I'm pretty sure Ryanair charge thin people as well

Ryanair have turned their entire advertising campaign into coming up with ridiculous charges that they will probably never actually bring in.

Will they let midgets on half price then?

Apparently they save 10,000Euro a year by not carrying ice on their planes due to the extra weight.

Imagine how much they could save if they didnt have a bunch of fatties weighing down the plane? add to that all the extra food they have to carry onboard to feed the fatties.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,972 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

It did always annoy me that me at less than 10 stone was restricted to whatever the limit for luggage is (lets say 15stone) and would only add a max 25 stone weight to the plane while the 20 stone guy sitting beside me would be adding 35 stone weight. Meanwhile id be charged an extra 10 or 20 euro for each extra stone of weight i had in my bag.

However i really think it is totally impractical to charge fatter people more and could result in some horendous PR

It's the public who are voting for it so don't blame/congratulate Ryanair. Prefer the toilet paper idea myself.

Anyway many airlines already charge overweight/oversized people the cost of two seats etc, as legitimately enough, they sometimes take up two seats, basically the same idea.

Would they have weighing scales at check in though

no I don't normally hang out in the fitness corner, I found it through a google search, trying to find out where to vote on the ryanair site, has anyone got a link?
I'm a skinny bloke, only 8 stone, I do get annoyed at being charged €15* per kilo for my bag's being overweight and often look at other people on the plane and think that my total weight (myself + my baggage) should be taken into account.

*I get annoyed at the extra baggage charge, but I accept it because I have been told my allowances, but just have not packed properly.

Imagine how much they could save by throwing Michael O'Leary out of one of their planes somewhere over the Irish Sea. Feeding his ego is the biggest cost to that airline.

There is a vote on Ryanair's website, funnily enough there is no option to vote for no charge. Disgrace of an airline

The competition has been up on Ryanair's site for weeks now.

I don't see the problem. An obese person would have to fill up their car more often on a long journey, whats the difference?

Its true that its all part of an advertising campaign, however its not that crazy an idea, I for one would be surprised or dissappointed if they brought it in, me coming in at under 60kgs
In the US, I think its Jetblue, charge two seats for persons over a certain size, i.e. those who would be spilling over onto another seat. So could happen.

You have to feel sorry for the overweight. Imagine the amount they've already spent during their lifetime on swiss rolls and mega meanies and now this. My heart really does go out to the fat bastards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,824 ✭✭✭ShooterSF

My tactic to avoid paying extra is to wear as many layers as possible on to the plane. I agree it's annoying seeing tubby get the same luggage allowance especially if you get stuck sitting beside it as it's flab rolls over into your seat.

The only announced the result of the vote today. From website:
Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today (22 Apr) announced that it will now consider how to charge a ‘fat tax’ after more than 30,000 passengers voted in favour of charging excess weight fees for very large passengers in an online vote over the past two weeks.

Over 100,000 passengers voted, via www.ryanair.com, to decide which cost reduction idea should win a €1,000 cash prize. Ryanair confirmed the final poll results as follows:

    1. 29% - Excess fees for very overweight passengers,
    2. 25% - €1 for toilet paper – with O’Leary’s face on it,
    3. 24% - €3 to smoke in a converted toilet cubicle,
    4. 14% - Annual subscription to access Ryanair.com,
    5. 8% - €2 “corkage” fee for passengers who bring their own food onboard.

Ryanair will now consider how to implement such a charge and asked passengers to vote, via www.ryanair.com, on which format the charge should take:

    1. Charge per kg over 130kg/20 stone (male) and 100kg/15 stone (female);
    2. Charge per inch for every waist inch over 45 inch (male) and 40 inch (female);
    3. Charge for every point in excess of 40 points on the Body Mass Index (+30 points is obese);
    4. Charge for a second seat if passengers’ waist touches both armrests simultaneously.VOTE HERE!

      Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said:

“Over 100,000 passengers logged on to ryanair.com to take part in our competition and almost one in three (over 30,000)think that very large passengers should be asked to pay a fat tax.

“With passengers voting overwhelmingly for a ‘fat tax’ we are now asking them to suggest which format the charge should take. The above four points seem to us to be the simplest, fairest and administratively easiest to apply. In all cases we’ve limits at very high levels so that a ‘fat tax’ will only apply to those really large passengers who invade’ the space of the passengers sitting beside them.

