I'm currently doin a sports coaching course and was looking to work in a gym when I'm finished and was wondering if anyone knows what sort of salary you'd have and also if anyones worked in a gym abroad and could tell me what the average salary anywhere else is would be appreciated as I'm really considering heading off. Thanks for listening and will appreciate all feedback.

Minimum wage , although some go to about 10 ph and some gyms give a bonus for every class you teach . (ps not sure if a coaching course would qualify you to work in a gym did you cover gym based exercise prescription ??)

i've worked in the leisure sector in Ire and on cruise ships for 10 + years. Starting salary for a basic gym instructor job is about 10 per hour. Most gym instructors will have opportunities to go into sales, management or PT to earn a lot more once they have experience.
Cruise ships give ok money but you dont have any living expenses so it works out to be a great salary.

I worked with Steiner transocean who have the contracts to run spa's / gyms aboard most of the liners. not sure what is is now, but it was 8 mths for your first one and 6 mths for each contract after first one. You also ave to do some training in london for anything from one day to 3 months. (this depends on your sex (cabin sharing arrangements) experience and how many are in front of you. you literally get told today that you are flying to Miami etc. tomorrow so you stay in London till you get the shout.

No money when you're in training! They give you accomodation with breakfast and dinner but you need to have enough to survive for a few weeks surrounded by mostly female beauticians, hair dressers and PT's. The social life is fairly hectic during training and, as everyone knows they will be heading off soon, all bets are off...
