Would you rather be Blind or Deaf?

I was asked the other day by someone, "Would you rather be Blind, or Deaf?" (I wondered what he was plannin' to do to me)

Anyway, I said deaf because blind people need more care and deaf people get along ok.

So if you had to choose between the two, what would you pick?

Plus, technology will be able to get rid of deafness before blindness.

Definitely deaf... I think blindness would be far more debilitating.

It brings on the second question of would you rather be blind/deaf from birth or to lose the sense later in life?

Rather be deaf, and from birth.

I imagine it'd be much more difficult to cope with such a disability if you were living for a decade or two without it.

Blind without a doubt, at least when your blind you can still enjoy the most important thing in life , and thats a casual conversation with someone.

Everyone always says deaf, but I could definitely live with not being able to see more than not being able communicate easily, no more music, no more chat, no more sounds around you

I think you must be wrong there. Surely it is easier to learn sign / lip reading when you understand the language, rather than having a young child trying to learn how to communicate from scratch without any basic understanding???

Plus in this day of e-mail, twitter, text and boards, nobody actually converses anymore, do they?

I said blind. I've a good photographic memory, thats all I need. That way if some fucker was slagging me off for being blind, I'd swing my cane around till I hit 'em, and set my dog on them.

Yeah, I know they are specially trained, but this is my story.

Definitely deaf, if I was blind my pc would have fingerprints all over the screen.
/ not being able to read threads anymore would be terrible so it would

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭andala

preferably neither but if I were to choose, I'd say deaf. I always sing out of tune anyway...

    Neither!

I have seen/heard an old saying that "blindness cuts you off from objects but deafness cuts you off from people" (or words to that effect).

Deaf people are more likely to be lonely.

As much as I love music, there's no way I could bare being blind. If it's a choice between those two, I'd prefer to be deaf.
Aaaargh, can I not just lose another sense? If I lost my sense of taste my diet would become so much healthier.

    How so?
The people who were packing at the checkouts in Dunnes today for charity were blind.
It was awesome to watch them chatting away in sign.

Deaf people are more likely to be lonely.

I have been hard of hearing since birth and this sums up exactly what it is like.

I would choose to be blind then at least I could have a conversation with people.

If people want to enter my world wear ear plugs for a week and see what it is like.

As for sign language being awesome to see, so is talking in Russian.

I've lost hearing in one ear for only a week but found it incredibly irritating, for me though this is a non contest, theres nothing worse in my mind than being blind, imagine not even knowing what you look like or what anything looks like

Yes but you can hear people talking in Russian.

I was referring to the animated conversation I saw going on around me, that's all.:)
    I saw no loneliness.

lol,im communicating with you,the only thing i live without is music, being blind would be worse than being deaf believe me you,ya wake up in the morning and ya wouldnt be able to see the colour of the sky etc, what people you know look like, drive a car, play football,i could go on and on about everyday things in life people take for granted and so on,so many more advantages to being deaf than blind

I'm not deaf, but occasionaly suffer from severe tinnitus - sounds like a (old fashioned CRT) television LOPT it's so loud that I often can't follow any conversations going on around me. I have it right now :(

Blind. Then i wouldn't have to look at people. Besides, when you're deaf, you're totally cut off from the world. A lot more so than when you're blind, in my opinion.

tough one to be honest. I have 3 cousins who are almost completley deaf and are gonna lose their hearing for sure, sadly the same 3 are gonna go fully blind also. No word of a lie.
They seemed happy with the bad hearing cos they was born with it I suppose. They scared about the blindness. Pardon the pun but it such a hard thing to see, loved ones knowing their future.

That would be reality turned on it's head. Deaf people lead more social lives. They can sign. They can lip read. Most of all they can be much more independent whereas the blind are much more dependent. You may think ah but because they're dependent they're more social! Not so. Usually this just means one or two people and a guide dog.
Fewer menial functions are compromised for the deaf. It's also easier for the deaf to be integrated into society.
