"TCD" Boards Commons

I'd be interested in organising a boards commons. There's a couple of people on here I'd love to pick a bone with.

Thursdays are usually the best for food and there's a good chance steak would be served (yummy). Any takers?

    I'd be up for it.

Though I can't imagine you have any bones to pick with me.

I've never been to Commons. Always felt it was something I missed out on while I was an undergrad. Chances are I'll be busy, tho.

Would go to this out of amusement ;)

How do you book commons when you're not a scholar? Do you need a valid student card or will an old one as a graduate suffice?

This actually sounds like a nice alternative to a beers.

A good question, the Catering Dept website is no help if you're not a Fellow or Scholar.

Is any one here a fellow or scholar?

Everyone is thinking it, so I'll say it. Is this not a bit pretentious? Commons is, I thought, intended to be a recognition of academic achievement, hence it being restricted usually to scholars, and sometimes to course classes. As opposed to a celebration of hackery. Why not just all go to the dining hall and eat together as TCD boards people? Why is the Special Table so important?

Because it's something different. Something you can't do anywhere else. You should really avail of the full quirkiness of Trinity while you can. You have the whole of the rest of your life to gorge with the masses.

What are you on about? Commons was never meant to be "a recognition of academic acheivement", it was just the evening meal for the whole College (remember that College was relatively small - a couple of thousand students - until recent decades). It used to be that Commons was included in the accomodation fees for those with rooms on campus.

It's a college tradition, not at all restricted to scholars/fellows, and worth a visit at least once in your at the college. Unfortunately they've upped the price of recent, which makes it a little less accessible to your average student.

To purchase a ticket these days you need to go in the back entrance of the buttery (as in outside by the tennis courts near the service entrance), go to the top floor and buzz the door. The person at reception will sell you your ticket. Don't believe you need a student card or anything. You can purchase your ticket anytime before 3pm the day you want to go.

I'd very much be up for this. A very nice alternative to beers.

And sure we can always go for beers afterwards anyway.

I'm to old for midweek beers

Thursday is not midweek. Wednesday is.

But out of interest, commons runs at 7 on fridays too, doesn't it?

Unless its changed since last year, which I doubt, then its 6.15pm every day (with the occasional exception). Friday commons is always fish though, and generally not great.

It was 7 pm last night for some reason. Should be 615 next Thursday.

You can get tickets from the catering office at the back of the Dining Hall (turn right at the cold meats counter, go through the door beside the entrance to the East Dining Hall, up a flight of stairs, hit the buzzer and say you want to go to Commons).

    Right,

    So far we have:

    Cantab.
    Ronny Mitchell
    Pet
    kearnsr
    Tricity Bendix
    ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI
    ApeXaviour
    Jonathan (maybe)

I was on to the catering office. They have a new recessionary rate of €18.50 (down from the extortionate €23.72).

I'll bring name-badges for everyone (user-names of course). Should it be masquerade too?

We'll meet on the steps at 6, just inside the door on the left-hand side as you walk in. Should be good banter.

As far as I know, it'll be in the main dining hall and not the East dining hall.

Seems to be a lot of people bailing. Any suggestion of alternative dates?

Is it only Thursday that commoners like me can go?

Cantab, this is your brainchild. Alternate date? Or are you happy to leave it at thursday?

If we're choosing an alternate date... How's monday for everyone?
Tricity, when can you go? Pet? Zwei? Ronny? Kearnsr?

Defo cant do any mondays. A bit more flexiable the rest of the week

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭Cantab.

There's a high probability the food on Monday will be crap. The best day for food in my experience is Thursday. There could be fish on Friday and that's often dodgy. Last Thursday there was roast beef and 2 Thursdays before there was steak!

Could whoever has notified their intention to attend please confirm. If we can't get a quorum of at least 5, we'll have to postpone the masquerade commons to next week (Thursday).

While I never explicitly said I'd be there, I'm on the fence. I can be there to make up numbers, but I'd much prefer to go when there is a bigger gang going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,297 ✭✭✭Ron DMC

For me wednesdays are out. I can do some thursdays, but only if I know a week ahead or so.
Monday, tuesday and friday are all good. Unless the friday is sunny in which case I'm more likely to be in the pav.

I'm only free Fridays, but even then it'd be unlikely that I'd dedicate my one free night to this.
