That would make sense. However they’ve already started to cover the surface in order to complete the embankment. I would have thought that this could cause huge drainage issues.

Traffic from N25 east seemed to have been very good this morning? People understanding the junction better?

Don,t forget all the schools/colleges are closed, so there is a lot of routine traffic off the road until later into August/September!

This has definitely helped the flow of traffic during busy times of the day!

I was thinking the same as jonnreeks. There's probably a lot of people on holiday too. I don't think we're see a true traffic volume at the moment.

To be fair lads, the schools and colleges were closed last week too. If there is a noticeable improvement this week that’s not it.

Presumably people getting used to the new layout over time will help massively too.

Agreed, having used this junction twice a day for the last 15 years can confirm that traffic levels at this time of the year are minimal.

For west bound traffic on the N25 there are a number of lanes still closed, e.g. the left hand lane from Little Island to the tunnel slip, and more closed lanes on the slip itself. I think once they are opened and speed limit from before little island is removed then even at peak times there should be a big reduction in queue length.

Same could be said on South Ring northbound towards the tunnel. As someone pointed that out last week; the speed limit reduction around the Mahon slip is having a major impact still at peak times. Once that is removed there should be positive results.

This is what I’m getting at. We’re seeing a dramatic improvement week in week leading me to believe that last weeks performance was just teething pains.

I’m confident that the scheme will greatly benefit traffic southbound through the Tunnel, both morning and evening.

Following the free-flow last week and the continued tailbacks on the Mahon side every evening (bear in mind we are in a quiet month),I’m less confident that things will improve much northbound. I hope I’m wrong.

Drove through it for the first time this weekend, so nice to just keep going and not worry about traffic lights :)

Will definitely speed up when people get used to the layout and things progress towards completion, as I said previously, it still resembles a building site with cones and signage everywhere, you would be on the lookout or lane changes / people who don't know where they're going etc. It's not conducive to free flowing traffic just yet.

But isn't that why they punctured lots of big holes in the old surface first?

I just don’t see how those holes could be sufficient. They could have had the whole surface ripped up in the time spent punching those holes.

Yes, this is exactly my opinion also.

And furthermore something you didn't mention is what will be the impact on traffic rat-running through Glanmire/Upper Glanmire? We won't know for a few months, but I believe that something additional needs to be done in terms of M8 traffic management towards the North of the city.

Obviously long-term that's an N40 North "ring road" but that will be at least decades away. I'm not suggesting for a second that there's an easy solution, I'm just saying that there's a problem.

Just a question in relation to your image.

I can only see up to the rear of the van on the left, I cannot see the shed or yellow JCB.

are you viewing this in a different way or is this image taken from elsewhere. I get the same image on Chrome on mobile or desktop when on https://www.dunkettletraffic.ie/live/?id=20

When the image opens first it’s much larger. If you open the url on a phone the image is still but you get a much wider field of vision.

I actually have a trick to get the wide angle still in my computer.

On my tablet chrome browser, I can right click on the live image and ‘open image in new tab’. That shows you the wider view as a single picture.

This is the url for the larger view.

Looks like the concrete central reservation at the end of the M8 is being moved to the east so that M8 south will only be 1 lane wide when finished.

Assume the additional space on the northbound carriageway will be used to improve merging from N25 west and N8 east. Understand that in particular, the N8 - M8 merge will be lengthened.

One last thing. I wish the N8 from Dunkettle to the City centre be redesignated as N25. It would be far more sensible than N8.

That or detrunk from Dunkettle onwards.

That N8 to M8 merge does need considerable improvement, it's fairly poor as is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,645 ✭✭✭hans aus dtschl

I agree with you but suspect that detrunk won't happen. There's N roads right through the heart of the city centre.

Perhaps it's possible they're doing this to protect the "national" justification for a North Ring Road for instance, I'm not sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 734 ✭✭✭DylanQuestion

I get the N27 and N20 going right into the city centre, but is there a need for the N22 not stopping at Victoria Cross and the N8 stopping at Silversprings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,645 ✭✭✭hans aus dtschl

One justification that comes to mind (which might well be incorrect) is that TII/NTA are responsible for all national routings and the N8, N27, N20, N22 must all have a logical connection somewhere. If they don't feel there's another more appropriate route for traffic to get from one side of the city to the other, they're designating an "N" road to a city centre street to show what their recommendation is for the route.

Looks like work is progressing on the Tunnel to M8 north movement. Suspect this will be ready to open in next few months.

I presume we're all on the newsletter but the latest one says they're on-track for February 2024 as the official opening date.

Isn't the N28 to M40E a pretty tight turn and the limit there is 50? In fact, you pass the 100km/h sign 20 or 30 yards before the end of the bend....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,399 ✭✭✭chooseusername

The 100km/hr sign is on the slip road as you join the N40. You would have to have the same limit as the road you're joining.

That turn is actually 70 mtr radius, the N8 to N40W is only 50mtr radius

I think when the speed van is gone drivers will drive at whatever speed they find comfortable when negotiating the rurn.

For example, a clapped out 18 year old yoke wirh five on board would present a completely different experience than a 5 year old MB or BMW with the driver only on board
