Upper Body Weight Training

    Hi all,

I've been getting back into some training in the last few months and have always just concentrated on cardio work. I'm in my late 30's, 5ft 10 and 85kg and have never really considered a weight training regime but I think it's time I did assuming it's not too late!!

The bottom line is I have a poor posture (slouchy shoulders) and poor upper body strength over all. I can only manage 8 push ups before colapsing all together. Pathetic or what?

I'm a member of a big gym in South Dublin and would like start using the weights room. I know I can ask a gym instructor to give me a plan but I bet there are some serious experts here who might be able to point me in the direction of a workout aimed primarily at building up my chest, arms and shoulders. My legs for some reason (presumably the continuous cardio work) are pretty good.

Can anyone send me a link to an upper body workout which will do the trick?

    Thanks

    Fish

great upper body routine that works for me

1 set of dumbell bench press then 1 set rows x3

1 set of dumbell soulder press then 1 set lateral pulldown x 3

1 set barbell bench press then 1 set push up x 3

1 set of bicep curls then 1 set tricep curls x 3

keep on progressing and lifting heavier weights to get stronger

ive put on a stone in weight in 4 months. mostly upper body.

when i started i was the same as you. could hardly do 5 push ups never mind 20 like i do now.
ive nearly doubled the weight of the dumbells i lift while still staying with good form

of all the workouts ive done this is by far the upper body routine i get the best results from

    Thanks all for the advice.

Chrism2007, your situation and routine sounds like it's what I need. Do you do 10 reps in every set?

go for 12 with good form.

if you can do 13 move up weights.

make sure to watch videos of every exercise aswell and do them all properly. form is extremely important

dont neglect the rest of your body either.

step ups, lunges, squats etc... if you dont feel confident with them, get confident. challenge yourself. youll be suprised at what you can do with enough training

    and above all else..enjoy :pac:

Get some chinups, pullups & dips in when you can manage them too, excellent compound exercises for the upper body, but tough starting out, most guys I know can't do any.

be careful with the tricep curls, theyre hard to do unless your double jointed

now if u will look on the website westwoodgym.co.cc under 'training guide' you will find full animated pictures how to train each part of the body. it shows exactly how to use machines and free weights. it's very good.
have a look and let me know what u think.

    Hi Westwoodgtm,

Thanks for the link and thanks for putting that site together if you were involved in it.

The individual muscle/excercise guides look great and will be a helpful reminder. I guess the first thing I need to do is book an appointment with an instructor to design a routine which will a) help me achieve my goal and b) is tailored to my current condition. Once I have an appropriate routine to follow I will certainly use the westwoodgym.co.cc site to brush up on the correct technique for each excercise.

    Regards,

    Fish
