Whats the point? If you're on the inside lane it's none of your business what the others do unless it affects your road position

So who here flashes the lights at drivers who overtake them at a considerably higher speed?

My favourite is the lady driving the other way as I overtake. It takes her so long to remember how her car works that I'm safely back on my own side of the road when she starts flashing me!

    nobody overtakes me! :(

I think these ppl that flash are a$$holes! It's not illegal to overtake cars if its safe to do so that is. A lot of times I've passed out cars legally and safely and they leave on their headlights during the night. If ppl pass me out, I just don't care unless they were putting my life in danger by doing so

No I wouldn't flash lights at em, if they cut me off coming back into lane I'd blast the horn at them though!

Its completely retarded to flash at someone who overtakes you safely. WHY???? I have rigged up a row of spots under the towbar at the back of my jeep and I bloody cant wait to use them!

Really? I quite enjoy these peoples appreciation and admiration of my bravery when I overtake at speed! I cant believe nobody has said they do flash yet! I would see it these gestures of repect regularly when I overtake both on N roads and motorways! They are also sometimes marvelled by my acceleration off the lights I get odd appreciative flash there as well too!

Another one I have noticed a few times is when you overtake a car and the car coming towards you flashes as if to say I was too close for you to overtake, despite the fact they were way off and you are comfortably traveling on the correct side of the road when you get flashed. Annoying feckers.

I have been known to flash drivers who are driving too slow in front of me especially if they are sitting in the overtaking lane on a DC or a section of N road with an overtaking lane.

Not only does the person that just passed you, does't give a damn, some people coming from the other direction will think there is a speed trap, accident, etc ahead of them.

As long as the road allows it, go on overtake. As stealthy as possible pls.
It's the crazy, daredevil, risking everyone's life kinda guys that gets my goat, overtaking on corners and such.

I double-flash my lights at cars that are speeding towards me! I get a great kick out of looking in my rear view mirror at their brake lights coming on in anticipation of a speed trap. Childish I know, but works every time!

    That's sad, oh so sad.

Hope somebody does it to you and ignore them and then find there is an actual speed trap ahead.

Hahaha... Brilliant. It's like some one who posted about flashing someone forty miles before a check point, you never know lol.

Noone has flashed me yet, but just last night I passed some one out doing 75ish, when I passed out I proceeded to do 100kms and next thing I see the same car flying past me.

Provided you stick to the 'convention' of one or two quick flashes, they'll understand your intention and thank you for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,180 ✭✭✭Mena

My favourite one was last weekend. Passed an opel of some sort on a DC. I flew past the guy, but then I was only doing 80kph, the speed limit. He must have been doing no more than 30kph. He flashed me about 50 times and was still flashing as I rounded the corner a ways on... :D

I came close to doing this so many times on country roads, but didn't.
I believe there are only a few instances when you should flash your lights and I stick by them.

    1) When you pass an accident/speedtrap/loose animal and warn approaching drivers on the other side of the road.
    2) When an oncoming car is driving erratically towards me.

    There, that's it. Period.

I feel sorry for those people that feel the need to flash anyone doing a normal speed. I find they're the type of people that bolt on things to their cars (if you want to make it go faster, why put more weight on it? Spoilers are only effective at over the legal speed limit ffs) and have weeeery small penii. :P

And before the go-faster-stripe brigade go off on one, I am a petrolhead, I know how to take apart an engine and put it back together (as long as it's an alfa), do my own services, follow all forms of motor racing and yet still think putting a huge load of crap on a car points you out as someone that knows absolutely nothing about cars and would much prefer to have followed a life in hairdressing.

On a motorway when someone's speeding "really" fast towards me coming from behind I *indicate, just to keep them on their toes, usually they speed up even faster, trying to prevent me from moving into the driving lane. That way they get to drive even faster and I get to use my indicator.

*This story may not be true.

Of course I don't!! I'd rather they overtook me at a safe speed than barely crawled past, as is quite often the case.

That sounds completely illegal, you say you have a row of headlights facing rearwards?

If its completely retarded to flash someone that overtakes you? where is the sense in blinding someone behind you, regardless of what they have done, its not only retarded but dangerous WHY????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 brajan

I flash for lorry or arctic drivers to give them sign to back on his lane (just one time).

Its normall in Germany if u driving on fast lane thats drivers beehind you flashing. Fast lane is just for overtaking not for driving

Not headlights, spots. And its actually not illegal. Its no more dangerous than someone approaching the car behind me flashing their lights. Its to demonstrate just how annoying and dangerous it is to get flashed for no reason. If it makes even one person cop-on, then it could save lives

There's no reason to flash someone overtaking you. How else are they going to overtake you? Should they slowly crawl up the opposite side of the road or get around you slow drivers as fast as possible. Are you one of those annoying drivers that drive at 80 in 100km roads? If so its you people that are the cause of accidents.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 747 ✭✭✭WillieCocker

    No.
    What's flashing going to do?

I think some people think it might frighten the speeder into thinking they are Gardai.:pac:

i normally wouldnt care if someone was overtaking me providing its safe,

but yesterday i was driving back to cork and i noticed a peugeot tailgating an avensis behind me i could what he was doing was stupid,he overtook the avensis and then tried to bully his way past me by driving about 2 feet (no joke) from my bumper while i was doing 60 mph, eventually he got past me i didnt flash him just beeped! and started tailgating the car in front we went through durrow where calmed down a bit he even let a car turn in front of him!!

back outside the town he overtook on white hatching beside a sign saying "no overtaking for 250m" then overtook another car forcing a jeep to drive in the hard shoulder to avoid a head on!

just before cullahill a garda van passd me,i came to the top of the hill going into the village and there he was driving like a nun out the other side he spotted the gards in time:mad: i didnt see him again,so if anyone spots this idiot report him,its a navy english reg 407,

    sorry bout the rant

I agree with you. I wouldn't flash at anyone travelling at anything near normal speeds. I save my special trick for boy racers who tear through my locality at high speed. Some of them posting here find that pathetic - and that makes me particularly happy!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,770 ✭✭✭smokingman

    Hi Smokingman,
    I agree with you.

My apologies for the misunderstanding, wasn't getting at you at all.
The speeders flashing other normal peeps were my target there alright.

Flashing is a sign of retardedness. Plain and simple.

If you dont like some one overtaking you, stay at home or get the bus. Some people really have a pain in their hole to be the righteous types!

Well, that explains his driving then. Probably no points for him even if he was caught.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

You are either unbelievably stupid or unbelievably ignorant.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but anyone who overtakes me is driving at a comparatively higher speed). Otherwise they're just trundling alongside me, or slightly behind.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,530 ✭✭✭TheInquisitor

Flashing people for no reason? That seems to be exactly what your doing! Are you actually that naive to believe someone won't overtake you in the future because you flash them? On a normal 2.5 hour journey i would overtake 5 cars before i make it to the motorway, if anything just to keep myself awake. Following the same car on a journey is incredibly dangerous as you get bored and sleepy. Overtaking safety now and then keeps me alert and awake...

EVERYONE OVERTAKE (and if you see some idjit flashing spots at you from behind brake suddenly, that'll show "me right one" and all those other stupid drivers out there)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Tragedy

Had a white van man who was doing 80 on the N7 flash me for 30seconds after I overtook him perfectly legally. He then sped up to 100km/h and kept close to me for the next 45mins. A little creepy actually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,402 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Usually the only time I'm being overtaken is when I'm in a van with my company logo emblazoned on the side in huge letters; and its the only one of the model we have left so I daren't do anything in case there's a complaint put in :D
