DCU Campus Res rant time

Right, I live in Larkfield. I applied for Hampstead next year, I applied about 2 days after the applications opened and about 6 weeks before they closed.

So why the **** am I being told that I didn't get any place on campus next year?!?

Seriously, it's so stupid. Last year they went on first come first served so I just assumed they'd do the same this year....except now they've decided that because of "problems with the website" last year they're doing this totally on random selection.

Also, last year they went by how far the person is travelling from to go to DCU. Being from Waterford, I'd assume I'd be pretty OK too. But now when I asked them about it they said they've gotten rid of that too because "people from Dublin generally don't apply for accommodation".

So now technically someone who applied 5 mins before the closing date and who lives 30 mins from campus probably has a room ahead of me.

I knew Campus Res were generally cnuts anyway, but this is just fúcking headwrecking

It was always random selection for 2nd/3rd/4th years - a couple of years back was first-come first served for first years only, but this is also changed to random selection now

It was first come first served going into 1st year last year. When I asked reception about it they said it was changed because they were having problems with the website.

When did campus offers come out?? Didn't get anything telling me I have or have not been accepted...........

They arrived in most peoples homes today by post.

You got an email if you didn't get it.

Never even knew they were done by post....I assume then that the postal ones aren't just for incoming first years but are for every year?

Oh, I'm going into second year, first years won't know for another while IIRC

yeah I'm goin into third year and I just checked my post there and been offered college park!

The whole random selection system is highly flawed as it means those who really need it might not get it, and instead their places could go to people who just couldn't be bothered to make a simple short commute (say, sub 30 minutes).

It's what kept me out this year and last year, even though I've had two-hour commutes before and now I've moved out of the family home...

Dave03 i am the same as you. I went up to the accomodation office and asked and i had been given hampstead. I reckon the letter didnt come because of the distance to where i live (galway). So assuming thats the case with you too and you havent gotten an email you should be grand

Y'know, there are plenty of other places close to DCU, at similar or cheaper price ranges; Shanowen Square, Shanowen Hall, Gateway, rent a house with a group of people who also didn't get on campus. I don't see what the big deal is tbh.

Preference is given to people applying going into 3rd or final year. It's never been first come first served either for people going into 2nd year or higher too. It was always random selection. You need to get over yourself.

Funny you wouldn't be saying that if you were the one missing out

Anyway, I know there's nothing that can done anymore. Just gonna hope some good comes out of the waiting list.

I missed out last year actually. I didn't bother applying this year because I prefer off campus. I was disappointed last year but not so selfish as to get angry over it like you have on this thread.

You keep telling yourself that ;)

Anyway, does anyone know were applications higher than previous years? I've already heard of a good few people that missed out too. I knew it's generally popular anyway, but I wouldn't have expected it to be this popular.

well remember there's always hope - I might not be taking my offer as I want to stay in shanowen this year coming in. Emailed them last night, if it doesn't look likely I'll be taking campus but I hope not to! =)

I applied less than an hour after the application opened and I didnt get it..I do think Final year students should be given preference but so should students that live at the opposite end of Ireland..It's not really right that 2nd year students who live within commuting distance should be given it....
Not alot I can do now though:(..!!

Does anyone know is Shanowen taking applications now? Or would it be a good idea to start looking for a house now or is it better to leave it till the end of semester when there might be more advertised??

I got an email back from Shanowen Square after applying saying that offers weren't being sent out until June, so I imagine it's still worth applying there. When I rang about three weeks ago I was told I'd be guaranteed a spot if I applied before the end of that week, so I guess it's first come first served.

With campus accomodation demand is always gonna be greater than supply so somebody has to lose out, you can't assume you're gonna get it. That's why I also applied for Shanowen :)

jhn_nln, I live in Galway too and I got a letter telling me I got on-campus accomdation on Thursday.

I dont really see what the big deal is about living on campus is. Its an absolute rip off and its a joke with all the rules and regulations that they have.

Im living in the gateway at the moment and its pretty decent, apartment is pretty big, rent is reasonable, and security isnt too bad, if they want to stop a party just offer them a cup of tea :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

The one and only reason I like living on campus is location. I'm very happy to put up with the shíte security, the shíte rules and the shíte facilities if it means being able to get up 5 mins before a lecture starts or have a 30 second walk to the gym.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭Paddy-Megans-Lo

Location is good but on campus accom has no atmosphere whatsoever, been to the accom in Limerick and in UCd and stuff and much better buzz about the place.
The rules, the ridiculous prices and the power trip that campus res are on is such a turn-off though...

To me, college life is as much about the experience and it's good that at least there IS on campus accom with a huge bunch of dcu students in one place but, in my opinion, the whole set up leaves a lot to be desired.
    I was disappointed this year...

If you're looking for convenience, whats wrong with Shanowen Square/Hall? Most days I roll out of bed about 5 minutes before I need to be in college. There is a decent shop on your doorstep which is open till 11, as opposed to having to walk down to ballymun road if its after 7. There is a laundrette there too, security is a lot more relaxed and dont give a **** if you have a party, no room inspections, comparable sized apartments of a standard about half way between hampstead and college park, etc etc. Lived on campus for 2 years, shanowen for the other 2 and far far prefer shanowen.

    On a slightly different note:

Room inspections 5 weeks ago, this week, and in four weeks time when we leave.

Thats 3 sets of inspections in 10 weeks. The occupancy contract which I have been so often quoted by campus res says room inspections roughly every 6 weeks.

I understand you cant win with them, but this has really pissed me off. Saying that, dont think you can beat it for facilities and location.

Just on Shanowen, is there any difference between halls and square? Which is the better, which is the cheaper etc?

Square is better i'd say. Hall are a bunch of dodgy cvnts at times when it comes to getting deposits back from them. Furnishing wise and layout wise they are almost identical. Im not sure what the price difference is if there is any.

I would reccommend that everyone would steer clear of Gateway. Now that's a rip off!!!! You would actually be better off sleeping rough in the middle of ballymun!!!! shanowen hall and square is by far the best off campus accommodation. all rooms are en suite and there's a good buzz about the place!!! Gateway is infested with mice, it's security is the biggest joke ever, i've had my windows broken and been fined for really stupid things!!!! Livin in college park next year though so delighted with that!!! I've heard it's a snore but i'm actually looking to relax from now on!!!! Don't want to be going to bed sleeping with one eye open and a hurley by side anymore!

500 People on waiting list this year.

Yeah heard that too. 400 out of 900 got places on campus. They also said on average they're expecting 100 places to become available through drop outs etc, but the waiting list is random selection too.

Tbh, I'm coming around to the idea of Shanowen square next year. I've got my application in and from talking to them I should be ok getting a place. It's fairly expensive but it's sounds like the better of the two Shanowen places.

    Anythings better than Larkfield anyway!

I don't understand, are you saying you think they shouldn't check our rooms for damage/cleanliness after we've left before they're rented for the summer?

Or maybe just that they should keep to their own terms&conditions, which they seem fond of relying on when it comes to getting money out of students; "Housekeeping inspections will be carried out approximately every 6 weeks."

Where did you see that there's inspections before our lease finishes?
