Grand orchestral soundtracks might dominate this thread (and with a lot of merit too) but i really like the Fight Club soundtrack by The Dust Brothers. It works within the context of the film, is used so appropriately and is interesting enough to listen to on its own.

Countdown to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack :)

Do you think the LOTR soundtrack is a bit of a one trick pony though, Rhyme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

Not at all, i really enjoy it (both on and off-screen). It just seems to be one that crops up again and again because of its epic nature.

That Morricone song you posted is beautiful. Nice pick.

Morricone is a genius, no doubt about it.

A shout out too for John Williams, John Barry, Bernard Hermann, Michael Nyman, Jerry Goldsmith, Maurice Jarre and Angelo Badalamenti .... all great composers with CVs to die for!

+1 for Dazed and Confused OST

Also, The Matrix OST is excellent. Listened to it on repeat for months after the movie got released. It had the Prodigy, Leftfield, Rob Zombie, RATM, Rammstein and the Deftones amongst other great songs.

Big difference between Scores and Soundtracks.
I presume the OP means scores, for which Morricone and Philip Glass are incredible standouts.

Well if we are going for scores, nothing beats "Requiem for a Dream" in my opinion. Especially the use of "Lux Aeterna" in the movie itself. It was the perfect piece for the scene it played over, and evokes a perfect sense of dread and hopelessness.

The fact that Friday Night Lights hasn't got a sniff from any of you is just disappointing.

    Morricone is brilliant too though.

Friday Night Lights soundtrack is a curiosity but fantastic. I'll be honest and say i've had the soundtrack for ages and am only now wondering what the film was like.

The soundtrack to Once Upon a Time In America, yes you guessed it, Morricone again. Read a Tom Waits (the greatest artist ever, imo) question and answers thing recently, and he mentioned this was one of his favourite pieces of music of all time.

This is the original theme to the movie.. Wow!

Also Deborah's Theme from the soundtrack.. Wow again!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

Scores are of course soundtracks too.

My initial selection, Once Upon a Time in America is truly a stand as scores/soundtracks go but here are some more and I'm glad that some of these have already been mentioned.

    1. Forrest Gump.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FRqxtAlnFw
I have the score for this film but to be honest, it's not really worth buying if you already have the original soundtrack and the suite. For a long time I had it penned as my Funeral Music because it's just some of the most beautiful melodies that I have ever heard and a true high point in Alan Silvestri's career. I cried at the end of forrest gump, but that was the power of the music rather than the power of poor Jenny's death. Outstanding.

    2. The Mission
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbBXuNmUR4M&feature=PlayList&p=C7AAB3E573DC5CE4&index=0
You may start to see a theme developing here, I'm a sucker for beautiful melodies...and this one is definitely in the top 3 of all time. Put this piece of music to any video and it will enhance its impact 100 fold. A fine example too of a soundtrack that is vastly more popular, and superior to the movie that it belonged to. Another classic ennio piece.

    3.
    K-Pax
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAgp-BeBnOs
So original, so beautiful. Even with the mighty Ennio there are a few tracks that are a bit, odd, so you may have to skip on to the next....this is a mine of musical nuggets and if you don't have it i suggest you pick it up...a really good chill out score. The film is fairly enjoyable too actually.

    4. Braveheart
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXRaMcf05Us&feature=PlayList&p=5737889AFFA9E49D&index=4
I'm in two minds about James Horner. This score is not really an original choice but there's no denying its, for want of a better word, brilliance. It's a shame he's had to recycle it in so many other films. Here's one example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Cj0VgU7qfY From about 2:40 onwards...it really is a bit shameless.

    Great music though.

    5. Gladiator.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPgxsGRpiuw

The two stand out pieces of this great soundtrack are The Battle, and Honor him (above) Honor Him is another fantastic choice for a funeral piece...haha I'm so morbid. Again, not an original choice but has to be mentioned.

    6. Superman
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehmFl1sjkXg

Possibly one of the greatest movie "themes" there has ever been. Improved the movie 50% and also possesses a very understated love theme that's as beautiful as Williams has ever done.

    7. The Truman Show
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjvspeLgeww
Burkhard Dallwitz and Phillip Glass combine for this one, some great melodies and themes but as a soundtrack I think it falls done a little with some poor track selections interspersed with genius. Everyone should still have it in their collection though.

    8. Last of the Mohicans
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqklYD45i3Y

First off, isn't it so annoying when you want to hear your favourite score on you tube and the first 20 or so results are people playing it on their key boards. Anyway, another dual composer soundtrack and is stunning. Simple as. Another must for your collection.

    9. Da Vinci Code.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5FyRZbqfeM
What?!!! I hear you all cry. This track alone is worthy of the whole score getting a mention. Well done Hans...an instant classic. This really is beautiful.

    10. Unbreakable
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27FosuOUv3I

I wanted 10 to be an original choice. I think this is a wonderful soundtrack and really captures all the moods of the film. James Newton Howard has done a helluva great scores and this is my personal favourite. He's an under-rated talent.

Honourable mentions to Love Actually by Craig Armstrong, The Matrix by Don Davis...ah look i could give honorable mentions all night...

And yes, I know I left out some great soundtracks...feel free to expand on my list.

    Hands down winner for me.

I genuinely feel privileged to be alive in Ennio's lifetime.

When I seen the title Ennio Moricone was the first name that came to mind, especially his work for Cinema Paradiso and The Mission, his piece 'Gabriels Oboe'........ahhh......doesnt get much better!

I also love the soundtrack from 'Das Leben der Anderen', as well as 'Once'.

I think Eddie Vedder did a stellar job on the Into the Wild OST, and Michael Brook's score is equally good. Some nice tunes from Kaki King and Canned Heat in there too, absolutely cracking tunes all round.

Reservoir Dogs is another one I rate very highly, and of course then Mr. Morricone deserves a mention. :)

Hans Zimer has more than his fair share:

    Black Hawk Down

    Gladiator

Not the usual pick when people say Gladiator but one of the best tracks on the film score:

    Thin Red Line

    Backdraft(for rugby fans:D)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭mle1324

    Platoon by far,great music.:):)

I'd agree with many of the choices posted already, especially"The Truman Show", "Blade Runner", "Gladiator", "Lord of the Rings","O Brother Where Art Thou" and the end title of "Ravenous".
I have a liking for the work of Ryuichi Sakamoto, mainly in "The Wild Side" and "The Last Emperor".
Athough not scores as such,Stanley Kubricks choice of music for his films was excellent, the two most outstanding being "The Shining" and the Ligeti music in "2001:A Space Odyssey".
Three more:although a poor film, I think the soundtrack for "Van Helsing" is good.I really like "Strange days, both the soundtrack and Graeme revell's score. But the outstanding recent score for me is the one for "The Thin Red line" by Hans Zimmer. His work on "The Dark Knight" was brilliant too, I thought.
Also worth a mention is James Horners calm, Holst-like score for "Aliens".
