Ivy on a house - good or bad?

    Folks

Finding it very difficult to get info on the pro's & cons of cladding one or more of the walls of the house in ivy.
Some swear against it, others say there's nothing to worry about but that once it's there, its there to stay.:o

The way I see it, if -
    • the house is new,
    • the render is in good shape
    • you are prepared to get on a ladder & trim it 1 foot from the eaves as needed
    • you don't mind hosting a few birds and
    • you're in it for the long haul!
    then there's no problem.

    What am I overlooking?

    ... the most damaging aspect...

ivy roots are strong enough to break into mortar joints. This allows access into joints by moisture, which at times of cold weather, can allow freeze- thaw damage action....

ivy damages, its whether you are willing to live with it that matters....

    Appreciate the reply, Syd.

Like outkast, I'd be interested to know if there's other climbers that are less pernicious - would be grateful for anyone's suggestions. Mind you, I doubt trellising would work over the entire face of the house...

(heading into the gardening forum now for a peek),

    Cheers
