to Dundrum and roll out with us?

From Naas go to Blessington then follow this years W200 - donard, etc will bring you right up and over. And yes, once you're over you've got to either go back or continue around through laragh and the wicklow gap. If you were feeling lazy of course you could ascend and descend the same side and retrace your route to Naas.

ah, that's a good idea. Cheers el tonto & ken, I'll roll with that.

On Saturday I have a very important visit to make, so will be off the (old) bike.

Can we at least agree to leave the coffee and cakes until after the climbing, as a reward like?

That means we don't stop at Larragh 1st, we climb, go back down again, eat, and climb again to get back ?

Probably the best way of doing it, no? Anyway if we go down via the N11 we won't be going through Laragh on the way back.

Huh? We should be going through Laragh on the way back. The route I suggested was like last time, i.e. not hitting Laragh until Slieve Mann and Glenmalure are done with.

    You people and your cake.

I suppose though I really shouldn't be slagging the cake people, given that I bonked the last time I did this spin and pleaded for a food stop.
