Just back from the premiere there (free ticket). Thought it was ok, your typical block-buster really. Highly entertaining, though it failed to suspend my disbelief through-out.

    For die-hard Trekkies only.

If you're saying it's a typical blockbuster, then it probably isn't for die-hard Trekkies. As a fan, if it's going to be generic explosions all over the place, it won't really feel like Star Trek.

I was just informed it was rather excellent actually!

Didn't bother with the after-show party in Sycamore, then? :p

Eh? Kind of contradicting yourself a bit there. :pac:

I think what he was trying to say was that its really only people who go weak at the knees at the mention of *klingon* that would get anything more then your average blockbuster out of the film. (i.e if its star trek we love it regardless of content)

Course with trekkies thats not exactly very true seeing as they like a healthy portion of star wars fans tend to be the shows biggest critics, i point to the classic write up on star wars fans:

I'm expecting it to be quite good (not a massive Trek fan). Its got a 100% rating on Rottentomatoes.com from 14 reviews.

    Empire gave it
    4 stars
    .

I know 2 people who had free tickets to the event. Both texted me within about 10 minutes of each other. Both thought it was brilliant. One was a Trek fan, the other was definately not.

When the likes of the Times newspaper
gives the movie 5/5, you know its going to be very good.

    Looking forward to it!

Looking forward to it!....but as with alot of Star Trek, the timeline and continuity has been totally destroyed!

Example, in Enterprise the ship was built in a shipyard in orbit...with the new movie it's built on earth, um...Enterprise took place BEFORE Kirk, so how did the technology not advance so as they built the ship in orbit in the new movie?

    Just one of many examples.

    For die-hard Trekkies only.

That's the thing tho. Is it for Trekkies? All the trailers make it look like some sort of Buffy the Vampire level schlock.

Just because they built it on earth doesnt mean they suddenly lack the tech to build ships in orbital shipyards ...

Anyway seeming that it's been 7? years since the last star trek film and the reviews are quite good (still 100% on rotten tomatoes with 14 reviews) im quite hopefuly for an enjoyable film i dont really care if theres a lot of battle's and the like's pritty much all star trek films are like that i just hope its not to teeny.

Mind you i really wish they didnt fugly up the enterprise so much

Well the TOS Enterprise was built in San Fran and assembled in orbit according to some TOS documentary. So the new film is sort've in keeping with that.

Watching this new one at the IMAX, really looking forward to it :)

I'm really looking forward to this. I'm in no way a Star Trek fan. I've seen a few of the previous films. Thought they were ok. First Contact was quite good I thought but just viewed a trailer there and it looks absolutely amazing. Sure there might be things that I may not understand that Trekkie fans may only get but I'll definitely be going to check this one out. May 7th it's out or am I wrong?

That is hilarious. Glad to see there are people more dysfunctional than trekkies.
I dont really think there will be a trekie on this planet that will like this movie, it screws too much with, well, everything. It looks like a good movie, but not a star trek movie

Most of the non trekkies i know who have seen it thought it was really good.

There were just too many plot-holes in this for me to really enjoy it. It was so clichéd through-out...again a good blockbuster but not a great film.

My original point was that only a die-hard Trekkie could see this as anything more than a throwaway blockbuster, but I'd say they could hate it the most as
if those evil alien miner fellas fecked up the time-line and changed the course of history as the plot suggests, then where does that leave the plots of the numerous Star Trek TV series' and movies that came after; does that mean they just never happened? Very confusing film on the whole.

A lot of people will like this film, and fair play to them, but it did very little for me.

Only reason I am interested in this is J.J. Abrams.

It's a re-imagination like BSG was, the new movies follow on from there.
The old movies/series wouldn't be out much as it ended up the position they were in i.e. Kirk Captain. Only clash would be other timeline Spock

Trust me, non trekkies will enjoy it too, well except people that like movies about animated talking fish or Mr Bean i.e morons. it has plenty of flaws but still a good pop corn movie.

