Depends on what you want to do really. No point in just coming up with something that will work if you aren't into it. I'd say the treadmill will get boring fast, if you want aerobic activity maybe one of the classes would stand a better chance of keeping your attention? You should definitely do some kind of resistance training (trying not to show my powerlfting bias now after the feedback thread!) but there's*no point in prescribing a big list of things to do cos you'll be overwhelmed. I'd say to start out with learning to do lunges, probably the best "bang for your buck" exercise for women and what they generally want to achieve. Bum and thighs right?!?

A local lady in her seventies took up running in her 50s and is now on her way to her 100th marathon. Im just mentioning that so youll stop looking at your age as any kind of obstacle. :)

I agree that sticking solely to the treadmill will get soul destroying. In fact any routine gets boring in time. So get your instructor in the gym to give you a routine, and keep getting progress checks from him/her every few weeks. Set yourself a challenge, a distance, or speed you want to reach. Or an event, to keep your interest up.

I cant advise much about what precisely you should do, I just know that keeping your motivation up is key, but weights, squats and lunges as mentioned are what it takes to start looking toned imo.

    weights, weights and more weights.

dont be afraid to use the free weights area

ask for a free weights plan from a trainer at the gym. keep on lifting heavier weights

45 is only a number :D dont think it makes you any different

in fact some of the fittest people in my local gym are over 40