“These charges, if introduced might also act as an incentive to some of our very large passengers to lose a little weight and hopefully feel a little lighter and healthier.

“The revenues from any such fat tax will be used to lower the airfares for all Ryanair passengers yet further. Passengers can vote for their preference on www.ryanair.com until Monday 27th April”.

It actually sounds like a joke  How humiliating that will be for people. They'll lose out on custom from overweight customers plus their families who'll be travelling with them!

As long as Ryanair are miiiiiiles cheaper than their competitors, I and millions more will continue using them regularly.

Of course that's the case for a lot of people, but I'm talking about from the overweight people who'll have to go through the humility of being weighed at the front of the check-out queue :D I'd say a lot of them would rather pay more to fly with someone else than to go through that!

I would love to see Ryanair bring this in.

For the simple reason that I would love their passengers to boycott them, for them to lose tons of profits, hopefully go bankrupt and finally, to see the look on Michael O'Leary's face. That would be brilliant!!

I've heard that Southwest do it... and Michael O Leary has pretty much entirely modeled Ryanair on Southwest's business plan, so it's surprising that they haven't done it themselves yet.

They've said they've seriously considered all 5 proposals, and rightly so. Why pass up an opportunity to make money? And I think they'll escape a lot of political problems if they do bring in the extra charge for fat people, simply by saying it wasn't their idea, it was their customers' idea. I think they should charge everyone based on their weight. This would stop only fat people being weighed and being charged more and being humiliated. If everyone got weighed, and they advertised their fares like "€1 per stone" then I think that'd work. The light people will pay less than they do now, the fat people will pay more than they do now.

And Michael O'Leary said he'd happily sell toilet paper for €1 a go with his face on it if he thought it'd make them money

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,220 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

    I don't see a huge problem with it ;)

It doesn't charge over weight people, which would be the majority of our country, it charges obese people, there is a differance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,390 ✭✭✭Captain-America

I'm not seeing a problem with this. People who are well on their way to disabling themselves need a bit of a wake up call, this may be it. They should triple the price of Airplane food for the obese, and not allow any food in their luggage. And no life jackets.

And change the name of Ryanair to Weight Watchers.

Exactly and leave more seats available to sell to more profitable skinny people.

Feck all people would actually boycott them, simple as, most people just are not that fat. It would be a small number of Large people who boycott.

In the US it's long been an airline policy to require "people of size" to buy two seats, simply because they take up two seats.

They can't charge by weight if a person will fit in a single seat. EU wotsits'

    Politically incorrect. Height challenged people:D.

In any case, if the test is to be as stated, that the person's waist touches both armrests, then the only ones who will escape the charge will be two year old children, and which point Ryanair will reduce the seat width to six inches.

I thought there were a few airlines with these plans. Personally I think they are right.
I was on a flight back from the US and I saw this huge woman in her 20's coming down the plane and was praying she wasn't going to sit beside. She then went to get in a two seater. I thought it was just for her and then her mother of similar size comes along and tries to sit beside her!
The air hostess had to come over after a few attempts as it was obvious they couldn't fit together. She then directs the woman to sit beside me. She sat down and I couldn't access the control to the TV in the arm rest as he rolls of fat cover them. She actually said to me they make the seats too small but I guess she had to say something as it was obviously humiliating.

For anyone that was ever at Shea stadium in NY, the NY Mets home ground you will know that the seats there are pretty tight, anyways it is due to be demolished anyway.

I was there in 2005 and our tickets were next to some humongous whale and his rolls of fat took up almost my seat too. I tried bribing the ten year old in our party of three to sit there but no joy. I had to endure it for like 30 minutes until we foolishly realised the stadium was half empty and we moved to some better seat with a good view and no fat people. We were then accosted by the stewards and I just said "bhuil cad gum dullamok mached a holla" and he didn't bother then thinking I did not speak english, my two New Yorker friends could not stop laughing at it.

Ryanair to charge pregnant women 50% levy!

Well if they did that they'd have to charge men more all the time as pregnant women gain an average of 22ilbs during pregnancy and men on average weigh more than that over women as they tend to be taller and broader. And pregnant women rarely fly in later pregnancy anyway, especially in the last month when they will be heaviest.