I saw the trailor. The music was very heavy on the drums and I lot of people were running around. It looked much more action orientated. Looked like serious people doing serious things. I wonder if the banter between kirk, spook and McCoy is clever.

I am going to see it next Tuesday, also a free ticket that I have won in a competition. Will bring a friend who is not a Star Trek fan (yet) but she said she saw the trailer and is interested because of the action scenes. So maybe after seeing the movie she will be a fan? When she realises that there is a lot more than special effects in it? It was the same for me a couple of years ago. Friends "forced" me to watch the series with them. But I enjoyed it after all!

Looking foward to this too, lets hope it is better than Nemesis anyway...probably the worst trek movie of all:pac:

And Zachary Quinto should play a good part, playing Sylar in Heroes is a nice gig for him and he seems to be doing it well:)

    Saw it earlier - deadly!

Now for something nerdy: Did the kid in the trailer fluff his lines? He says in answer to the cop's question that he is "James Siberius Kirk". I though it should be James Tiberius Kirk as in James T Kirk.

saw this tonight, really enjoyed it

not a trekie in the slightest so i dunno how the fans will take it, but for the neutral (as it were) it was very enjoyable. some sniggerworthy moments in it

didnt think pegg was a good choice tho

Saw this at the movies.ie screening tonight and really enjoyed it. Not a Trek fan by any stretch. I do admire the cheesiness of the original series though, and I was happy to discover this emulates that fun, nonsensical escapism. The effects are excellent, Abrams action and visuals top notch, and the cast are all endearing
(and good to see an extended role for Nimoy, even if Shatner is missed!)
    .

It is just great fun, and easily the most fun film I've seen in a while (yeah, much better than Crank 2). It is silly sci-fi, but extremely entertaining silliness.

I've been to the preview screening tonight. Boy that was good.

I was surprised how similar the characters were to the original actors in the series, in a positive way. It looked like Chris Pine had copied the Kirk's style to sit in the captain's chair. Zachary Quinto plays an unbeatable cool Spock. Cool not in the sense of cold and heartless, quite the opposite, if you liked Spock before you will love him now :-)

For the men in the cinema Uhura might have been an optical highlight as well.

I had my non trekkie friend with me who also enjoyed it a lot.

Was at this last night as well. Must say I really really enjoyed it. Straight from the opening scene I was hooked! Rarely does a film come along that within the first hour I am certain I will be pre-ordering the dvd. This was one of those films. Alot of action, alot of comedy moments!

Also think that Simon Pegg was not best choice. However, I feel he did good job but he just looked out of place somehow. Like a cartoon character in a live action movie. But loved him in it. Confsuing I know lol.

I think overall is very enjoyable film. Even recommended it to my parents, who id be surprised if they have ever watched an episode of Star Trek.

Defo tied for best film ive seen in 09 (beside Watchmen)

Go see this as soon as it comes out, if you dont like it ill refund you the money!

And just thinking back on it, I want to go see it again. Might drag the girlfriend along to it next week lol

I was at the screening last night too, and thought it was excellent. They definietly nailed the characters, but as I said on the review forum, that I thought Scotty was a bit off. Too much of a bumbling comic relief. Bones is fantastic though.

I thought Bones was the best too. I knew the actor was the lead from 'Doom' so I wasn't expecting great things, but he was funny and likeable as well as really capturing the original character.

Overall I thought the movie was pretty stupid, but entertaining. I guess the best way to sum it up is "What if Star Trek was a 2009 action movie by the guy who did Cloverfield"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 993 ✭✭✭bigslick

+1 on Bones. Some of his lines were gold!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,371 ✭✭✭acquiescefc

reminded me of a kind of 'James Bond - The early years' in a space-y kinda way.

But yeah, watched the original star trek epis and thought it was very good updated version of that. The comedy aspect was great, as opposed to the nerdy way deep space nine/starbar whatever was/is.

not as good as Anvil, very close but different kinda movie tho.

Having never seen the original series I loved the film. Much better than the other action blockbusters of the last 2-3 years.
