I'm not worried about this flu. I am worried about the dreams I've been having though - in them, I'm wandering through a cornfield and I can hear this old woman singing. Seems peaceful enough but then I end up being chased by some scary dude whose face I can't see. Ah well, I'm sure it's just the crystal meth.

This swine fever going to humans was how the spanish flu pandemic started. Hope that's just a coincidence...although we could probably do with a cut in world population. Just kind of sucks when you're in the demographic this thing likes killing.

    Nah!!

The government's too cheap for that! They'll bring over a couple of dozen Mexicans and put them to work in the dole offices, interviewing infecting claimants.

This could be very worrying, especially to Pighead as it's "swine flu".

But on the other hand, it'll sort out the recession!

    thats pretty sick

60 deaths out of roughly 1000 infected. That's 6%. For comparison, pneumonia has a mortality rate of about 5%.

The latest US figures have about 10 cases, all but one have recovered, one still in hospital.

So appears treatable if caught early. (I could phrase that better)

    We're all going to die!!!...Don't panic!!!!!........Don't panic!!!!.

A new flu virus suspected of killing at least 60 people in Mexico has the potential to become a pandemic, the World Health Organization's chief says. Margaret Chan said the outbreak was a "health emergency of international concern" and must be closely monitored.

In New York up to nine people from a school party tested positive for what is believed to be swine flu after returning from a trip to Mexico.

And in London a member of a British Airways cabin crew was taken to hospital with "flu-like symptoms" after falling ill on a flight from Mexico City to Heathrow.

That's a bit close to home methinks.

    AAAhhhh..chhoooooo..

    /sniffle

Don't worry, us boardsies will be fine. Last time I checked you can only get viruses from physical contact with other individuals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

If you ever played the web gamme pandemic you would know that if the virus is detected this early and a state of emergency is declared that you (the virus) have no chance of wiping out the human race as you wont have time to kill 100% of all humans before they become innoculated.

Although theres still that slight change the vaccine will fail and you mutate and become untreatable. Then yeah we as humans are pretty boned.

    Serious question:

In Mexico they are handing out facemasks to everyone, is that to protect the user or to prevent the user infecting others.

In other words who does the mask protect, the wearer or those around, assuming the wearer is already infected?

These reports are assuming that these people have the swine flu, it could be that they just have a cold!

Wait for the results before panicing.
