I want to know if you buy the same car as a mate is it considered wrong?

I am aware that it might get moved from AH, but seeing as most people spend most of their day in AH, i thought it was the best place to get a wider view from the general public

afaik it's customary to dislike mates cars. It's totally taboo to get the same one though.

Most people will probably just think that you and your mate are bumming each other.

If you are not comfortable with that....it is wrong.

    fair enough!

Its just me then! I dont think its wrong. I wouldnt have a problem if a mate had the same car as me! But then again none of my mates have the same car as me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,738 ✭✭✭Naos

    What's the car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

shouldnt matter what car it is

shouldnt matter what car it is

    It matters alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

    why does it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,689 ✭✭✭Vain

    why does it?

If it was a punto or some other non cool car then why would you want to buy it because your mate has it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,375 ✭✭✭kmick

I know the OP and his mate has a mini metro shazam (1983). It is definitely wrong.

OP, Id say it would be worse if you got his missus up the duff

If you're a girl would it be like showing up to a party/wedding/other special occasion in the same dress as a friend?

"Totally Morto" I think is the phrase

It's a 100% certainty that this guy is probably bumming someone. Trust me. It's science.

Its only wrong if you start grooming yourself to look like them

Then talking and acting like them

Then moving in with his/her family while he/she is away and pretending you are the other person.....

    .....you should so do that!

    defo not wrong,

funny you bring it up , me and a few mates were having this same conversation earlier

A car is an expensive purchase and if you really want that type of car your mate has NO exclusive rights over it, in fairness its not an item of clothing or a pair of runners ffs.

Now doing up the car is another issue, it would be a bit sad if you went and bought the same alloys, spoiler, tinted windows, seat covers etc, thatd be just annoying.

Why you think it might be wrong is beyond me...
    Pros:
If anything goes wrong with either car, you can compare and have a heads up on any future probs.
You can both find scrap yards/mechanics etc that suit your car and haggle them down on price (My friend was offered X for this part, I want you to match it)

    Cons:
    er...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,833 ✭✭✭✭Armin_Tamzarian

shouldnt matter what car it is

    I disagree.

If you just had to have a Bugatti Veyron after driving your mate's one then that could be ok.

You and your mate driving matching bright yellow Ford Kas?
    Oh no, no, no...

    er...

There were these two guys that used to go to my old gym.
They both drove matching white Honda Integras.

Now the Honda Integra is a nice car, nothing wrong with it.

But stop for a second and try to imagine how totally gay the two
of them looked pulling up together in their matching white cars,
    parking beside each other, etc.
    It was just so wrong.

Whoever gets the car second is always going to appear like they're some weirdo, who is trying to copycat their mate.
You know, like those girls you see that copy their good looking, popular friend's hairstyles, clothes, etc.

So OP, what type of car is it?

It's very wrong. What happens if you're both out some night and you both get so steaming drunk that you accidenty drive home in each others car?

If it makes you happy OP go for it and ... f*uck your friend :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,433 ✭✭✭kittenkiller

    Definately wrong.
I mean, your friend is bound to find out and when he does, he'll most likely be crushed.
We all know deep down that our cars aren't completely unique and that other people may have had similar ones, but we try not to think about it.
But if a firend has one the same, it's just like rubbing someone's face in it!
    I can't believe you'd do that to a friend.
I can't even believe you can bring yourself to call him a friend!

Remember before you put the deposit down that you can't turn back time and take it back.
The trust between you will be gone forever.....

Sorry I just actually read the first post....
Of course it's ok to have the same car as a friend.

I thought the issue was a serious one with some sort of point!
    My mistake! ;)

I wouldn't get the same car as my friend, why would you want the same car as your friend anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

what if you both liked the same type of car? Just because one friend has one, the other cant get it?

    Doesnt make any sense!

From a practical point of view getting the same car makes sense.

However, alot of people are concerned about the looks of a car when they buy it.
To an extent the car is like a fashion accessorise, it's an image thing.

If you're mate bought a new jacket and you really liked it.
Would you think it would be ok for you to go out and buy the exact same jacket?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,058 ✭✭✭✭Abi

All this gick over a car? The answer is fairly simple. If you like the style of a car, and it is within your means - buy the fucking thing.

    /Thread

Should said friend happen to take issue with it, make a new friend and tell the other to grow the fuck up.

it definatley show's a lack of imagination....

Me not cares about lack of imagination with my Toyota. I love that the thing starts even if there's 10ft of snow on the ground, floods all around and fog. All at the one time. I would gladly make my enemies buy rubbish Fords though.
